The Jewish National Fund (JNF) wasfounded in 1901 at the fifth ZionistCongress in Basel, Switzerland, with

Theodore Herzl as one of its keyfounding members. Since then, ourpurpose has always been to help builda Jewish state in the land of Israel.

In our early years we bought land, planted trees, drained swamps,

and built the infrastructure for afunctioning state.

Today JNF has adapted its missionto meet the challenges facing theState of Israel in the 21st Century. We aim to regenerate rocket-strickencommunities and towns in the Negev, tackle unemployment, and helpunderprivileged youth.

    Israels first Prime Minister, David

    Ben-Gurion, famously declared that it

is in the Negev that the creativity and

pioneer vigour of Israel shall be tested.

Today, after 65 years of progress, growth

and regeneration, Israel has turned itsattention towards the Negev.

Following decades of neglect, the Negevs

potential as a viable and sustainable

solution to the State of Israels

    increasingly overcrowded central region, is

slowly but surely being realised. With the

help of our generous supporters, JNF UK

is playing an increasingly important role in

building Israels future in the Negev sands.

Since I joined JNF UK in 2008, I have

been inspired to see how the Negev has

    invigorated the Jewish pioneering spirit

that Ben Gurion so admired. On the

ground in Israel, JNF UK is working closely

    with motivated, grassroots organisations

such as the Ayalim Association, which is

    breathing life into neglected communities;

    and HaShomer HaChadash, which is

    protecting isolated communities under

attack by armed gangs. We also workwith local government agencies as they

    tackle poverty and unemployment, and

embark on some of the most ambitious

    urban-regeneration projects the country

    has ever seen.

    However, perhaps more than anything

else, our successes in 2012 reflect the

    unwavering commitment of British Jewry

to the welfare and success of the State

    of Israel.

Thanks to our generous donors and

dedicated team of staff and volunteers,JNF UK is experiencing a period of

    comprehensive growth that defies the

    current economic climate from our

direct fundraising efforts to the work of

our subsidiaries KKL Charity Accounts and

KKL Executor and Trustee Company (Wills

    and Estates).

Our income overall has grown by an

impressive 76%, which has translated into

an increase of 96% in our commitmentsto projects in Israel a testament to the

    range of improvements and safeguards

    which have been implemented during

the last four years to ensure maximum

    transparency and efficiency.

I would like to end with an invitation to

all those interested in the work of JNF UK

to come and see for yourself how your

support could change countless lives and

secure a safe and prosperous future forthe people and State of Israel.

    Sincerely,

    Samuel Hayek

    Chairman, JNF UK

Chairmans Review2012 was a busy and successfulyear at JNF UK. We madeenormous strides in our missionto build, develop and protect Israelicommunities in the Negev, througha vibrant array of programmes,

including partnerships withsome of Israels most dynamicorganisations.

This year we are proud to report record

results and, thanks to your support, our

income grew by 76% and accordingly we

    have increased our project commitments

in Israel to 4.5 million. We continue to

work tirelessly to support the people of

Israel in every way we can.

Israel is prospering, some say our job is done

and Israel no longer needs our support.

However, you only need to drive one hour

south of Tel Aviv to see how far from the

truth this really is. As you cross the unseen

border to the Negev you find a completely

different reality. This rough terrain covers

over 60% of the land of Israel, remains largely

unsettled and even today you have to be a

real pioneer to build your life there.

JNF UK is there as families begin new

lives in the desert sands. We help them

build their homes and strengthen the

communities they live in. We support

    employment, youth and education; we

assist in providing healthcare and promote

    arts and culture. Without JNF UK, living inthe Negev would be an impossible dream;

with your support we can make this vision

    come true!

    Matan Toledano

    Chief Executive Officer, JNF UK

Our Mission is to continue to build

the State of Israel, to populate the

Negev, and to ensure that every

man, woman and child can live insafety and security, with access to

    quality healthcare, education and

    employment.

Chief ExecutiveOfficers ReviewJNF UK today is a dynamic and vibrant

    organisation offering a unique range

of services to the Jewish community.

This years results reflect how our vital

work in the UK is translated into animpressive portfolio of projects in Israel.

Our Strategy Project NegevHow we are regenerating communities, improving thelives of the people living there and attracting families whoare choosing to build their future in the Negev:

    Education/Training

Every child deserves a chance to realise

    their academic potential. Providing the

    highest quality education and childcare

facilities in the Negev is vital for future

    growth and to encouraging students

and families to move into the area.

We are building and supporting schools,

    childcare facilities and special education

centres for children of all backgrounds

    throughout the Negev.

    Youth

    Thousands of children in communities

across the Negev have suffered the

    emotional and psychological upset

from rocket fire for more than a decade.

There is also limited provision for

youth outside of school hours leaving

countless young people on the streets.

We tackle youth crime in the region by

creating a safe, friendly and healthyenvironment for children and teenagers,

    through providing extra-curricular

    activities, such as homework support

    and counselling.

    Economic/Community/Development/

    Employment

    Unemployment in the Negev is

    considerably higher than the national

average and it is critical to support

employment in order to help combat

    poverty.

    We are supporting programmes that

encourage businesses to move to the

    Negev and are assisting vocational

activities, helping to create a sustainable

    future for the region.

    Advancing of Health/Saving of Lives

We are committed to ensuring that

every man, woman and child has access

    to quality healthcare.

    We are funding programmes which

    provide state-of-the-art healthcare

facilities across the Negev. We focus

    on supporting the most vulnerable

members of society, including the elderly

and disabled, for whom such facilities

can be a matter of life and death.

    Accommodation/Housing

    Relieving Israels overcrowded central

    region by providing affordable housing

in the Negev for young families is a

    major priority for Israels government.

We are leading the way by supporting

    urban-development projects in

    neglected neighbourhoods, building

    student villages, and encouraging

businesses and employers to invest inthe Negev, generating greater demand

    and growth.

    Arts/Culture/Recreation

As part of our commitment to urban

    regeneration, we are building theatres,

sports clubs and other facilities in

towns and cities throughout the Negev.

We are also investing in the future by

    building music schools and providing

    opportunities for local communities to

develop and nurture their own home-

    grown artistic talent.

    Additionally we provide leisure facilities

for residents of all ages and backgrounds

    as well as parks, playgrounds,

    community/youth and sport centres.

    Peoples Stories

    Holocaust Survivors Club

84 year old Eva lives alone on Kibbutz

Magen in Israels Eshkol region, on

the border with the Gaza Strip. She

    is a Hungarian Holocaust survivor,

whose entire family perished in the

camps. Eva never had children and,

after losing her husband 10 years ago,

depends heavily on her friends and

    neighbours for companionship and

    support.

One of the highlights of Evas week

is her visit to the JNF sponsored

    Holocaust Victims Social Club

provided by the Foundation for the

Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel.

There she enjoys a wide range of social

activities with the 70 other members

    who attend.

The club in Magen provides participantswho suffer extreme loneliness, financial

hardship and the insecurity of unstable

health, the means of finding friendship

and support at a difficult time in their lives.

    Eva appreciates and values the

    opportunity to share her life

experiences with others who may have

    endured similar challenges. Without

it she would be alone and at risk of

    greater isolation.

    Shuva Park Playground

Maya is 8 years old and lives in Shuva,

a community bordering the Gaza Strip

in southern Israel. Life can be hard: she

lives under near constant threat of rocketattacks from terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Her school friends are spread across the

sparsely populated Eshkol region and she

has to travel some distance to play with

    them and cannot travel alone.

JNF helps children like Maya achieve a

semblance of a normal life by building

    playgrounds in remote communities.

We ensure that Maya and her friends

can play securely on the swings, slides

and other playground apparatus that we

provide. We attract families to the area

and can provide them with affordable

housing and safe facilities where their

    children can just be children.

Maya and her family are pioneers,

having settled in a remote area of

    southern Israel. They demonstrate

that everyday living is possible in a

community like Shuva, and are showing

the way for other families to make their

lives in the Negev. JNF supports these

families by ensuring that they have the

    infrastructure to achieve the highest

    quality of life.

    Ayalim Student Village

Ron is 25 years old and from Raanana.

He is currently in his second year

    studying Geography at Ben Gurion

University. During the first year of hisstudies Ron lived in Beersheva, just a

5 minute walk from campus. Although

he was enjoying his studies immensely

he couldnt seem to shake the feeling

that something was missing. He had

a full social life, but his daily schedule

was busy with activities focused solely

    around his own academic advancement

and he felt he lacked a purpose. He

walked around with the sense of being

merely a tourist in a resort, living inclose proximity to his university, but

having no real contact with the local

community. So after the first year,

he decided to do something more

    meaningful.

Ron and two friends decided that they

would move to a newly established

student village in the struggling city

of Arad. The village was founded by

Ayalim in order to face the challenge

    of populating and developing isolated

towns and cities on Israels periphery.

Thanks to JNFs support for Ayalim, Ron

and his friends were able to receive

a full scholarship, in exchange forinvesting eight hours a week of their

time into giving back to the community.

They will also help out at the soon to be

    refurbished Ayalim Community Centre.

The Centre offers academic, cultural and

    social enrichment and support activities

for all ages. Ron spends time helping

children from the local primary school

with their homework and visits the

    elderly.

Ron is grateful to Ayalim and the JNF

for giving him the opportunity to fulfil

a Zionist dream of helping to build a

prosperous town in Southern Israel. His

life has found a purpose in giving back

to a developing community. After his

graduation Ron hopes to settle in Arad

and continue to build his life there as a

result of the relationships he is making

    through his community work.

Ron is grateful to Ayalim and the

JNF for giving him the opportunityto fulfil a Zionist dream
