We are watching developments closely through the Association of Colleges (AoC) and UKCISA. Through these bodies we have been able to respond directly to the proposals, many of which we welcome as positive changes. At the end of the 8 week consultation period (around the end of January), we will hear the final proposals. The UK government intends to prevent abuse of the visa system by bogus institutions and applicants, but it is their stated aim to still encourage ‘the brightest and the best’. Included in the proposals is a clear statement that Highly Trusted Sponsors, such as John Leggott College, will still be able to offer A level courses to good students. It is certain that there will be some changes but, as a Highly Trusted Sponsor, we feel optimistic and confident of being able to continue to offer our courses to students from overseas. If you wish to read the full text of the proposals, please follow this link: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/ documents/policyandlaw/consultations/students/student- consultation.pdf?view=Binary UK UNIVERSITY TUITION FEES “We want to welcome international students to Britain", said UK Prime Minister David Cameron during a speech at Peking University, China (BBC, November 2010). Increasing tuition fees [for UK students] should mean future rises in foreign students' charges can be kept lower, Mr Cameron added. SUCCESS FOR CLASS OF 2010 Well done to our fabulous international students for achieving a 99.1% pass rate at A Level with 83.3% A*-B grades and 91 A*s out of a total 216 exam entries. SCIENCE SUCCESS SONG Yuqi (from Guangzhou, China) was one of the highest scoring students in the country for both the A-level physics and A- level chemistry exams (scoring 598/600 in both) and has been awarded the Salters prize for physics. EXCELLENT PROGRESSION Once again our international students have progressed to top universities in the UK and overseas. * HAO Siyi (from Shenzhen, China) and ZHANG Qihao (from Shanghai, China) have progressed to Oxford University * SHENG Jingyuan (from Ningbo, China) has been accepted by Stanford, USA and SONG Yuqi (from Guangzhou, China) has been accepted by M.I.T., USA * Other students are now at Imperial, LSE, Durham, Warwick and UCL to name just a few. UK UNIVERSITY TUITION FEES “We want to welcome international students to Britain", said UK Prime Minister David Cameron during a speech at Peking University, China (BBC, November 2010). Increasing tuition fees [for UK students] should mean future rises in foreign students' charges can be kept lower, Mr Cameron added.

CHRISTMAS 2010

UPDATE FOR PARTNERS CHARITABLE STUDENTS International students braved the weather and walked the Humber Bridge to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Between them they raised a fantastic £865. A special well done to Alisa Strokova, from Latvia, who was the top fundraiser.

TARGET TWO POINT ZERO Four of the best economics students in the college were selected for the Bank of England and The Times Interest Rate Challenge 2010. The JLC team included TANG Siyuan (from Chengdu, China), Ivan Sychev (from Pyatigorsk, Russia) and Wang Xiang (from Guangzhou, China) . Once again the team excelled and reached the regional finals.

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES College celebrated European Day of Languages at the beginning of term with a whole day event in the hall. ESOL, languages and international students had the opportunity to share their cultures with each other and the wider college community. COMENIUS ASSISTANT JLC applied to the British Council earlier this year to host a Comenius Assistant. A Comenius Assistant is a future teacher who works to share culture and develop partnerships in another country. We are one of 120 UK schools hosting Comenius Assistants this year and we have welcomed Joanna Salapa from Poland into JLC. OVERSEAS WORK International Centre staff visited China and Hong Kong in November and December 2010 to conduct interviews with prospective students, meet agents and partners and give presentations. Destinations included Shanghai, Ningbo, Chengdu, Xi’an, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Changsha. Future visits to the Ukraine, China and Hong Kong are planned for 2011 and we look forward to receiving visitors from Russia and Vietnam early next year.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGNER Talented product designers from John Leggott College could see their ideas turn into reality after submitting plans for garden hardware to a leading castings company. Winner DANG Yuemeng from Ningbo, China produced detailed sketches of a hanging basket bracket with an oriental design.

SPORTS STARS CHAN Kar Kei Calvin and IP Chun Ki (both from Hong Kong) competed in the British Colleges Sport Regional table tennis competition on Wednesday 17th November. Individually they both reached the quarter finals and together as a doubles pair they reached the semi-finals. This was very good achievement as many who attend the trials are members of academies and/or national squad members.

SUPPORT A huge thank you to parents, agents and friends who continue to support students at John Leggott College. A special thank you to the recently formed Hong Kong Parents Association for their work and support.
