M ATT B A U R L EJUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA
ABSTRACT
• In Gotham, Wonder Woman teams up with Batman take out Steel Fang. The two share flirtatious remarks while fighting, and talk about a kiss they shared about a year ago. Later, at the Watchtower, Wonder Woman sneaks into Martian Manhunter’s Transconscience Articulator to see if Bruce Wayne is the right man for her. The rest is a flash of different scenarios that put Wonder Woman again the Joker, with Bruce as a old man talking about being in love, and fighting some more bad men. She wakes up from the machine to have none other than Bruce Wayne at her side.
THEME/FOCUS
• The theme/focus of the comic is going into Wonder Woman’s head and getting more of a background
Picture Specific combinations give the word
half the panel so they are half of
the focus
This is Picture specific because it’s a transition
between dreams and having a picture with
action words is a beautiful idea
Aspect to Aspect shows action through panels without
words
This full page spread shows a Wonder Woman battle
sequence without words, but you still
understand the action
Face expressions show exactly
how the character is
feeling.
Wonder Woman is showing Joy in
this panel. Laughing at the conversation.
Action to Action uses words and
action to get from panel to
panel.
Here Batman is fighting and talking about the fight as we go from
panel to panel.
Establishing shots set the
scene for where the
characters are.
In this shot is Martian
Manhunter’s machine that
Wonder Woman goes in to see the
future.
Depth in the frame gives the feel for
how large the scene really
is.
The depth in this shot on
themiscrya shows how
massive and how high in the clouds
they are.
The costume is the key to recognizing
who the character is.
This frame gives a beautiful view
of Wonder Woman’s
costume and now we know exactly what to look for when we see her
Eyes mean a lot to a character. The
goal of the eyes is to know who a
character is without seeing
anything but the eyes.
In this panel, you can see the Joker’s face, but his eyes
are telling the story of how psychotic
he is with that stare.
Word-Specific: when the words tell
what is happening in
the frame
The yellow text in this frame is
telling the reader exactly what is
happening in the frame.
Moment to moment: showing a
short amount of action in a lot of frames.
In the series of frames, Wonder Woman is
going into a deep sleep machine. Each frame gets closer and closer to her, showing each
moment.
Loudness is portrayed in comics with BIG FONT
Big font for a big entrance by the joker
in this frame.
The grid system is the base for how
to draw a scene.
The left side of this picture makes
this a one point grid. Making the eye travel to the
back of the frame.
Exaggerated poses are
everything in comics.
The Joker’s face on the left and the
loudness of the font makes this very
exaggerated
When the picture and
words tell the same story, duo-specific.
Wonder Woman is talking about
Batman as the action is being done through
drawing
Body language shows the characters expression
without the face and talking
The body language shown here shows that Batman and
Wonder Woman are showing affection towards eachother
Graphic contrast helps
with the aesthetic of the comic
The contrast of dark to light makes
the panel more intense and makes
you feel for Wonder Woman
Scene to scene is a transition
method and crunches time
These 2 pages are different scenes put back to back showing a reality
to a dream sequence
Subject to subject is an
efficient way of transitioning
through conversations
This full page spread is a big
action sequence, bouncing from
subject to subject with conversation
and action
CONCLUSION
• This project I explored JLA #90 and how it expressed the content in McCloud’s Making Comics. With an look into each concept, and how it appears in an actual printed comic book, it is easy to learn about how comics are made and the thought process behind them.
