MS ACCESS Microsoft Access is a database management system (DBMS) that combines the relational

Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software-development tools.

A database is an organised collection of data.

Database management system is a program used to manipulate the database.

The extension for Microsoft database file is “.mdb or .accdb”

COMPONENTS OF MS ACCESS

The major components of MS Access are as follows:

Tables

Queries

Relationships

Forms

Reports

TABLES

A relational database like Access usually has several related tables. In a well-designed database, each table stores data about a particular subject, such as employees or products. A table has records (rows) and fields (columns). Fields have different types of data, such as text, numbers, dates, and hyperlinks.

PRIMARY KEY AND FOREIGN KEY

Primary key is any attribute or column in the database which uniquely identifies each record in a database. E.g. roll_no in a class, sid in a school, acc_no in a bank, reg_no in a college etc Foreign key is any attribute common in more than one tables which is used to connect these tables together so that data can be retrieved from these tables.

QUERIES

Queries: Once a table is created and the user or programmer is looking for a calculated output, then it is called queries. This may include filtering, calculating, sorting, updating, etc.

RELATIONSHIPS

As the name suggests, when more than one table is added, the relation or connection between them can be achieved. There three ways in which the connection between the tables can be determined:

One to one

One to Many

Many to Many

FORMS

A user interface for a database application can be created using forms.

REPORTS

A report consists of information that is pulled from tables or queries, as well as information that is stored with the report design, such as labels, headings, and graphics.
