Favelas
• 1 million people live in them.• 1 million live in poor quality local authority
housing.• They are on steep mountain sides, normally not
built on.• There are over 600 favelas in Rio.• The largest are Rocinha and Morro de Alemao.• The official definition of a favela is a residential
area of 60 or more families living in accommodation with no basic services and have no legal rights to the land.
Life in the Favelas – The problems
• Crime is the main problem in the favelas.• Organised crime, violence and drug trafficking.• Known around the world for their notorious drugs!• The large mountains cause large amount of
traffic.• This causes pollution and non-stop noise.• In favelas trash is unlikely to be picked up, this
causes pollution to the environment and the water supplies.
• Disease!!1one
Life in the Favelas – The positive!
• Strong community spirit.• A lustrous street life.• A lot of samba music.• Better housing is being built.
Improving life in the favelas
• The authorities are working with locals to improve housing. More public services, like sport areas.
• They have added electricity and satellite T.V. with 25 channels.
• They built a new town called Barra da Tijuca so people would move there instead of Rio.
• Using labour from the favelas, people can learn new skills.• Barra da Tijuca is safer. However, they need workers so
favelas are being built to accommodate them.• Rebuilding wooden buildings with bricks, they are much
bigger. They also have a yard.• They are laying street pavements, concrete paths, pipes for
water and cables for electricity.
Future Effects
• The improvement of favelas will lead to a higher standard of living and quality of life. People will start getting better educations which will lead to more income .
