JING Forum Introduction
ING Forum is the FIRST High-Profile Student-Initiated exchange between top universities in China and Japan (Peking University and the University of Tokyo). Its goal is to allow potential
young leaders from China and Japan to resolve and clarify the misconceptions and prejudice between both countries, and also to build trust and friendly ties through candid talks, directly improving the Sino- Japan relations.
JING Forum is to ● Recognize the challenges facing the Sino-Japan relations; ● Dedicate a just and fair platform to the future leaders of both countries for resolving misconceptions and nurturing friendly ties; ● Create an open minded environment for discussion, backed by authentic, balanced and objective information; ● Focus on in-depth understanding of selected key issues hindering the improvement of Sino-Japan relations; ● Build a growing friendship network among talented young Chinese and Japanese potential leaders, directly contributing to better Sino-Japan relations into the 21st century.
Review of JING Forum 2008: Rich Memories
● Profile “Re-Create Trust, Co-Create Future”
Based on the previous two JING Forum, we understood that most conflicts and hostile attitudes came from the lack of trust. No trust, no understanding; No trust, no cooperation; No trust, no future. Last year, JING Forum concentrated its attention on recreating trust between China and Japan, as well as solving those heated problems.
Structure for 2008 Instead of the original Section-Guided structure, last year’s JING Forum switched to a Topic-Oriented structure. In the new structure, delegates were able to express their creative opinions from all points of view, no longer confined by a fixed theme. However, topics were carefully selected, so that the discussion could surely cover all four original Sections (Environment, Economic, Security, History). Another highlight in forum 2008 was the establishment of the Cross-Section Discussion. In that special section, delegates from different topic groups were reorganized into smaller groups to formulate the semi-formal discussion, thus promoting effective communication and heart-to-heart talks between delegates from different topic groups.

● Main Research Achievements in JING Forum 2008
Business Culture
Big differences existed between the Chinese and Japanese styles of working. Delegates had a deeper insight into such issues and provided information and suggestions for multinational entrepreneurs. A one-day internship and exploration of companies expanded delegates’ experience so as to enhance the understanding of distinct business styles.
Food Security
On this current heated topic, delegates adopted a rational attitude towards the “Toxic Dumpling” issue----they clarified the facts, analyzed its influence, and looked for strategies to recreate trust between Chinese producers and Japanese Consumers. Fieldtrips to food producers in China and wholesale merchandises in Japan helped make the discussion coherent to reality.
History Education
History issues played important roles in Sino-Japan relations as would never be overly discussed at any period of time. On the basis of history education, delegates upgraded to a higher level: to discuss about how history education shapes the general citizens’ attitude. They visited museums and high schools; compared and revised the conflicting views in history text books; and interviewed history scholars in the field.
Public Concern on military issues
On this topic, JING Forum drew its attention to the attitudes of the public. Delegates collected and analyzed the attitudes of the public in China and Japan towards military issues and took an insight on how those trends of public opinions were formed and influenced. They introduced surveys and data analysis so that delegates were able to get access to the objective statistical materials.
CROSS-SECTION TOPIC: Mutual Understanding of Differences in Values
In this special section, delegates were divided into smaller groups and developed their discussion regarding the topics above.
Preview of JING Forum 2009: A New Era
● Theme for 2009
“Create the Future Together”
Jing Forum has undertaken three years of development and growth. We have been adhering to the essential orientation of “Connecting Future Leaders” all the way. As the younger generation, we will undertake the important tasks of promoting future development of our own nation. While

accelerating the development of our own country, we should focus on nurturing communication and exchange, reducing friction and conflict, abandoning the concept of narrow nationalism and enhancing mutual trust between the two countries. Only through sincere, objective, equal and deep dialogue can China and Japan’s youth eliminate the prior misunderstanding and reduce the mistrust between future leaders on each side. Jing Forum 2009 will still concentrate on the disputes while looking ahead in mutual trust and cooperation between China and Japan.
● New Topic Settings
Previous forums have selected and discussed specific academics or controversies through a macroscopic view. In the past three years, we’ve analyzed many events concerning history, economy, military affairs and environment. For instance, history education, the Yasukuni Shrine issue, the Taiwan issue, food safety issues and so on. The previous model helps delegates explore hot spots deeply, however it also bring about some problems. First of all, as the result of relatively micro scope of the topic, it’s difficult for the delegates to jump out of the framework of specific events to a more macro level when investigating Sino-Japanese relationship; Secondly, past delegates discussed the topics by attribution analysis, thus a number of factors have been mentioned many times in general, but were not able to go further due to time limit. Finally, as the issues were highly academic and professional, only limited enthusiasm of society was motivated, and so was the social feedback. Along with reflections above, we’ve undertaken several reforms in topics 1. Considering the achievement of previous Forums, we’d like to jump out of the framework of
specific areas ,but rather find common factors that have impact on individual events and independent academic fields;
2. To think in a reverse direction, we’d like to analyze how divergences exert influence on cognitive and behavioral patterns and how those were exhibited throughout specific conflicts and disputes.
3. The original intention of Jing Forum lies in conveying Sino-Japanese friendliness and drawing
out the future by the joint efforts of youth. Therefore we will take people and society of both nations as the main content of our discussions so as to extend Jing Forum’s social value.
● Topics of JING Forum 2009 Identity & Nation National identity refers to the distinctive features of the group as well as to the individual’s belongingness. Members of one nation tend to share similar belief system, certain traits and norms of behavior, thus such pattern extends to generations. National identities of China and Japan interact on each other owing to their long history of communication. It's like a two-edged

sword: on one hand, national identity is the pooling strength to ensure social stability and to guarantee long-run development; on the other hand, the sense of belonging might turn to be a defense against other groups, resulting in misunderstanding and hence causing international frictions. The delegates are expected to look into how the identity patterns of the two nations affect people's understandings of themselves and each other, find out the historical and cultural factors making the differences. This section is intended to develop a better understanding of the two nations and to build up a harmonious Sino-Japan relationship. Media
In recent years, the political conflicts between China and Japan have gradually become into a national crisis of confidence. We have to say that it is related to misleading effects of the media reports in a great degree. In the Media Group, with preliminary studies, delegates are to understand both the similarities and differences between the media mode of operation, differences between the media practitioners, the media diplomacy, media and government relations, so and so on. In addition, we must face it that the mass media of Japan and China prefer different measures on trade-offs, and also their cognitive capability is various. This Media Division will be concerned about. Delegates of China and Japan will be prepared before hand, and fully share their perspectives during the meeting, then find out some media factors leading to crises of mutual-confidence and conflicts for both. After that, it is supposed to both the mass of information and discussion of our results to the public. The perspective of Jing Forum 2009 is "Building the Future Together ". We hope that through the efforts of young generation of China and Japan, more people from two countries can understand each other in an objective and fair attitude. Then we hope to eliminate misunderstanding, rebuild confidence, and welcome the mutual future. East Asia
What will be the joint endeavor confronting global financial crisis? Is there feasibility for setting up Asian communities with common currency? Will a regional safety net of earthquake resistance and disaster relief be set up? How to confront the aging trend of the Asian population...East Asia, is undertaking challenges in all rounds. However, the tremendous difference among East Asian countries, the severe lack of mutual trust, insufficient experiences of regional cooperation, all contributed to the complexity. China and Japan, as the two key players within the region, are both going to greatly impact those problematic problems. The role-defining of each nation facing the problematic, the space for bilateral cooperation and the potential challenges ahead, all need to be elaborately investigated. East Asia section will examine the Sino-Japan relations under the macro background of East Asia, center around two issues in the field of Economy and Society respectively, and try to outline a mechanism for China and Japan to further develop their bilateral ties and join hands to promote regional development in East Asia. The aim of this section is to propose bilateral collaborations by examining Sino-Japan relations with multi-angles and with an enlarged vision.
