GIANT PULPIT has used an aggressive style which has been a drawback; by dropping so substantially now for just $9,500 he gives himself a much better chance; the blinkers are off and Moreno is on. TWO TIMING took the big drop for $10,000 last time and was made the favourite but wasn’t a factor at any stage; he now moves to the stable of Sam Parro with the blinkers off. RACE #2 BANNON 7 I’SE DUBAI 2 LILLZ NOT CRYING 4 JAIL TIME 5 RED SAHARA ONE POUND STERLING was adamant about being up on the pace last time and that was a tough front end style to be utilizing and he fell out of contention. BRAINFREEZE debuted December 1st and got a nibbling of support for $10,000 but didn’t do much running; Carignan gets the call in this second start.

JAIL TIME has been committed to five furlong racing in recent events and must stretch to six furlongs here; his high energy on the backstretch last time came against the front end winner; he was finally fourth with, I’se Dubai, second. RED SAHARA debuted at a lofty range; an incident leaving the saddling area caused quite a delay; once he made it to the gate he didn’t show much but now gets to run for only $9,500 as a gelding in this second start. RACE #4 BANNON 7 THE OTHER BREEZE 12 TISHINA 3 MIRACLE SILVER 14 STREET REVIEW

YODA MAN showed in his latest that he is made for route racing as he burst away from a group for $7,500 with a furlong remaining and was well clear; he looks for a late season double with Salles. GIANT MINE is certainly suited for route racing and he has had two runner up finishes going long in his last three appearances then was out of the money last time when, Miracle Silver, was better in second. MIRACLE SILVER took the big drop to the $9,500 mark last time and had a booming wake up performance; he seemed to enjoy the slower pace and reached the lead as if he would win but he was edged at the last moment; Boulanger gives him a vote of confidence. ATHENA’S LEGACY went long for $6,000 late last time with some late action inside. POSTMAN PAT showed himself to be a capable router December 7th when he dropped for $8,000 and circled rivals and drew off; Boulanger was aboard then but he is riding, Miracle Silver, and Garcia now rides here. VICTORY L. dropped in for $6,250 last time and had a challenging journey but escaped to be third as the favourite; he is up in value here with Chernetz now aboard. THE OTHER BREEZE competed last time in a race where the early pace was so fast that the top six finishers were all closers; he raced into range and then hung at a crucial stage but did have some of these behind him; his form has improved with lasix added; he now drops for $9,500. COOLSHADE had a mild outside advance on the second turn but was far back finally against a key winner who was dropping down last time. SLAM got back to a comfort level at the $6,250 mark last time where he was an advancing second. REBELLION’S DREAM was behind early last time and couldn’t reach contention and now he goes long. YOU’RE BATMAN competed Wednesday against an overwhelming speed favourite and chased that one and was finally third; he attracted a claim and now goes for Zeljko Krcmar and he will travel a route. TISHINA had so much going for him having built good form October 7th and November 3rd then changed his running style to be close to a scorching pace last time and he would not settle and finished behind in double digits; Wilson takes over after a one race absence and should have him running late as a contender here. WE TAKE CHECKS will be going from a couple of sprints to a route after out of the money finishes and a quick comeback here. STREET REVIEW got far back against a hot pace last time then closed as if he could be a factor; this lower level looks like a good fit for him; Contreras rides.

RACE #5 BANNON 8 AWESOME WOK N ROLL 3 YZERMAN 12 MAJESTIC MELODY 11 BRUTUS

FRANKIE BARONE debuted in a sprint November 2nd and enjoyed staying close to the slow pace where he galloped along on the fringes; he now adds lasix and goes long. SELF INFLICTED dropped in for $40,000 last time at a route after a good fringe try the time before in this category; he drove up inside and landed second last outing. YZERMAN is bred to be a route runner; he debuted at just six furlongs November 23rd where he did adequately to finish third with the more seasoned, Awesome Wok N Roll, in second; a better departure from the gate will be essential with this extension in distance for Don MacRae. SKYNYRD has been hanging around the edges in Ontario sire company and now faces open company; he was second last time against a winner who came from far off the pace. LUCKY STREET has been on turf for both races and showed some run on power last time when a distant third and the runner up has come back to beat some of these. CHANGE AT THE TOP had a good route race back on October 12th; he recently came off the shelf at seven furlongs and seemed to enjoy staying close to the slow pace and will use that as a bridge race to get to this longer event. FAST FAIRY a debut runner for Catherine Day-Phillips is by, Exceed And Excel, a winner at the highest level in Australia on two occasions; he will attempt two turns at first asking after a recent series of preps getting ready and Wilson commits here. AWESOME WOK N ROLL is bred to be a route runner top and bottom; in his opener he couldn’t get going in time; second time out also as the heavy favourite he couldn’t quite catch his entry mate; he now gets to stretch around two turns. MAYAN GHOST a homebred for Stronach Stables is certainly bred to be a stayer by, Ghostzapper, and from a dam who was a two time stakes winner who loved routes and also turf; this one has size; Hernandez was aboard for his most recent trial for Kevin Attard. HE’S A MACHO MAN is a big bodied chestnut going for Josie Carroll in this opener around two turns; he had a good work December 1st at six furlongs getting ready going out seven furlongs in 1.28 to show some stamina potential; Contreras rides in this debut. BRUTUS hit the board in his opener against a key winner but hasn’t been close since; this will be his first route and he looks to be a stamina runner. MAJESTIC MELODY handled himself well up on the pace when going from a sprint to a route November 25th and he was second against a sharp winner from the Attfield stable; he has since had a good work in 47.3 for Barbara Minshall.

RACE #6 BANNON 4 STUDIO B 5 STATION ROCK 8 SILENT BLAZE 10 MAMBOINTHEFOREST

SPRING EDITION dropped down two starts ago and had a fringe try on turf; he went back up in value to a near impossible spot last time and had a mild advance in sixth; he gets in with his own kind here. CAWAJA TIME was aggressive on the pace November 28th when facing maiden special company but he faded gradually against a key winner; now that he drops for $20,000 Wilson takes over. DARK ALE has had good positioning in recent events but has faded at the most important time; Carignan takes over here. STUDIO B was a fringe player on turf two starts ago and ran the same type of race on Tapeta last time with an inside bid; the third place finisher, Silent Jet, has come back to win; he gets to drop for $20,000 and remains at seven furlongs; Kimura now rides. STATION ROCK had such a good race for $20,000 at seven furlongs two starts ago with a rush from fourteenth to be third; he was immediately protected after that; with that race out of the way he comes back to the level of his previous good race. KLASSY DELIGHT was moving up mildly last time without threatening for $20,000. POQUIDO BANDITO had his three race series of in the money finishes broken last time when trying to run from off the pace when a speed runner took top prize; he gets down for $20,000 here. SILENT BLAZE moved up to the $23,500 mark last time for a race at just six furlongs and he landed on the edges when hanging; he had run seven furlongs effectively for $15,000 the time before when second. ROYAL FUERST debuted with early prominence November 18th but backed away; he runs for just $20,000 here. MAMBOINTHEFOREST got down to the $10,000 mark two starts ago and didn’t do much running; he was overambitious on the lead and didn’t stay; most recently he cut back to a sprint and had an outstanding performance in fourth against a key winner in what was his best career effort.

RACE #7 BANNON 10 BELLA NINA 2 BEAUFILS 8 BOYNE RIVER 11 GLIB MARYLIN

UNRIVALED SOUL has sprinted in three consecutive events closing ground relative to the pace and will now extend to a route. BEAUFILS looked like she would win November 24th as she advanced from ninth at the top of the stretch but she finally couldn’t get by the 6-5 favourite and finished second; Wilson has the mount once again.

CONQUER THE COURSE was down for $6,000 last time and opted for a speed style which did not work and she faltered. AWESOMEENDSWITHME moved up behind runners in traffic last time but couldn’t furnish a stretch kick when, Beaufils, was second. RED SAILS is getting her first start since October 9th and she was forced to scratch November 11th; she has put together some works getting ready to come off the shelf. STORMY VISION had an exciting win at seven furlongs two starts ago when dropped down; most recently when she tried to repeat, she was understandably the favourite but she disappeared in the run down the backstretch and then closed belatedly; she goes for new interests at a route. SWEET RETREAT has been out of the money in recent sprints and drafted behind runners last time; she now goes long. BOYNE RIVER looks to be a stayer and two starts ago was third when, Beaufils, was much better in second; she has since had a useful fourth place finish going long. SHOW ME THE PRIZE opted for an aggressive speed approach December 5th and understandably faded out of the money; her win three starts ago came with a relaxed off the pace rally. BELLLA NINA was unlucky in her previous event when second and most recently was simply best at 6-5 at a route looking to be a natural two turn runner; she now tries non winners of two. GLIB MARYLIN was trying to rally when in tight between rivals last time and checked sharply in the stretch and then backed up to be seventh; she had run more prominently late in the race in her previous run.

RACE #8 BANNON 5 SANDY BAY 6 GOLD STING 7 NEVAEH’S DREAM 2 TIMESKIP

WATER POLO was in for $19,000 last time at six furlongs and ran four wide as if he had a chance to win it but he was finally second when the first place finisher came up the rail to edge him. TIMESKIP used a speed style at a route December 1st and the winner scored in that up front fight and this one backed away in fourth; he shortens to seven furlongs; Contreras takes over. ALACRITOUS was aggressive on the pace two starts ago and gave it up very late; he used the same tactic last time battling with the eventual twelfth place finisher and he faded to eighth. UNBOUNDED SPIRIT circled rivals as if he was going to win when dropped for $20,000 last time; he made a clear lead in the stretch only to be beaten at the last instant at a route and the winner came from seventh to beat him; he shortens to seven furlongs. SANDY BAY raced well at seven furlongs back in September when narrowly beaten; he found his best measure at a route November 24th; he prepared a perfectly timed winning rally and the runner up has come back win smartly; he cuts all the way back to seven furlongs but gets to drop for $40,000.

Page 4: JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL DECEMBER 16TH, 2018 · 16/12/2018  · JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL DECEMBER 16TH, 2018 RACE #1 JAIL TIM BANNON 7 PAXOS - BEST BET 1 GIANT PULPIT 6 MAJOR KELLY 5

JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL DECEMBER 16TH, 2018

GOLD STING had the difficult inside post last time and came away last and advanced from twelfth to be third beaten three lengths and the winner has already come back to score; he gets an extra half furlong here and did win at seven furlongs two starts ago; he fits nicely. NEVAEH’S DREAM was aggressive in a four wide pace pursuit November 24th at six and a half furlongs and was beaten late by a closer who has already come back to score; in behind him in third was, Gold String; he faces that one again here. RINGO CLASSIC was ridden from behind last time and didn’t have an impact in a tough spot dominated by a speed winner; two starts ago he rallied strongly to be third against a key winner.

RACE #9 BANNON 5 STREET LEGAL 1 SINE METU 6 LOOKIN AT BRAVO 8 SEEKING THE BAY

SINE METU was good at this time two years ago when he won a race at fourteen furlongs and then finished third in this very race at fifteen furlongs; he was going along nicely in his preparations for this until last time when he missed the break and was a significant disappointment; perhaps one can look beyond that significant flaw; he now competes for Ross Armata. MAJESTIC GOLDMINER was claimed for just a minor sum November 30th when he didn’t threaten a front runner and now he looks to utilize his stamina. ITSTARTSWITHADRINK was in for $9,500 last time and finished third against, Lookin At Bravo, who is here; he did try extended distances back in late summer. WORLD OF PROSPECTS won a marathon at Fort Erie two starts ago then went to Mahoning Valley to cut back in distance last time and the middle pace was much too fast for him; he should like the galloping nature of this race. STREET LEGAL comes out of the ultimate key race when former stakes winners were in the top spots; he finished fourth; perhaps he can gallop along with this group as he does have such a significant class edge on several. LOOKIN AT BRAVO is a stamina source; he beat non winners of three recently with a big looping run from the second flight at nine furlongs and he has had experience in long distance races. TWENTYTWENTYCREST was at a mile and a quarter in a first allowance race last time where she dropped out of contention; she will face the boys here at fifteen furlongs. SEEKING THE BAY had a wide loss in a marathon on turf two starts ago but had run well on Tapeta at two miles back in October; he was in a key race last time that should help him with this easier class adjustment. UNLIMITED RESOURCES a four year old filly with one lifetime victory exits a first allowance race where she was beaten nine lengths at long odds.

RACE #10 BANNON 1 HUSHIN’ RUSSIAN 3 SENT FROM HEAVEN 8 ANALYZER 6 POOL PLAYA

HUSHIN’ RUSSIAN debuted October 28th and had just a hint of recognition at 6-1; he broke well and was quiet in the early going under Wilson who then positioned him to gallop away from that field; he was strong at the end; since that time he indicates two preps getting back including a more recent 1.02.2 trial for Phil Gracey; he is a promising homebred for William Diamant getting more room here. MARCUS was in for $20,000 again last time and fell out of contention; he goes for twice that price here. SENT FROM HEAVEN looks like he can be a factor here; he went from a route to a sprint last time and closed up to be on the edges and both the second and third place finishers were in race eight today; he lengthens out to seven furlongs a distance at which he won in September. BAY OF RUM was in the same most recent race as, Sent From Heaven, and opted for an aggressive pace style then faltered in the stretch. LEGAL GUMP was used to go up three wide last time in attendance to the pace but faltered at a route; he had run better at a sprint two starts ago when on the edges against a winner who has come back to score and both the second and third place finishers were in race eight today. POOL PLAYA has not yet caught on after two races back but continues to work trying to improve his form; Boulanger returns after a one race absence. FULLTHROTTLE KID had sharp early speed last time but did not stay the contest in contention; he lengthens to seven furlongs. ANALYZER returned from time off October 20th and was ready to produce a big win at long odds at a route; the runner up was in the opener today and the third place finisher has since come back to win; he indicates some works getting ready to come off the shelf again; he tries just seven furlongs, his shortest rate to date. DESOLATOR was at seven furlongs two starts ago and was very aggressive on the pace then finished twelfth; most recently with a more relaxed early approach he was able to rally and finish positively on the edges.

RACE #11 BANNON

7 SILENT JIMMIE 4 DETROIT STEEL 3 CHIRICAHUA SIGNAL 2 RINCE TAPAIGH TINKER RING was claimed for a minimum sum back in late October and most recently in a starter event collected third prize with a late run behind a winner who ran quickly; he stretches back to seven furlongs. RINCE TAPAIGH a mare is going against the boys here; she was without her two regular riders last time who were both engaged in the same race but Garcia took over and provided a perfect ride to get her a fourth win of the campaign and her tenth score overall; she is up in value here. CHIRICAHUA SIGNAL has been at the first allowance level over a series of races with continued fringe prizes; he visibly hung last time when he had a chance to close against a key top trio and he landed seventh beaten four and a half lengths and, Detroit Steel, was just in front of him. DETROIT STEEL fell back to last in the early going of a first allowance race at six furlongs last time then advanced to be sixth beaten only three lengths despite reports of a less than ideal journey; he stretches to seven furlongs BLU WITHOUT YOU was cutting back from a route to a sprint last time and unfortunately speed carried throughout the day at a disadvantage to closers; he was using an off the pace technique that landed him in fourth beaten two and a half lengths; he is up in value but rates some respect. SPEIGHTSTOWN TIME won for $9,500 November 30th and the runner up has already come back to win for $8,000; he jumps in value here. SILENT JIMMIE was at the first allowance level two starts ago when a positive fourth and the runner up was a key performer; he ran even better at this exact distance last time when narrowly beaten with a quiet early approach; he seeks his initial win on Tapeta. WET YOUR WHISTLE is coming in from Fair Hill for Michael Trombetta who has raided successfully this season; he competed in a first allowance race at an abbreviated distance November 22nd and was a non threatening seventh in a race dominated by the two favourites; his attempted outside close was ineffective.

RACE #12 BANNON 8 NORTHERN CRUSADER 2 BALA FALLS 3 KID FORESTER 1 CHEEK TO CHEEK

CHEEK TO CHEEK has run well on the edges the past while; most recently, he was in against a bold rallying winner and settled for third as he hung at the end; Contreras takes over as Hernandez rides, Leopoldo; he worked forwardly December 1st in 1.00.3 out in 1.14.3.

BALA FALLS debuted November 25th at just five furlongs in a quickly run race and was running on through the stretch despite laying in; he was finally second but a long length better than, Kid Forester, for the place award; he now stretches to six furlongs. KID FORESTER debuted at short odds November 25th over five furlongs and that was a speed race and trying to run from off the pace was more challenging and he finished third about a long length behind the runner up, Bala Falls; she should enjoy the move out in distance; the fifth place finisher has come back with a drop to win. HUNGARY got involved in a hectic on the pace fight going long November 30th and retreated in double digits; he shortens to just six furlongs and had run well at seven furlongs in his previous event. SEVENTH WONDER had a good race at five furlongs two starts ago against open company setting the pace and finishing third beaten a length; most recently against Ontario sire rivals, he had a significant letdown after he lost an early pace fight. VIVIDARI a debut runner for Laurie Silvera, is by Old Forester and from a dam who was stakes placed as a two year old and she has produced a couple of winners; he had a keen work from the gate November 24th in 36.1bg beating company. DES BOIS went vastly better second time out when dropped down; he raced on the pace against much faster fractions and was finally fourth in the much quicker split when facing the 2-5 winning favourite. NORTHERN CRUSADER debuted October 20th in what was a speed race and he was trying to run from behind; he finished a positive third beaten two lengths from far on the outside; the top two have both come back to win smartly and the seventh place finisher has since come back to win; he indicates just a single half mile work getting ready to come off the shelf after almost two months and that prep came over two weeks ago. LEOPOLDO a debut runner by Queen’s Plate winner, Eye Of The Leopard, is from a dam who liked turf and synthetic surfaces; he will debut here for Sylvain Pion from the outside with Hernandez aboard; he had his quickest work to date December 8th in a smart 1.01.1b.

RACE #13 BANNON

4 KING AND HIS COURT 9 SURGICAL STRIKE 10 FREITAG 7 FIRE FOR EFFECT TALE OF THE NILE elected to use a speed approach and the fractions were too quick when returning here November 11th; most recently, he also opted for a speed style and retired; he attracted a claim from that last event and now goes for Sylvain Pion. ADMIRALITY PIER was a talented juvenile last season and had high hopes this spring; this will be his first start since June and he has had a number of works to build up for this return which comes with blinkers off for Barbara Minshall.

JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL DECEMBER 16TH, 2018

HOLLOW POINT ran strongly in an option al race last time beginning from tenth and finishing third beaten just a length behind a winner who was able to steal away and the runner up, Silent Jimmie, was entered in race eleven today; he is now asked to go from a sprint to a route. KING AND HIS COURT is seeking his initial win of the campaign and exits the Sir Barton Stakes where the slow pace was against his fortune; he was attempting an off the pace run and after being fanned on the last turn he advanced positively in fourth; he looks to be a natural to contend here. RUN AWAY has been competing at sprint distances with late rushes and moved very late last time to be fifth; the winner has already come back to win big; he now stretches out. SPECIAL FORCES was going first time off the claim for Kevin Attard October 27th when he captured a first allowance victory at nine furlongs on Tapeta despite laying in through the stretch; Da Silva was aboard then but he is on, King And His Court, and Garcia is brought in for this ride; he is returning from a layoff. FIRE FOR EFFECT was going first time off the claim for Norm McKnight November 25th when he won a first allowance race by commanding the late pace; he now goes to the next level looking to double up. CONQUEST LEMONRAID has had some exciting off the pace rushes in sprints but remains winless for the year; he goes from consecutive Tapeta sprints to a route here for Mark Casse. SURGICAL STRIKE is just now getting back into the game after missing significant time and in his second race following the layoff November 10th he did well to close up and finish second to, Melmich, who has since been the runner up in the Valedictory; he did have, Freitag, a length behind him in that last event; he seeks a breakthrough win for the first time since 2016 for Justin Nixon. FREITAG has had lots of preparations getting ready and finally resumed his career September 9th and wasn’t far away against a key group; he also ran competitively last time when, Melmich, was the winner and, Surgical Strike, was second and he landed third. HOLD’EMFORRANSOM captured the front end early November 10th and went all the way for a first allowance score; he goes to the next level and has had positive interim prepping 1.01.1 with a good closing quarter for Ian Black.

RACE #14 BANNON

4 KILLAG KATIE 13 SPRINGDETTI 9 A GREAT TIME 14 SAHARA BREEZE 3 BEAUTIFUL STREET

MARCHERDOWNTHEALLY was given a perfect winning ride at this distance by Wilson getting up in time; most recently, running from off the pace was difficult to do because of the speed nature of the race and she was fifth with, A Great Time, in second.

SOTHATSTHEWAYITIS fell out of contention early last time then tried to make up ground late in a first allowance race where she finished fourth and, Killag, Katie was second; the sixth place finisher has since won. BEAUTIFUL STREET landed on the edges at seven furlongs two starts ago and in behind, Killag Katie; she went to a route last time where she set a slow opening quarter mile then tried to steal it in the middle stages but she was reeled in late and finished third; following a fast interim work she shortens to seven furlongs. KILLAG KATIE was at seven furlongs two starts ago and had a fine try when tied for second and narrowly beaten; most recently, she went long and was ridden up into contention but could not get by the front running winner; she shortens to a sprint which is a good angle for this stable. CLOSE IMAGE encountered such a slow pace last time and tried to make a move in the middle stages but couldn’t sustain that approach; she comes off the shelf for this final start of the local campaign and seeks her third win. PRINCESS ROYAL was at seven furlongs last time where she used some of her middle speed to press the pace before weakening; she seeks her initial win of the year. PHIL’S GLORY is getting her first start since October 3rd and she does show several recent works getting ready to come off the shelf; she moves up in value here. PODGORA was trying to run from behind at six furlongs for $19,000 last time and did pass some rivals without threatening. A GREAT TIME came in from Fair Hill for Michael Trombetta and ran better than expected at 8-1 December 2nd; that race belonged to a strong front runner and this one was reserved off the pace and then closed up when the late pace weakened. I’LL TAKE THE CAKE competed on the speed portion of the card November 23rd and was running from just off the pace and was somewhat tentative inside and finished an ok third; she lengthens to seven furlongs. SECRET MASQUERADE was asked to run her best on the turn last time to try and keep in contact with the leader but she finally finished third beaten about three lengths with, A Great Time, second. RAVINIA hung at six and a half furlongs two starts ago then shortened to five furlongs last time where she rushed late in third and the winner has already come back to win big. SPRINGDETTI is a speed runner who was at seven furlongs in this category two starts ago and she came up just shy when, Killag Katie, was a bit better; most recently at only five furlongs she further sharpened her speed and was second best behind a winner who has come back to win; she must stretch back out here for Bruno Schickedanz and Norm McKnight. SAHARA BREEZE seemed to be wanting more room November 10th but came back at the same distance and was simply better than that group with a sharp rallying maiden win; she now goes to the first allowance level with Moreno taking over. SWEET RHAPSODY is a three time winner in four trips this season and her streak was broken last time in a starter event over six furlongs when she was simply second best losing the speed battle to the winner; she must stretch to seven furlongs here and go up in value.
