I look up and I see the sky.
It becomes part of me.
My feelings like clouds
against the clear blue vastness,
scudding across the backdrop of
infinite consciousness.
I look out and I see the ocean.
It becomes part of me.
My memories like islands in a sea of
universal mind.
-Jill Joy
consciousnessThis series of paintings by Jill Joy references the sky and sea as metaphors for universal consciousness, the backdrop against which the individual soul experiences and evolves. Using techniques she developed with oil paint and special mediums, she creates luminous, abstract paintings that live with the light, changing like the sky changes as the sun makes its daily passage from dawn to dusk.

This work is striking;
the off-center void allows
my eye to rest on something;
my mind to contemplate.
It is like a window, and the
seemingly perfect white of
the void provides a sense of
the infinite.”

A wave.
has crashed through my life
and separated me
from what has tormented me
and sustained me
I sit here in the silence
in the receding tide
Wondering.
what will become of me

“This painting is ridiculously
seductive. Viewing it as
the light changes, I often
have the sense of subtle
movement. Perhaps the
best description might
liken it to molten lava.”

“Jill’s colors are vibrant and expressive. Her application is studied and purposeful yet easy and expressive. The concept
of emergence of the concrete from the nebulous field of unformed potential attracts me. The passive smooth universal
field is yet active in its bands of changing color even when they are different tones of the same hue. The concrete forms
she uses have areas that are just as passive even when they are surrounded by the more energetic impastos. A kind of
yin containing yang and yang containing yin.”

about the artist
Jill Joy lives and works in San Diego, California. Finding inspiration in spiritual development and a mystical perspective on life, Jill’s paintings are at once dynamic, peaceful and luminous. Her work references the sky, the sea and the landscape of her own consciousness and communicates the interrelatedness of all things.
