Contractors Environmental Management Plan
How the Contractor will ensure that he complies with the environmental conditions and requirements whilst building the project
CONTENTS OF A CEMPTypical contents include:• Project description;• Laws and regulations;• Roles and responsibilities;• Impacts of the project;• Mitigation measure;• Performance goals;• Review mechanisms; and• Reporting.
Typical Impacts• Soil and Water;• Noise and Vibration;• Air quality;• Flora and Fauna;• Traffic;• Heritage; and• Waste.
Soil and WaterImpacts Typical Mitigations
Sediment polluting rivers and creeks • Erosion and sedimentation control plans.
Soil instability • Erosion and sedimentation control devices.
Soil erosion
Pollution of groundwater • Lining of storage dams.
Noise and VibrationImpacts Typical Mitigations
Construction noise impacting on community e.g. schools
• Restrict working hours and ensure machines are fitted with effective mufflers.
Construction noise impacting on residents
• Build permanent noise mitigations (e.g. noise mounds, walls) early.
Vibration from construction (from rollers, trucks, blasting damaging buildings and other structures
• Restrict size of compacting equipment and how close it can come to structures; and
• Maximum instantaneous charge limit for blasting.
Air QualityImpacts Typical mitigations
Dust generation during works • Watering of works; and• Use of dust suppressants.
Dust generation from bare ground • Limit area disturbed at any one time; and
• Progressive revegetation.
Vehicle emissions • Regular servicing and inspections.
Flora and FaunaImpacts Typical Mitigations
Destruction of flora • Delineation of work area / exclusion area.
Destruction of fauna • Tree and vegetation Clearing procedures.
Loss of habitat • Ecologists on site.
Loss of biodiversity • Biobanking/Offsets.

Operational Management Plan• Monitor environmental impacts relating to the
operation;• Establish standards and criteria for maintenance
and monitoring activities;• Provide details of the management structure,
responsibility and authority;• Provide a framework for compliance and record
keeping; and• Provide an audit/inspection regime to ensure
documented, periodic and objective evaluation of environmental performance.
Erosion and Sediment Control• Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation
(RUSLE) :A = R x K x LS x P x C where
• A = computed soil loss in tonnes/ha/year• R = rainfall erosivity factor• K = soil erodibility factor• LS = slope length/gradient factor• P = erosion control practice factor• C = ground cover and management factor.
