‘Need for Speed’ Sequel in the Works With EA, Chinese Partners

A sequel to last year’s “Need for Speed” is in the

works, with the same Chinese partners that

helped Paramount make “Transformers: Age of

Extinction” teaming up with Electronic Arts in

hopes of co-producing.

Much of “Need for Speed 2″ would be filmed in China, with the nation’s actors also taking

significant roles, according to an announcement of the new arrangement by joint venture partners

China Movie Channel Program Center, Jiaflix

Enterprises and 1905 Pictures, along with

Electronic Arts, creator of the “Need for Speed”

videogame.

The partnership can not proceed until it negotiates to secure rights to a sequel, which are currently held by

DreamWorks. Those talks have not yet begun, according to a studio representative.

The first “Need for Speed” effort featured “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul and, despite mostly poor notices from American critics, performed decently in the U.S. and broke out worldwide. The film earned $203 million on an

estimated production budget of $66 million. It performed particularly well in China, bagging about $65

million.

The films play off the wildly popular videogame, which has grossed more than $4 billion in retail sales over

the last two decades. The gamemaker plans to release new “Speed” console and mobile games this year.

“We are excited to work with EA, one of the world’s most recognized creative companies,” said Yin Cao,

chairman of China Movie Channel. “We are also delighted that much of ‘Need for Speed 2′ would be filmed in China, and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent and elements.”

Jiaflix president Marc Ganis predicted the launch of “one of the next great franchises for movie fans around

the world.” His company was founded by Ganis, Kenneth Huang and Sid Ganis, former president of the

Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

The third partner, 1905 Pictures Co., is a Chinese film development company that worked with Paramount on

promotion and marketing of the last “Transformers” film, which grossed a record $330 million in China.

As an official co-production with the Chinese companies, the film would have ready access to that frenetically-

growing market. The creative team has not yet been announced. If a final deal can be struck, production

would begin later this year. UTA represents the Chinese partners and Electronic Arts.

'Need for Speed' Sequel in Development as U.S.-China Co-Production

A sequel to the 2014 action thriller Need for

Speed is being developed.

A joint venture between China Movie Channel,

Jiaflix and 1905.com has teamed with game

publisher Electronic Arts to make the film. It will

be an official co-production, which means much of the movie will be filmed in China with a

significant amount of local talent.

The co-production is the latest in a flurry of deals

between Hollywood and China, after Bob

Simonds' STX Entertainment pacted with Chinese

film company Huayi Brothers and Lionsgate announced a major tie-in with Hunan TV.

The original 2014 movie, based on Electronic Arts’ hit video game franchise, was released by Disney’s

Touchstone Pictures and grossed more than $200 million in worldwide theatrical box office, with more than

$65 million of that coming from the China market.

Cao Yin, chairman of China Movie Channel, said he was delighted that much of Need for Speed 2 would be

filmed in China, and include much more Chinese talent and elements.

"This venture is another great endeavor to bridge the cultures between China and the West through films. We

look forward to cooperating with excellent films and filmmakers to thrill and entertain movie lovers

internationally with more outstanding films with Chinese labels," said Cao.

China Movie Channel, Jiaflix and 1905 Pictures most recently teamed up with Paramount on 2014’s

Transformers: Age of Extinction, which took more than $300 million in China and was the biggest movie in

Chinese history.

The Beijing-based venture was involved in the film’s production as well as the design and implementation of the China marketing, anti-piracy and grassroots programs.

Jiaflix streams international feature films in partnership with the China Movie Channel’s streaming movie

website M1905, both of which operate under China’s State Administration of Press, Publications, Radio, Film

and Television (SAPPRFT).

The company was founded by Hollywood veteran and former Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences

President Sid Ganis, Kenneth Huang and Marc Ganis.

'Need for Speed' Sequel in Development as U.S.-China Co-Production cont.

"We look forward to bringing our market expertise and execution strategies to the project to accelerate

demand and drive box-office performance in China," said Marc Ganis.

The creative team for the film will be announced in coming weeks, with production anticipated to begin later

this year, the companies said in a statement.

The sequel is being packaged by UTA, which represents Electronic Arts.

The EA videogame franchise has sold over 150 million units and grossed over $4 billion in retail sales during

its 20 years of high-octane chases. This year will see the release of both a new console game and new mobile

game in the franchise.

Need for Speed starred Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) as street racer Tobey Marshall, who sets off to race cross-

country as a way of avenging his friend's death at the hands of a rival racer.

The film was directed by Scott Waugh, written by George Gatins and John Gatins and produced by Mark

Sourian, John Gatins and EA’s Pat O’Brien.

‘Need For Speed’ Sequel?

Trio Of Chinese Partners In Early Discussions With EA And DreamWorks

Jiaflix — the company hatched by former Movie

Academy head Sid Ganis, Kenneth Huang and

Marc Ganis to facilitate the production and

distribution of films in China — is partnering

with China Movie Channel and 1905 Pictures

and are in early talks to develop a sequel to Need

For Speed as an official China-U.S. co-production.

The trio of Chinese companies are in talks with

Electronic Arts and DreamWorks to secure the rights to move forward with the project. They previously worked

with Paramount with great success on Transformers: Age Of Extinction, and envisage Need For Speed 2 as an

English-language pic filmed in China with significant Chinese talent attached.

There is no cast, writer or director yet, and negotiations are still ongoing for the rights, but sources tell

Deadline that DreamWorks Studios is open to looking at a proposal from the trio and potentially exploring a

deal. Aaron Paul-starrer Need For Speed, based on EA’s hit vidgame franchise, grossed more than $200 million

worldwide when it was released in 2014 and was especially successful in China, where it grossed more than

$66M — by far the biggest overseas territory for the pic.

905 Pictures is a subsidiary of, and fully funded by, state-owned China Movie Channel and 1905. It has a joint

venture with Jiaflix, a hybrid SVOD-transaction VOD platform, that has the ability to distribute through IPTV,

WiFi and set-top-boxes, in addition to theatrically. The trio previously collaborated on Transformers: Age of

Extinction, which grossed more than $300 million alone in China and becoming the country’s all-time top

grosser.

“We expect this partnership, which brings together a winning brand like Need For Speed with the team that

propelled Transformers 4 to unprecedented success, will create one of the next great franchises for movie

fans around the world,” said Jiaflix president Marc Ganis.

UTA, which reps EA, would package the sequel if it moves forward.

Need For Speed 2' Is Actually Happening

Last year, the franchise hopeful "Need For Speed"

opened at number three at the box office, but

couldn't even sputter to $45 million domestic on

a $66 million budget, and pretty much seemed dead on arrival. But that's only looking at one side

of the story. Overseas, the movie earned $159

million, and all it takes is a look at last weekend's

box office for "Furious 7" to realize people really

like cars driving fast and crashing into things. So,

they're gonna give this "Need For Speed" thing

another shot, with a heavy investment from

China.

China Movie Channel, Jiaflix, 1905.com and video

game company Electronic Arts are teaming up for "Need For Speed 2." So, why are Chinese production houses

interested? Well, $65 million of that $159 million overseas take for the first movie came from China, so they

are betting audiences will likely return.

No word yet if any of the original cast — Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, Kid Cudi, Dakota Johnson, Dominic Cooper

— will be returning, or if this will just be a reboot with new faces in the mix. My guess is the latter. But all

those details, plus who will direct, will be coming soon as production is aiming to start later this year. [THR]

‘Need for Speed’ Sequel Revving Up in China; Is ‘Furious 7’ Owed Thanks?

China Movie Channel, Jiaflix and 1905 Pictures are developing a new film that would be a U.S. co-production “Need for Speed” may have had a bumpy ride in

U.S. theaters last year but it was a runaway hit in

China, where three top production and finance

companies have announced plans for a sequel

that will be developed as a co-production between

China and the U.S.

Joint venture partners China Movie Channell

Program Center, Jiaflix Enterprises and 1905 Pictures are teaming with Electronic Arts, the publisher of the hit “Need for Speed” video game series, on the sequel to Scott Waugh‘s action-thriller “Need for Speed,” which

starred Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots and Michael Keaton. There is no director, no writer and no

actors attached, as the creative team for the film will be announced in coming weeks, with production

anticipated to begin later this year.

As an official co-production, much of the sequel would be filmed in China with significant Chinese talent. The

film is being packaged by UTA, which represents Electronic Arts.

“Need for Speed” grossed $200 million worldwide, though the film earned more than $65 million in China.

Taking that success into consideration along with the worldwide popularity of the “Fast and Furious” franchise,

which also features racing, a sequel makes some sense — as long as the budget can be kept in check.

EA’s “Need for Speed” franchise has been popular with gamers worldwide for more than 20 years, having sold

over 150 million units and grossed over $4 billion in retail sales. This year will see the release of both a new

console game and new mobile game in the franchise.

Joint venture partners China Movie Channel, Jiaflix and 1905 Pictures most recently teamed with Paramount

Pictures in last year’s top-grossing movie “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” The Beijing-based venture was

involved in the film’s production as well as the design and implementation of the China marketing, anti-piracy

and grassroots programs that resulted in record-shattering box office. “Transformers: Age of Extinction”

grossed more than $300 million in China, smashing the previous record by more than 40% to become the

most popular movie in China’s history.

Jiaflix is the entertainment industry’s leading production and digital distribution partner with China, bridging

interests and understanding to enhance results in the world’s fastest growing market. Jiaflix was founded by

Hollywood veteran and former AMPAS president Sid Ganis, Kenneth Huang and Marc Ganis.

A subsidiary of and fully funded by China Movie Channel and 1905.com, 1905 Pictures is involved in many

areas of the film industry including development, production management, co-production, marketing and

distribution. Earlier this year, the company acquired the Indian film “Happy New Year” and launched it in

theaters across China. The release was significant as it was the first film imported under the Indian-China film

treaty signed last year.

China-US alliance plots 'Need For Speed 2'

The Chinese JV triumvirate of China Movie Channel Program Center, Jiaflix Enterprises and 1905 Pictures are teaming up with Electronic Arts on the English-language sequel.

As an official co-production, the bulk of Need For Speed 2 will shoot in China with a significant Chinese talent element.

A production start is anticipated later this year on the sequel to the 2014 Electronic Arts (EA) action adaptation

released via Disney. Need For Speed, starring Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul as a street racer fresh from prison and

out for revenge, grossed more than $200m worldwide including a $65m haul in China.

EA releases a new console game and mobile game this year.

China Movie Channel, Jiaflix and 1905 Pictures most recently teamed with Paramount on 2014’s Transformers:

Age Of Extinction and played an integral role not only on production but designing the marketing, anti-piracy

and grassroots campaign.

The joint venture aims to bring the same involvement and local expertise to Need For Speed 2.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction ranks as the highest grossing release of all time in China on more than

$300m.

UTA represents EA and is packaging Need For Speed 2.

China Movie Channel chairman Yin Cao said: “We are excited to work with EA, one of the world’s most

recognised creative companies. We are also delighted that much of Need For Speed 2 will be filmed in China,

and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent and elements.

NEED FOR SPEED FILM SEQUEL TAKES THE SERIES TO CHINA

A sequel to last year's Need for Speed movie

staring Aaron Paul is in the works, Electronic Arts has announced.

According to Variety, EA is partnering

with China Movie Channel Program

Center, Jiaflix Enterprises, and 1905 Pictures to

produce a followup film set in China.

"We are excited to work with EA, one of the

world’s most recognized creative companies," China Movie Channel Yin Cao said. "We are also delighted that

much of 'Need for Speed 2' would be filmed in China, and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent

and elements."

It's no surprise that EA is looking to set the sequel in China, as the 2014 film performed incredibly well in the

region, raking in approximately $65 million.

There's no word on the film's casting just yet, so Aaron Paul fans will have to wait until EA is ready to release

more information. In the meantime, be sure to check out Jim Vejvoda's review of the first movie.

Need For Speed Sequel Confirmed

Paramount Pictures has greenlit a sequel to last year’s Need

For Speed movie.

Need For Speed 2 is expected to be co-produced by

Electronic Arts (the developer of the Need For Speed video

game franchise) and Paramount, but fellow studio

Dreamworks must first relinquish their rights to the

franchise.

Much of the film is expected to film in China, and will feature

a number of the country's domestic actors. No word has

been given if Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, who held the

lead in the first Need For Speed, will return.

While Need For Speed didn’t do gangbusters in the United States box office, it performed extremely well in

China, earning about $65 million.

“We are excited to work with EA, one of the world’s most recognized creative companies,” Yin Cao, chairman

of China Movie Channel, told Variety. “We are also delighted that much of ‘Need for Speed 2 would be filmed

in China, and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent and elements.”

Stay tuned for more updates on Need For Speed 2 as they break.

‘Need For Speed 2’ Heads to the Starting Line

Furious 7 is the number one movie in the world,

breaking box office records left and right. In a

totally unconnected and wildly coincidental bit of

news, a sequel to last year’s racing film Need For

Speed is now in the works from Electronic Arts

and a bunch of Chinese partners. What are the odds?!?

Variety has the details on the story:

“Much of Need for Speed 2 would be filmed in

China, with the nation’s actors also taking

significant roles, according to an announcement

of the new arrangement by joint venture partners

China Movie Channel Program Center, Jiaflix Enterprises and 1905 Pictures, along with Electronic Arts, creator

of the Need for Speed videogame.”

Need For Speed was no Furious 7, creatively or financially. But the movie, which starred Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, and Dominic Cooper, did make $200 million worldwide, a solid number despite earning just $43 million

in the U.S. Strong overseas grosses (including a whopping $65 million in China alone) explain foreign

investors’ interest in a potential sequel.

There’s no word yet on whether Paul will return for the new film, and Variety notes that EA’s partners will

need to negotiate for the rights to the sequel away from DreamWorks, who released the first Need For Speed.

Assuming they can successfully do that, the new movie would go into production later this year. So get ready:

Here comes Need For Speed: Second Gear! No? Okay, how about Need For Additional Speed? Needier For

Speed? Wait, I’ve got it! 2 Need 2 Speed! Oh yeah, that’s the winner right there.
