Blood&Life

M ost of us will know that we cannot live without blood – it is

not an option! Blood is essential for good health.

Under normal circumstances we do not lose blood but sometimes, unfortunately more often than we care to think about, because of an accident or ill health, people need blood. Other people’s blood!

The last thing you need when you are in need of blood is to have to start looking for blood. This is why we have blood banks all over the UK.

Eligible people (and most people are eligible) donate blood as often as possible. Donating blood could be one of the most important things you’ll ever do. It is a safe and easy process which takes approximately an hour.

The actual blood donation part takes about 10 minutes...and the pinch of the needle only lasts a second. That one second of pain could change someone’s life forever. The rest of the hour is spent doing the essential

administration and allowing you to recuperate if necessary.

A Life lineDonating blood is important because each donation of one pint can save up to three lives! All blood donations use sterile needles, which are used one time by a donor and replaced after each donation.

An hour every two months is all it takes to help a newborn baby’s heart complications or a new mother who has lost a lot of blood in the emergency caesarean section or to help an elderly gentleman involved in a car accident to survive.

The human body carries an average of 10 to 12 pints of blood, and the pint you donate will replace itself within 24 hours.

Unfortunately there is often a shortage of minority donors of blood which means that the likelihood of a person of a minority background being saved by someone elses blood is slimmer than that of a non-minority.

Donating blood could be one of the most important things you’ll ever do.
