The Apprenticeship LevyThe Levy is a tax that was introduced for businesses that have a payroll of more than £3m per annum. This means that an additional 0.5% of PAYE tax is put into a pot and utilised solely for Apprenticeships.

Organisations are able to use their Levy for internal training in the form of Apprenticeships within their business to recruit or upskill existing workforce. There is always the need to upskill new and existing staff. Very often it is difficult to find excellent candidates to complement existing workforces, the solution is to upskill existing staff. The Apprenticeship Levy provides a sustainable way to achieve this.

Apprenticeship Standards

All Apprenticeship Standards are available to view on the Institute for Apprenticeships website.* At The JGA Group, we offer a range of Apprenticeship Standards tailored to Events, Business & Digital services.

If you cannot find a match, the Trailblazer mechanism enables you to get together with like minded employers and create an Apprenticeship that perfectly suits your business and your industry.*

Added Benefits for the Employer

With the lower salary that Apprentices accept in return for training by both you and your training provider, National Insurance benefits and the government payment for Apprentices aged 16-18 it is easy to calculate a maximum gross year 1 cost-benefit of nearly £8,000 for an employer who takes on an Apprentice.** This reflects the time they spend training and that they are not yet the ‘finished product.’

Employer Cost Benefits

Apprenticeships can be a way to introduce new people to your organisation, to transition the demographics or to provide upskilling to well-deserving existing staff.

Soft Benefits

JGA recommends a minimum wage in London of £5+ per hour (for a level 2). For multi-year apprenticeships the wage must rise to the national rate for the age group at the end of the first year.

Bear in mind that Apprenticeships are part of the labour market and you get what you pay for in terms of education and experience.

Salary

You will not have to pay any Class 1 National Insurance contributions for Apprentices aged under 25.

National Insurance

13

Page 15: JGA€¦ · Award winning High-Quality Training Provision Apprenticeships, Training & Partnerships Evolution, Innovation ... Entry Requirements - A Levels or equivalent levels are

Added Benefits for the Employer

At least 20% of the Apprentice’s time will be spent in off the job training. This may be shadowing a colleague, working online, classroom-based or a work-based improvement project and will add value to your organisation.

Training

*source: BEIS Apprenticeship Survey 2015.** Assumes £5/hour Apprentice wage vs £8/hour non-Apprentice wage, 37.5 hr/week saves £5,866 in year 1. Employers National Insurance savings: £990. 16-18 incentive from government: £1,000. Total £7,865.

If you employ someone aged 19+ then the government will pay for 90% of the Apprenticeship training costs. You will be charged for 10% of the training costs.

If you employ a 16-18 year old Apprentice the government will pay you £1,000 to offset the extra costs of your working with a young person. If you also have fewer than 50 employees then the government will waive your financial contribution to the training cost.

Small Firms

If the annual payroll of your organisation is greater than £3m then HMRC will be collecting an “Apprenticeship Levy” tax. The government tops this up by 10%.

The sole way to get value for this money is to spend it on Apprenticeship training to upgrade the skills of existing employees or to recruit. If you employ a 16-18 year old Apprentice then the government will pay you £1,000.

Large Firms

This may sound complex but don’t worry, JGA has been doing it for years and will make sure that you receive your entitlements!
