We are happy to report that we have sponsors for both Torahs, which means that we will not need additional donations to acquire the Torahs. Additionally, during this process, we have learned the origin of the Levine Torah. It was donated many years ago by Mike Hallem, a JCC Board member. His generosity is acknowledged and appreciated. The Levine name may have come from the seller of the Torah. In any event, the Levine name has been used for many years and is the name that our Scribe, our clergy, and our Torah readers are familiar with. LOOK INSIDE!!!

Inside this issue... The JCC of LBI Torah Project is moving ahead. We have already reconditioned two Torahs (the Torahs in memory of Jennie and Morris Shapiro) and our third Torah, which we have called the Levine Torah, is currently in the hands of Scribe Neil Yerman for similar treatment. Through the generosity of two families of donors, all of this work has been paid for at no expense to the JCC of LBI. Words from the Rabbi...

When we read the Torah, we strive to seek

alternative meanings and broader ideas. The

text is more than the words that are strung

together; it is more than the narrative and the laws. The text is to be explicated and used to

inform our lives.

It is an oft-cited notion that Judaism favors action over mere thought, or faith. We don’t merely talk about love of God and humanity; we do things to physically express our love of God and the world around us. We are taught from an early age to do good deeds and we are, almost genetically, compelled to try to make the world a better place. This manifests itself in many ways. As a people, we tend to place an emphasis on education. As proof of this, simply Google “Nobel Peace Prize” and find the plethora of articles about how Jews are disproportionately represented on the list of Nobel Honorees. One genesis of this need to learn, and the consequent educational success of our people, can be traced to our tradition of studying Torah.

Uniquely, we Jews don’t passively read the Torah; we don’t simply accept what is contained within our holy scripture. Rather, we actively study it, discuss it, and dissect it. The Rabbinic tradition, from which we are all descended and to which we are all connected, teaches us to never be happy with understanding a word or a sentence merely as it is written. Because of this, when we read the Torah, we strive to seek alternative meanings and broader ideas. The text is more than the words that are strung together; it is more than the narrative and the laws. The text is to be explicated and used to inform our lives. In our tradition, this is one way that our scripture becomes truly Holy. But why have we placed such a focus on the study of the Torah? In Pirke Avot, at 5:22, we are told that Yochanan Ben Bag Bag (yes, that was his

name!) said of the Torah: “Turn it, and turn it, for everything is in it…” So important is the Torah to us that Pirke Avot, at 3:18 says that it is a “...Tree of Life to those who take hold of it, and those who support it are fortunate.” The tree metaphor is perfect. By giving us food, wood, shade, oxygen, and more, a tree provides for all facets of our lives. Our tradition tells us that the Torah does all of this -- and more. In a few short weeks, we will be celebrating the holiday of Shavuot, which, among other things, commemorates our receipt of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Our tradition tells us that, as Moses was on the mountain, our ancestors stood at its base. But, interestingly, we are also taught that all Jewish souls were present. In this way, we were all there to witness God’s revelation and to receive the Torah. This historic event is so central to our tradition, that we relive it each time we read the Torah. The choreography of the Torah service is very specific. The Ark is opened and, as theTorahs inside are revealed, we reenact Sinai by standing. We re-receive the Torah as it is

The President’s Message! Thanks to the officers, board members, dedicated generalmembers, and the rabbi who remain in the NJ area for most of thewinter months, our JCC continues to function, to be active, and toprovide services to our Community during the months when many of ourmembers are far away. And now we are beginning the busy -- and sometimes frantic --summer season. Many activities are already planned for the next fewmonths. They include social, cultural, educational, and religious events, with enough diversity to offer something of interest to all members. I

hope you will take advantage of many of these.! Many of these activities take a lot of work. As I have asked many times in past years, pleasestep forward and volunteer to help. The more people working, the less each has to do. I have heardmany comments indicating that our volunteers get more satisfaction out of the help they providethan the efforts they put into it.! You do not have to be on our Board of Trustees to chair a particular activity. Anyone can do so

or make a significant contribution to the planning, theperforming of, and the success of any activity you have aninterest in. I periodically list some of the JCC committeesand chairpersons with the hope that you will call one ormore of them and offer your help. PLEASE DO SO – Callthem, or call the Office. Below is the list of those JCCcommittees and chairpersons that would like additionalhelp.

! As I finish writing this article on Sunday, April 12, I hope that each of you had a wonderful Pesach. Judith and I did, and, following an old tradition, we really enjoyed going out to dinner last evening at an Italian restaurant with Pasta, Bread, and Beer. We look forward to being back to LBI on May 3 or 4 to greet members and friends face-to-face and to see all the changes and improvement to the JCC building that took place over the winter. That’s only three weeks away.! ! ! ! SHALOM,

Jonathan Falkowsky David Falkowsky

Twins Jonathan and David Falkowsky of Barnegat will become b’nai mitzvot on Saturday, June 27th, at 9:30 am, at the JCC ofLBI. Both boys, students in the JCC Hebrew School, have been involved in their chosen community service project, working with the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, allowing them to practice the concept of giving back to their community. Their parents, Ira and Julie Falkowsky, say that, though they are twins and look similar, they are really quite different. David has a love of vintage machinery and a tremendous curiosity. He always wants to know how things work and what makes them tick. Jonathan, on the other hand, is much more of a freethinker with a wonderful imagination and a keen eye for detail. He loves to draw and can recreate on paper almost anything he sees. What they have in common, their parents say, is their tremendous respect for their studies and their thirst for knowledge. Jonathan and David’s parents say that they have watched their sons grow “from two wonderful boys to two wonderful young men, right before our eyes,” and they are thrilled to reach this milestone at the JCC of LBI in June. The twins, they say, “have earned our faith, love, and respect, and we are incredibly proud to see them reach this point.”

Please Help to Make a Minyan!! An important obligation that a congregation has to its members is providing a minyan intimes of Yahrzeit or Shiva. The JCC has been pretty good about this, but we must try to dobetter. Minyans are sometimes needed at the JCC, or at Shiva homes on LBI or the mainland. We have prepared a list of names, along with telephone numbers and email addresses of thosethat agree to being called periodically to perform this mitzvah. There is no obligation to attendeach time called, but we hope you will participate periodically. The more volunteers we have, theless time each will have to be called. Harris Weisel has agreed to be our Minyan Coordinator. Hewill contact people by phone or email when necessary.! Please let the Office know if we can add your name or names to this list. As an egalitariancongregation, we are interested in males and females. Volunteers that are in the area all year, oronly in the summer are needed. Consider this like a bank account- having a sufficient number ofnames available helps assure that a minyan can be provided when needed by you. Look forinformation this summer on a class to make you more familiar with the Shiva Service, and on itscustoms.

Don’t delay!! BE A MINYANAIRE.Help perform this Mitzvah by contacting the Office NOW

Sisterhood ReportWe had a very successful Seder, with 92adults and children in attendance, whichis the most we have ever had! This yearwe tried assigned seating, which workedout well. Rabbi Jay made the Sederenjoyable by involving many inparticipation. Lynn Berkowitz, Rabbi Jay,and Cliff Farin made the 10 plaguesalmost seem fun. I even think Mosesshowed up for a few minutes at one point! The food was great, as usual. I believeeveryone had an enjoyable evening.

We are now getting into gear for the summer, so, if someone calls to ask you to participate, please do! We still have afew who have not renewed theirmembership, but I am sure they will.

Words from the Rabbi Continued from Page 2

paraded around the Sanctuary, never turning our back to it. We then, as a community, hear a portion of the Torah as it is chanted with a traditional melody. Brilliantly, the Rabbis took the Sinai revelatory tradition one step further. It is the Rabbis who stressed study and Torah interpretation. By doing this, they ensured that the Revelation was not a one-time event. Indeed, through our tradition of study and explication, revelation occurs continually. Our Rabbinic tradition even took into account the fact that there are many different types of learners and many variations on world-view. The Rabbis taught that there are 70 facets of Torah; there are multiple ways that each word, line, sentence, or story contained in the sacred scroll can be understood. This enables the Torah to grow and evolve as we, too, grow and evolve. One way to symbolize the various interpretations that are possible is by having more than one Torah scroll in the Ark. The JCC community is fortunate because, for much of our existence, we have had three Torah scrolls. Showing great foresight, when the new Ark was designed, it included space for two additional Torah scrolls. Through good fortune, JCC President Don Pripstein’s lifelong friendship with the president of a synagogue in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and with the help of God, the JCC has learned that there are two Torah scrolls available for purchase. Through the JCC’s recent Torah Project, chaired by Harold Farin, we have received sufficient funds to acquire these Torah scrolls. (Forgive me for observing with pride that our JCC family is extraordinary for delving into projects with all of our heart, all of our might, and all of our soul.) Though the new Torahs need to be checked to make sure that they are kosher (and repairs will certainly need to be made), we are excited to have the opportunity to become their new home. The great 12th century sage and teacher Maimonides said that writing a Torah is one of the greatest mitzvot a person can perform. Writing a Torah can be expanded to acquiring and/or repairing a Torah. For most of us, the ability to undertake this mitzvah only comes around once in a lifetime. Such an opportunity has presented itself to our community and it, as our ancestors did at Sinai, accepted the challenge and received the Holy Text. May the acquisition of these Torahs be a blessing to our community, and to the Jewish community at large. And may our “full” ark symbolize our desire, as a community, to learn Torah, to teach Torah, and to bring Torah’s message of loving kindness and performance of good deeds to the world. Amen.

Rabbi Michael Jay

Summary of the Board Meeting on March 10, 2015:Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, V. Fitts, Arnie Galer, Barry Goldman, Paula Hait, *Rabbi Jay, Richard Morgan, *Carole Nunberg, Stuart Pepose, *Don Pripstein, Jeri Riffle, *Susan Sheehan, Karen Schwing, Stuart Snyder, *Rose Valentine *Participatedvia phone • Rabbi Jay said the shehechiyanu prayer for the two new board members. He said that, as we approach Pesach, we start emptying

the cupboards of hametz. One of the main purposes of Passover is to help us create memories. Many of us are parents or grandparents -- part of the JCC of LBI community’s role is to create memories attached to this community, and we are doing a pretty good job of that. Goal for next year: recognize that part of our obligation is to help people create memories.

• Rabbi Jay reported that the minyan this past Shabbat was 20 people. Because we did not have Purim (bad weather), we celebrated on Shabbat with a luncheon and a 15-minute Megillah reading. He said that the service was great and shows that the need/interest is there.• L. Berkowitz moved that we designate the office workers as employees after much research, discussion, and legal advice. The office

staff has been informed of the change. A company called Paychex was retained to write checks and make deductions at a cost of about $844/year. L. Berkowitz said that the attorney they met with was very clear about how to determine an employee from a contractor.

• Farin said that the scribe will be returning the two Torahs and will be taking our third one for repairs. We plan to start a Torah fund drive and ask members to sponsor a portion of the new Torah. This could bring a level of excitement -- it offers members the opportunity to be a part of a synagogue. R. Valentine added that having a culminating event with the people who are involved would be a very exciting event for the community.

• R. Valentine thanked K. Schwing and the rabbi who are working on blog-type communications. Watch for the new Rabbi’s blog. JCC T-Shirts in the varying sizes will be coming in to the office soon, and people can order after seeing them.

• S. Pepose said that he was happy to report that there was a good response to the Shabbat services. There were 20 in attendance on Saturday, March 7; there were 18 in February. He believes that we have proven that we can do it, and it is now up to us to agree to move it into a regular commitment.

• L. Berkowitz is working on the training for a bar mitzvah on June 27th. There will be three Confirmands and one post-confirmand on Shavuot. When she made Hamentaschen, almost every student came with parents/grandparents. The community Purim Carnival was held in Brick. Several members attended and participated in various ways (running games, etc.).

• S. Fruchterman reported that a lot of work is being done to beautify our Social Hall.• B. Goldman reported that as membership chairman he hopes to increase membership. He will ask that members give him a list of

Jewish people whom they know in the area who are not JCC members. He also plans to reach out to the local over-55 communities.

Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, Sherry Fruchterman, Barry Goldman, Paula Hait, Rabbi Jay, Richard Morgan, *Carole Nunberg, Stuart Pepose, *Don Pripstein, Jeri Riffle, *Susan Sheehan, Karen Schwing, Mickey Sherry, Lori Shomer, Stuart Snyder, *Rose Valentine *Participated via phone• Rabbi Jay noted that we are in Va’era -- the Torah portion in which God says to Moses: Go to Pharaoh and tell him Let My People Go. Why

didn’t God just do this himself? If God goes, he is violating his own invisibility rules. Rabbi thinks that God is calling on Moses to serve as a business partner -- which is apropos in this meeting; we form committees to help us accomplish things. We need to do a better job of getting people “in” with us -- making a commitment. Each of us should do the job of bringing others in to help. He also reflected on the devastation in France last week -- the victims were buried in Israel yesterday. He and the board said Kaddish for these souls.

• H. Farin said that a part of what we have approved at a previous meeting was to repair two Torahs. The torah in memory of Jennie Shapiro will be away for another couple of months. The scribe has provided all the documentation necessary so far. The one in memory of Morris L. Shapiro is about 140 years old. This Torah will come back next week. Motion made to approve up to $7,000 to repair our 3rd Torah. Motion was seconded and approved.

• D. Pripstein announced that T. Schwait and E. Levin have resigned their board positions for personal reasons and Fred Schragger & Arnold Galer were the two names that got the most board votes -- to finish the two terms being vacated. A motion to approve F. Schragger and A. Galer was made and approved.

• R. Valentine discussed an outreach program to attract people who are non-observant outliers in our community -- interfaith marrieds, those who are unfamiliar with service, etc. There may be a grant for a program that we can apply for to do the program in May. The cost to apply is minimal ($50). She would like to go forward. L. Shomer noted that this could open doors that are currently closed. The rabbi would work with this committee. There is a lot of potential. The program was approved and R. Valentine will move forward with this.

• L. Shomer asked if anyone knows of people who would like to teach a course. Ideas submitted after Feb. 1st will be considered for 2016. If something is to go into the booklet -- it must be to L. Shomer by March 1st.

• B. Goldman had a meeting with the rabbi -- re: how to attract membership. What would make people join? They discussed: services, changing the structure of Friday evening services, getting out into the community instead of being JCC-centered (eg: doing a service at the Mirage), public space Judaism (eg: Rabbi could be at a coffee shop at pre-announced times, encouraging people to come and chat with him)

• L. Rabbi Jay said that Sherry ran into a cantor from a large reform congregation from up north, and he expressed an interest in coming here and being a guest cantor in the summer...the rabbi will reach out to this cantor.

• L. Berkowitz reported that school has resumed with her return from Israel. The students recently learned about Israel and made Israeli flags on Sunday. The older kids are moving along.

• S. Pepose reported that we tried a Sat. morning service in December, and it had good attendance. It was agreed that we will try to have at least one each month during the winter months.
