Jewel in the Palace - Episode 1

Jang-Geum s father, Suh Chun Su, having a archery competition with other teams. He then later

found out that his hand was bleeding and the arrow broken when he was about to pick the arrow

out. This is a bad sign. Later on, he was assigned to feed the current Queen poison. She is the

mother of YeonSanGun, and because of unfair reasons, she is kicked out of the palace and herhusband (at the time is the King) orders people including Suh Chun Su to be witnesses and

deliver poison to her. Before the Queen dies, she cursed that everyone that was involved, andhanded her mother a bleeding cloth which contains her blood. This would be showed to her son

when he grow up, so that her son (the future King) would take revenge for her.

Jang Geums father felt very guilty over this matter. He drinks alot of liquor and gets lost in theforest, hearing voices of the queen and her maid. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a dark

cave. He then met a spiritual man, who predicted that 3 women will change his life, and that he

will eventually die. The first lady is far away from this world, but she is still alive (who is theEmpress that he had already met), the second lady would die for him, although he had save her

life, and he would die because of the third lady, although she will save many people. If he dont

want to die, he should not meet the second and hence would not meet the 3rd lady. There is alsohint showing that the 2nd lady where her head would immerse in water. Confused, Chun Su

pleads the master for a clear explanation but the master vanishes in the air. Because of his words,

Chun Su becomes aware and promises himself that he will never get married. He makes up his

mind to live somewhere else to avoid woman number 2.

14 years later,Jang-Geum father was still haunted by the incident. Meanwhile in the Palace, they

were busy preparing for the Kings mother birthday ceremony. Pu Royal Maid, or rather JangGeums mother, saw her friend, Choi Cheng Qing (a.k.a Court Lady Choi) secretly putting

poison into the dish which would be presented to the Kings Mother. She immediately report this

matter to Court Lady, but because that Court Lady is related to Choi family, the Court Lady tells

Chort Lady Choi what Pu Royal Maid saw. Obviously, the Chois plan to kill Yeon San Gunsgrandmother is ruined. Afraid that Jang Geums mother will tell anyone (she already told her best

friend, who later becomes Court Lady Han), she was accused for having an affair with a Guard(they found the white powder that the guard gave her as a present, thanking her for helping him

out), which is not true. She was supposed to be poison to death, but she was saved by her friend,

Han Ae Choong (a.k.a Court Lady Han) secretly. The next morning, she was found and saved her

life by Jang-Geums father, and when he first met her, her head was immersed in the river. This isa hint that signify he had met the second lady in his life. He kept following her, because he was

worried that she would die for him. Soon, love began blossom and they got married.Jang-Geum

was born later on


However, things are not so good, the current King, which is Yeong-Shan King (which is the mostviolent King recorded in the Korean Ancient History) found out her mother was actually

poisoned to death. He lost his temper and ordered his men to kill all the people who are involved

with his mothers death.

When Jang Geum saw her fathers uniform and his knife, she asks him where these are from. He

tells her (even though he is not supposed to) that he once used to work in the palace. Days later,

there is a big feast. Suh Chun Su and Jang Geum go outside and they see people wrestling formoney. Jang Geum asks her father to try out, since he used to be a Royal Guard. He hesitates, but

he goes out anyways and surprisingly, he wins. The big wrestler gets mad, stabs himself, and

lying to people that Suh Chun Su stabbed him. They get angry for what Suh Chun Su have done,and want to drags him to police. Jang Geum yells at them that her father is not a cheater, and

accidentally revealed that his father was an ex-Royal Guard, and hence he was arrested. Because

of JangGeum, her father gets into more trouble, since people recognizes him from Wantedposter that had his face drawn. This showed that the prediction that was made by the spiritual

man is true.

It was a law that if someone commits a crime, then that persons family members would also be

punished. Jang Geum and her mother have to run away. Jang Geums mother sends a letter to her

best friend Court Lady Han for help. Her best friend receives the letter and she is happy that Pu

Royal Maid is still alive. However, Court Lady Choi is shocked to see Jang Geums mother andCourt Lady Han together. Afraid that Pu Royal Maid will tell police what Chois have done, Lady

Chois brother orders his servants to capture Jang Geums mother. After finding out about whatthe Chois did to Jang Geums mother, Lady Han reports to the police that the Chois hide SuhChun Sus wife, as thats the only way to get Jang Geum and her mother out of that Chois place.

As a result, Jang Geum and her mother receive a light punishment (working as slaves). On the

way to Jeju Island to begin their new life as slaves, Lady Chois brother orders his servant to killJang Geums mother.

In the ambush, her mother was shot by arrow and Jang-Geum was safe. Before closing her eyes,

she leftJang-Geum a letter, but she could only read it if she becomes the Highest Person inCharge of the Kitchen in the Royal Palace, also also so that Jang Geum can write a story in the

book that entitles to Highest Court Lady only (passed from Head of Court Lady to another for

generations) about the unfair accusation of Jang Geums mother and how bad the Chois are. Thatis whyJang-Geum wanted to get in the Palace to fulfill her mothers dream.


Jang-Geum was later adopted by a Wine-making family, De Jiu (Kang Duk Gu) and his wife. On

one occasion,Jang-Geum sent wine to the King-to-be, Prince Jung Jong. She pleaded Jung Jong

so that she could be a Royal Maid, and he agreed. That is howJang-Geum successfully enteredthe Palace. After JungJong successfully replaced King YeonSanGun as the King, Jang Geum is

brought into the palace. In the palace, she met her best friend, Yeon-Sheng and also Geum

Yeung(they used to be very close). With determination,Jang-Geumpassed through the exams,

and she was taught by Court Lady Han, which is her mothers best friend in the Palace. CourtLady Han had no clue at all aboutJang-Geumbeing her best friends daughter. In the palace,

Jang Geum is bullied by Ling Lo (Yong Ro). She thinks of the recipe that her mother kept at the

back kitchen (where all the things used is returned and washed). So she goes there with YeongSheng.

In the back kitchen, Jang Geum and Yeon Seng cause a major trouble. The supper for the King

JungJong is gone. Luckily Court Lady Han able to prepare another delicious supper with just a

limited ingredients. The King likes it, and they spare greater trouble. However, the teaching

Court Lady wants to expel Jang Geum from the palace, only after plea from Jang Geum, she isgiving the only chance to participate in examination to be Royal Maid.

In the examination, Head of Royal Kitchen purposely tests Jang Geum with the most difficultquestions, and to all surprise, she is able to answer all of them. Without choice, they have to

accept Jang Geum and order her to be under supervision of Court Lady Han. Under the strict

supervision, the talentedJang-Geum showed her determination and hard-work in learning thebasic cooking skills from Court Lady Han.


The Highest Court Lady of Royal Kitchen is sick, and Court Lady Choi secretly asks a maledoctor from outside the palace to treat the Highest Court Lady. But the incident gets caught, and

the Highest Court Lady have to resign. And later, Court Lady Zheng, has became the temporarily

Highest Person In-Charged of the Kitchen, due to the fact that Court Lady Choi hasnt ready forthe position, and thus breaking the tradition of Family Choi inheriting the same position for

generations and generations. Court Lady Zheng indeed becomes a determined Head of Court

Ladies, to the surprise of Chois. There is where all the rivalry starts, because the Choi Family andtheir supporters had under-estimated Court Lady Zhengs determination and will, to break Choi

Familys tradition. In fact, Court Lady Zheng is hoping that Court Lady Han to inherit her place

after her death. In the meanwhile, Court Lady Choi also teaches Keum Young secret receipt ofChoi family, hopefully she can has better cooking skills.

Soon,Jang-Geum and her fellow friends became adults


Jang-Geum is becoming an excellent cook but shes still kinda wild, not always obeying therules and running around all the time. The princess is sick and doesnt eat for many days so the

kitchen people are cracking their brain trying to figure out something for her to eat. Every time

they bring something to her, she simply refuses to eat after a bite.

Geum-Young (Hong Ri Na) goes to talk toJang-Geum (Lee Young Ae) who is making her

fermented soybean pastes. Geum-Young tastes one of the samples and asks how it doesnt stinklike it usually does.Jang-Geum tells her its because she used coal to kill of the smell. Then

Geum-Young goes back to the kitchen and asks her mom if she can make the next meal for the

princess. So she use the coal to remove the smell from the rice and the princess eats the whole

thing. Its because she added the same ingredientJang-Geum used to kill of any smell, as it turnsout princess was turned off by the smell of food. The whole Royal Kitchen gets rewarded and all

the supervisiors are praising Geum-Young. But Keum-Young mentions she was inspired by Jang-

Geums method.

Later comes the celebration of King JungJongs birthday. The ambassador from Ming Dynasty

presents precious golden rooster which was reared by the Ming Dynasty Royal Palace itself.

Geum-Young is told to guard the bird for a couple of days. She puts it in the cage but the cagedoor gets loose and the golden chicken is missing the next morning. Geum-Young is panic, and

decides to sneak outside of the palace to ask her relative Choi Pan Sul if he can find another

golden chicken for her. (Its against the palace rule for the girls to leave without permission). Onher way to sneak out, she runs intoJang-Geum who offers to help. So the two sneak out

together. They go out and arrive at the Choi Pan Suls house but hes out for a few days soJang-Geum offers to make a trip to Kang Deok Gu to see if he can help since hes well versed inimported goods. So they part their way and decide to meet the next morning.Jang-Geum finds a

bird after a lot of trouble. But while she is on her way to meet up with Geum-Young she runs into

a group of people fighting, and she decides to save the injured person (Min Jung-Ho). So she isvery late when she gets to Choi Pan Suls house and Geum-Young is already leaving to the

palace, although she has been waiting for quite a long while despite repeated chase by Court

Lady Choi to go back to palace. They also found a golden chicken, and ensure that the route back

to the palace is safe.

Jang-Geum has to sneak back into the palace all by herself but the route she used to escape wassealed off so shes stuck outside the palace and gets caught by the guards who later take her to theRoyal Kitche.


Jang-Geum is told to leave the palace for breaking the palace rule by sneaking out without

permission. All the senior Court Ladies beg on her behalf, but no avail. She starts packing. Hermentor, Court Lady Han (Yang Mi Kyung), pleas, begs and gives up her promotion privileges for

the next 3 years in exchange forJang-Geum to stay in the palace. FinallyJang-Geum gets to

stay in the palace, but is sent to a herbal vegetable field outside of the palace instead. Theres

usually where all the demoted people goes because that place hasnt had much luck in last fewyears, as they failed to cultivate the precious medicines needed.

On her way there, Jang Geum runs into Min Jung-Ho (Ji Jin Hee) but they dont meet each other.Jang-Geum sees that all the people in garden dont work but drink and sleep all day long instead,

just like they have all gave up on life, but she doenst sit still as what she is told to. She starts to

read the farm and medical journals and successfuly cultivates a very hard-to-grow herb in Korea.But the corrupt officials sends someone to ruin the crop, as he was making loads of money as the

middleman in importing the herbs, so he doesnt want to lose that income. But the Doctor Jeong

Woon-Baek, the chief on the garden, who usually is drunk, figures out a way to trick the corrupt

officials servants so that the Justice court gets involved to investigate the situation. The Justicecourt is shocked that the garden can figured out a way to grow the rare crop and the judge wants

to know how they did it.Jang-Geum gets praised and she gets sent back to the Royal Kitchen.

She is informed of the good news by Young Seng.

Doctor Jeong Woon-Baek want to help Jang Geum to improve, so he asks her carry a letter to

drop off at the library on her way back to the Royal Kitchen. At the libraryJang-Geum cant findanyone so she begins to read the books instead. Min Jung-Ho arrives and explains the meaning of

a word to Jang-Geum and he tells her that palace women are prohibited in the library, butJang-Geum gives the letter to him. He opens the letter which says to let the one who delivered

the letter given the privilege to read whatever book she wants to read, as the doctor believes she

will help the people with her talents. The letter was actually written to someone who no longer

works at the library. So Min Jung-Ho tellsJang-Geum to let him know whenever she wants toread a book and hell get it for her.


Jang-Geum returns to the Royal Palace. Everyones happy to see her back except the gang of

Choi. At this time, the Royal Kitchen apprentices / maid servants are busy preparing for the foodexamination. The examination consists of 2 parts, and will determined if theyre qualified to be a

palace girls. First part the girls are suppose to be quizzed on their scholar knowledge. The second

part they girls need to test on their cooking skills. But the ingredients are limited so the one thatdoes better in the first part of the examination gets to pick the ingredients first, following by the

second best, and so. The one that doesnt do well will have to cook with the remaining less-

desirable ingredients.

During the two-part examination, the supervising palace lady asks a question using a poem that

reads clothes but not clothes, head but not head, human but not human and the Royal Kitchenapprentices are supposed to figure out what food dish the proverb is referring to. Geum-Younggets the answer right away, then other maid servants get it, butJang-Geum and a few others

dont manage get the answer before times up. The answer is dumplings (because it looks like a

head, wears chothes, but its not a person).Jang-Geum didnt manage to answer because she wasaway from palace while one of the superiors explained the metaphor to the Royal Kitchen

apprentices.

So the girls take turn picking out ingredients to be used next day for the cooking examination. A

bunch of new girls with higher ranking come to supervise and help to prepare.Jang-Geum is

assigned a young girl, who happens to be the daughter of one of the supervisors (without others

knowing).Jang-Geum finds out her flour is stolen by someone during the night. Its devastatingbecause everyone is supposed to make dumplings the next day and without flour you cant make

the dumpling skin. SoJang-Geum looks for flour and tells her superior that her portion has been

stolen and asks for more but shes told thats not allowed. So she has to make due with what shehas left with. LaterJang-Geum figures out the one who stole her flour is the new young girl. So

Jang-Geum goes to the kitchen and sees the girl making dumpling soup. The two start arguing.

Then the guards hear them and goes into the kitchen and asks whats going on. Among them isMin Jung-Ho as he is one of the Royal Guards. The girl confesses she stole the flour because her

mother will be sent away after the exam (forced retirement due to age and sickness, as they dont

allow to die in the Royal Palace) and she will never see her again, and her mothers favorite food

was dumpling soup so shes making the farewell supper for her mother. The Royal Guard leaderis shocked that a palace girl has a mother inside the palace (not usually allowed, Geum-Youngs

maternal identity is also kept a secret). They decide to keep it secret, since the mother (at that

point of time the girl believed is the Head of Royal Kitchen Lady), who has been a good royalservant. SoJang-Geum is left without flour the next morning. She spends all night trying to

figure out how to make dumplings without flour. During the examination she makes dumpling

with steamed cabbage as skin. One of the judges really likes her creativity but the rest of thejudges think its not good for her to pass the examination especially after she lost her ingredient.

The Head Court Lady Zheng announces names of the girls that passed the exam. Those who

have to pack their bags right away to leave the palace. Theyre cutting down the staff to trim all

unnecessary palace girls. One by one the names are called. Geum-Young passes but when shestarts to read a list of people who didnt pass, Suh Jang Geum is in there.


Jang-Geums name is on the list of people who didnt pass the exam. At this time, the queen

arrives and she begins to taste the food and is enchanted by Jang-Geums cook both in taste andcreativity. The mother of the young girl who stole the flour, who is also the person tasked to in

charged of this examination and the ex-head of Royal Kitchen tells the queen it was actually her

fault thatJang-Geum lost her ingredient which resulted in her failing the test. The queen ordersher subordinates to allowJang-Geum to stay in the palace.

The palace girls that passed the test, includingJang-Geum are officially recognized as palacecooks.Jang-Geum go see her adoptive family. On the way back she stops by her mothers grave

site and tells her deceased mother about her success and weeps. She remembers her mothers

words and her mother telling ofJang-Geum to be the best palace cook, and to look for her secretrecipe book she hides in one of the kitchens inside the palace.

Min Jung-Ho learns from the captured foreign woman that the one who saved him was a woman

who had a gold bird with her. So Jung-Ho goes around town looking for information on thewoman. He arrives at Kang Duk Gu, Jang-Geums adoptive mother and fathers home (also the

wine maker) and asks about the woman. The wife stops the husband from telling Min Jung Ho

aboutJang-Geum for fear of getting her into trouble.

The Royal Palace kitchen women are ordered to accompany the king on his hunting adventure to

prepare food for the king and the generals up on the mountain. A girl makes a mistake in

preparing the ingredient causing food poisoning to herself, another maid, and Court Lady Han. So

Court Lady Han asks Geum-Young to take charge and ordersJang-Geum to help.

Later, the king sends a messenger to let the girls know the king wants to change the menu to coldnoodles. Geum-Young andJang-Geumpanic because there is very little time to prepare all the

food and Court Lady Han is resting from the illness. Geum-Young prepares the soup but the taste

is plain due to lack of ingredients and time.Jang-Geum thinks of an idea and starts runningtoward the spring water source with a bucket. She fetches fresh mountain water but gets her ankle

injured on the way back.

Geum-Young andJang-Geum make cold noodle soup with the spring water which gives the

soup base a refreshing taste. The king and his generals return and the cooks bring food to them.


The King JungJong (Lim Ho) and his generals taste the cold noodle and they like it. Geum-

Young andJang-Geum are praised for their quick thinking and skills.

Jang-Geum notices Min Jung-Ho looking at her. Later,Jang-Geumpractices writing and Min

Jung-Ho sees that her brush is too think. So he looks for the little brush chain thing that thewoman who saved him left by his side. He realizes he doesnt have it with him because he

changed his outfit.

Keum-Young and Min Jung-Ho exchanged looks and a few words. It turns out he is the one shehas

secretly admired since she was young (when she was saying goodbye outside of Min Jung-Hos

room because she has to be a palace woman and from that day onwards, she is a woman of the

King and not the other mans).

Geum-Young realizesJang-Geum and Jung-Ho know each other. She asks her about it andJang-Geum tells her

he was the one she ran into on her way back from the herbal farm garden to the Royal Kitchen

while deliveringa letter. Jung-Ho asksJang-Geum if she has read all the books he sent her. She says yes so he

offers to give her new books to read in a few days.

Jang-Geum and Yeon Saeng are sent to a sub-division of the Royal Kitchen temporarily becausethey need help.

ActuallyJang-Geum has been dreaming of going there because thats where her mothers secretrecipe book is hidden.Jang-Geum goes out at night looking for the book in the kitchen. Yeon-Seng who share a room withJang-Geum realizes somethings up with Jang-Geum.

Court Lady Choi gives Geum-Young a cursed silk and tells Geum-Young to hide it in thekitchen. The cursed silk contains an evil spell against the queen who is pregnant, which will

change her fetus from a boy to a girl. Geum-Young tries to get out of doing such evil thing but

she succumbs to Court Lady Choi and goes to the kitchen at night to hide it.

Yeon-Seng watches Geum-Young goes in the kitchen to hide the pouch and leaves. Then she seesJang-Geum coming to the kitchen looking for something. Yeon-Seng confronts Jang-Geum and

shows her where Geum-Young hide her thing. But Jang-Geums mothers book falls from the

ceiling rod andJang-Geum grabs it and runs outside.

The kitchen lady finds the cursed silk in the kitchen, as it wasnt well hidden anymore afterYeon-Seng messing with it, and finds outJang-Geum was in the kitchen the night before from

Geum-Young.Jang-Geum is confronted but she cant say why she was there because her mother

told her never to tell anyone, and the last time she told a secret, her father got killed. SoJang-

Geum says nothing and she is jailed inside a room until she will talk.

Court Lady Jeong (Head of Royal Kitchen) later finds out what the curse is about. Meanwhile

Yeon-Seng tells the Court Lady she saw Geum-Yeung hide something inside the kitchen, andJang-Geum was looking for something not hiding anything. So the Court Lady Jung asks Geum-

Young what she was hidding and whatJang-Geum was looking for. Geum-Young denies hiding

anything andJang-Geum refuses to say anything so both girls are locked inside the room. TheCourt Lady Jeong tells them tomorrow she will send them to investigation court, so they will

speak. When the two are alone,Jang-Geum asks Geum-Young if she did it and Geum-Young

says No, You did it.Next day, the Court Lady gets ready to take them to be punished.

Court Lady Jung is about to takeJang-Geum and Geum-Young to the justice court. Court Lady

Jung Sang Gongs superior (Jae Jo Sang Goon or Head Court Lady) stops her and orders to forget

the incident. Court Lady Jung Sang Goon gets suspicious something strange is going on. Right

Prime Minister Oh Kyum Ho tries to fix things quiety.

Court Lady Han Sang Gong goes to Jang-Geums room to look for the item thatJang-Geum

found. She asks Yeon-Seung to show her the place whereJang-Geum goes to practice cooking.The king asks Court Lady Jung whats going on since everyone seems gloomy. Court Lady Han

asksJang-Geum to tell her the truth about her being in the kitchen that night.ButJang-Geum

weeps telling Lady Han the last time she told a secret her parents died so she cannot say a thing.

Court Lady Han Sang Gong weeps with her.

Court Lady Han remembers the past about her best friend getting poisioned and left to die as a

scapegoat and worries thatJang-Geum will die too. Court Lady Jung Sang Goon decides to lets

go of the events to save the girls. Court Lady Choi Sang Goon tells Geum-Young no matter whatto never ever tell anyone about the cursed sachet.

Gang Deok Gu (the wine-maker/chef-on-order who is like Jang-Geums father) tries to con

palace guards with herbal medicine balls. He gets caught but for a different reason. The headguard tells Kang Duk Gu the prince became extremely ill after eating medicine cooked by Kang.

Kam is blamed for poisioning the prince causing the childs arms and legs to become inmobile.

The royal doctors cannot find the source of poisioning and are unable to cure the prince. TheKing becomes extremely worried and Kang Duk Gu is doomed to die.

Jang-Geum works day and night trying to figure out the cause of the princes handicap and

unconsciousness


Jang-Geum figures out the princes illness is from food poisioning stemming from eating a

combination of ginseng with soybean porridge that was lacking in oils.Jang-Geum discovers the

reason by food poisioning herself. The royal doctors cure the prince after finding out what thecause was. The king orders his subordinates to award Jang-Geum. Kang Duk Gu is let go, thanks

to Jang-Geums rescue.

Court Lady Jung Sang Goon suffers from a weak health so she may have to step down from her

post. Its Head Court Lady Jae Jo Sang Gongs birthday and traditionally the Court Ladies Sang

Gong has to cook feast for her.

Court Lady Choi brings food and presents to Head Court Lady to please her. Court Lady Jungcooks up birthday feast with help fromJang-Geum since Court Lady Jung is weak and losing her

taste palate. Head Court Lady Jae Jo Sang Goon yells at Court Lady Jung after tasting the food

saying its horrible and disrespectful. Court Lady Jung tellsJang-Geum the problem doesnt liein the food.Jang-Geum later discovers that she cant taste flavours in food.

Court Lady Choi asks the medical lady about Court Lady Jungs health and finds out Court LadyJung suffers from weak legs which will eventually worsen her health. Court Lady Choi tells her

brother to help her to push Court Lady Jung out so she can be the next head of Royal Kitchen.

Jang-Geum asks the medicine lady about her inability to taste the flavours and the medicine ladytellsJang-Geum to wait since she might still be under the consequences of food poisioning.Jang-Geumborrows more books about medicine from Min Jung-Ho to learn about her illness.

Court Lady Choi bribes Head Court Lady Jae Jo Sang Gongs servant to help persuade HeadCourt Lady to make Court Lady Choi the successor of Court Lady Jung.

Court Lady Jung tells the King its time for her to retire since shes getting old and ill. Court

Lady Jung asks the King if its okay to set up a cooking contests between Court Lady Han and

Court Lady Han to trust her own skills and have no fear. Court Lady Han tellsJang-Geum thatCourt Lady Jung risked her life to give Court Lady Han the opportunity because Court Lady Jung

does not want the place where food is prepared to ever become a place for power and greed.

Court Lady Han tellsJang-Geum she intends to stir up courage from within to win the contest

and asksJang-Geum to be her assistant.Jang-Geum tells Court Lady Han she cant because she

lost her taste palate since she ate the ginseng combination. Court Lady Han tells Jang-Geum towait like the medicine lady said butJang-Geum says its been over 10 days and still no sign of

recovery.

Court Lady Han takesJang-Geum to seek medical advice outside of the palace. The doctor tells

them there isnt much they can do and it may take 10 years or 20 years for the palate to get its

taste ability back. Court Lady Han takesJang-Geum to a second doctor who also gives them no

hope.Jang-Geum tells Court Lady Han to gives up on her. Court Lady Han tells Jang-Geum she

needs her.

On their way back they stop by to buy fresh fish in the market place. The fish merchant who isblind, recognizes Court Lady Han by her voice and picks out the freshest fish simply by touching.

Night and dayJang-Geum tastes as much food as she can think of to see if her taste buds haverecovered.Jang-Geum cries out aloud at her loss. Court Lady Han Sang Gong watches and

weeps as well. Court Lady Han remembers how the fish merchant picked out the freshest fish and

realizes something.

Court Lady Jung tells Court Lady Choi and Han to each pick out an assistant. Choi picks Geum-

Young and Han picks Jang-Geum


The senior kitchen maids are upset that the Court Ladies picked Jang-Geum and Geum-Young astheir assistants. Yeon-Saeng defends Jang-Geum.Jang-Geumbegs Court Lady Han to pick

someone else since she cant tastes the flavours. Court Lady Han tellsJang-Geum the reason she

cant pick anyone else is becauseJang-Geum has culinary talent and understanding of food thatneither Court Lady Han nor Choi nor Geum-Young has. She ordersJang-Geum to show up to

royal disheswhile Han is watching. Court Lady Han tellsJang-Geum not to taste her own food,

rather cook with confidence in her knowledge.

Court Lady Choi tells Geum-Young about the secret recipes that their family has acquired fromthe previous Head of Royal Kitchen. She wants Geum-Young to practice secretly.

Court Lady Choi walks in to the girls room while Yong Non (Ling Lo) and Chang-Ee (Yeol-I)are playing mahjong. Choi talks to Yong-Non privately. She gives Yong Non money and ask her

to move in withJang-Geum and Yon-Seng and spy on Jang-Geums every movement.

There is a crisis in the Royal Kitchen. All the jars of baen sauce have an off taste even though thesame salt and same water were used like before. Its a serious matter because when the taste of

bean paste is changed, it signifies a bad omen to the nation. Court Lady Jung tells Court Lady

Han and Choi to figure out what happened and find a way to solve the crisis. This will also betheir first competition.

Court Lady Choi takes Geum-Young to see her brother for help. She finds out from her brotherthat the salt was switched by Right Prime Minister Oh. Choi Pan Sul is worried by the news since

Court Lady Han is investigating the matter so he orders his men to hurry and get rid of the salt

that is in the store.

Court Lady Han bringsJang-Geum to town to trace the origin of all the materials that are

involved in the palace bean paste making. They run into Kang Deok Gu and Na Ju Daek as

theyre on their way to the palace to bring precious wine to Jang-Geum.Jang-Geum tells Duk

Gu about the bean sauce taste.

Geum-Young tells Court Lady Choi that she doesnt think salt is the reason why the tastechanged. Chan-Ee asks Court Lady Jung about the difference salt tastes when stored moist and

dry and this gives Court Lady Jung a clue.

Min Jung-Ho and his men are guarding the palace at night when they see a shadow running by.

Gang Deok Gu sneaks into the place where the bean pastes are kept inside the palace. Min Jung-

Ho and the guards find Deok Gu praying in front of the jars. Min orders Kangs capture. Min

orders Kang to confess his offense. Kang begs for Min to listen for his explanation. Kang says thename Jang-Geum which gets Mins attention. Min brings Kang to Court Lady Jung. Kang Duk

Gu states he was there to helpJang-Geum switch the taste back. Min lets Kang go. Min

apologizes to Kang about being harsh earlier and asks Kang ifJang-Geum is his daughter. Kangsays people comment how her inteligence reminds them of her fathers wit. Min states he sees no

resemblance.

Court Lady Han andJang-Geum arrive at a village where the villagers have gathered all the jars

of bean paste under one tree. They learn that the villagers believe the spot under the tree

cultivates the best taste in bean sauce.The villanger also tellsJang-Geum about a couple of other spots where the villagers recognize as

the best places to ferment the bean sauce. Court Lady Han andJang-Geum visit the house where

the villager told them about and they ask to taste the paste. The sauce really tastes better.

Head Court Lady Jae Jo Sang Gong scolds Jung Sang Gong for the bean paste incident and

worries about the meal next day. Court Lady Choi states she found a good sauce that they can use

for the time being. Right Prime Minister Oh informs the King of trouble of bush fires. Head

Court Lady wonders if its because of the bad taste in this years paste that causes it. The Kingsays that cant be true.

Court Lady Han andJang-Geum tell Court Lady Jung that they have found out why the taste is

different andJang-Geum is about to tell the Royal Kitchen Court Ladies the reason.


Jang-Geum figures out how to get the bean sauce back to the desired taste. Courty Lady Han

tellsJang-Geum to cook bean curd soup for the King. Head Court Lady asks the King if the soup

tastes different. The king says its the same as old times. The King asks how they got the taste

back. It was becauseJang-Geum found out that the secret is adding pollen. The king tells thegenerals to inform the citizens about the benefits of using flower pollen.

Jang-Geum asks Court Lady Han if she could go to the herbal farm to receive treatment from thepalace doctor there.

Court Lady Choi and Geum-Young are upset by Jang-Geums success.

Jang-Geum travels to the herbal farm to meet the Doctor Jung Woon Baek who is researching

treatment by using bees sting.Jang-Geumbegs the doctor to help cure her disability. Min Jung-Ho and his guards arrive. Min scolds the doctor about his treatment of his men who suffer from

bruised skin and weak limbs. Doctor states he is just trying new treamtment methods. Min

apologizes.Jang-Geumbegs Doctor Jung to use her as a guinea pig but he refuses. But hepromises to help her.

Jang-Geum and Min Jung-Ho walk back together. Min tellsJang-Geum a story of one who lost

his hearing but became a doctor to cheer her up. He said, if I tell you everything will be okaythen it would be obnoxious. If I say Im sorry then it sounds like theres no hope. Jang Geum

tells Min he already comforted her with those words and smiles.

Min gets more books for Jang-Geum. Geum-Young sees the interaction as she walks in the

direction of the library.Jang-Geum opens the book to read, and finds a proverb poem Min wrote

for her, which roughly means a small tree is not yet grown, thus just a single bamboo standing,the shadow of the trees is just temporarily stay, once its over, sunset gives a beautiful view

(Other translated meaning, to bring up a small tree in this world is already a hard work.. thelonelinss of a mature tree it is only temporary because when the sun comes up the world will

once again be filled with warmth).

Yong-Non spies onJang-Geum and shows Geum-Young the medical booksJang-Geum is

reading.

Court Lady Han tellsJang-Geum to make rice cake fry. Yong Non tells Geum-Young that Court

Choi approaching so she lies by saying yes and runs off. Courty Lady Choi asks medince lady

Lady Choi asks Yong-Ro privately since whenJang-Geum has been reading medical books.Choi remembers what the medicine lady told her and becomes suspicious about Jang-Geums

Court Lady Choi again asked Yun Saeng when Jang Geum started reading the medical books.Yun Saeng tells Choi that she started reading after the incident of the prince.

Court Lady Han and Court Lady Choi sample the dishes prepared by the Royal Kitchen maidservants. The maids taken turn to present their dishes to the two Sang-Goons.Jang-Geum

presents bamboo rice (rice steamed in bamboo trunks). Court Lady Choi then tells the maids to

taste each others food, as she wantsJang-Geum to show her inability to decipher taste. Themaids trade with each other. Court Lady Choi asks Yun Noh, then Yun-Saeng, then Geum-Young

to state aloud what they have tasted. Then she calls for Jang-Geum.Jang-Geum makes up a

response based on what she knows about the ingredients. Court Lady Choi lets her pass and calls

Chan-Ee next.

Court Lady Jung asks Court Lady Choi and Han about the preparation results. Court Lady Han

states she cant decide whether Geum-Young or Jang-Geums was the best. Court Lady Choi

states she thought Jang-Geums was the best but it seemsJang-Geum cant decipher tastesanymore, as the Yong Nons dish thatJang-Geum sampled was supposed to be extremely salty

butJang-Geum didnt taste that.

Court Lady Jung callsJang-Geum into her chamber.Jang-Geum is presented with 3 bowls fo

water each with a different condiment dissolved in. She tastes the first one and says its sugarwater. She tastes the second and states its salt water. Court Lady Jung states all the bowls were

plain water, as a trick test. Court Lady Han pleads to Court Lady Jung saying that although she

cant taste anything she has the skill and wisdom to cook great dishes. Court Lady Choi insists a

kitchen maid who can no longer decipher food taste does not belong to the kitchen. Court LadyHan saidJang-Geum can cook anything. Choi asks forJang-Geum to prove that she can really

cook anything. If Jang Geum really can, then she will let it go too but if she fails, then CourtLady Han must also take the blame.

Court Lady Jung scolds Court Lady Han for not telling her earlier. Jang-Geum tells Court Lady

Han she will try Court Lady Chois test. Court Lady Choi tells Geum-Young to stop copyingJang-Geum and stand on her own skills.

Jang-Geum travels to the herbal field farm to beg the Doctor Jung to test his new bees sting

treatment on her. He refuses since he is afraid something might go wrong.Jang-Geum tells its

calm her spirit, then uses the bees sting to poke her tongue. Whether or not the treatment worked

is uncertain as of yet. Doctor Jung givesJang-Geum medicine to eat if her body becomes toocold or painful.Jang-Geum asks if the medicine will counter the effects of the treatment, but

promises to take the medicine if there is side-effect.

Gang Duk Gu goes on an errand for the King. His wife follows him. HIs wife asks how muchmoney he will receive for this.

Jang-Geumbegins to feel her body swollen but she decides not to take the medicine for fear that

her treatment will be nullified.Jang-Geum goes to the kitchen to see if her taste palate has

returned. Court Lady Choi tellsJang-Geum her trial is today.

A court lady arrives with the materials to be delivered to Kang.Jang-Geum volunteers to make

the delivery. Kang Duk Gu cultivates honey, then uses it to make porridge for the King.Jang-

Geum is given pig liver to helps to recover her sense of taste. Jang-Geum sniffs it and says itsstrong.Jang-Geum asks Deok Gu if he knows what whale meat tastes like, which she needs to

cook in test. Duk Go goes on and on about how it tastes like seafood but not really, how itresembles beef but not really, but hes interrupted by head guard who tells him to go back to hiswork, before finally said it should be tastes like beef.

Jang-Geum runs off to the courtyard to read her mothers recipe booklet. Court Lady Choisbrother Choi Pan Sul gives her a recipe for cooking whale meat.

Court Lady Jung tells Court Lady Han, Choi,Jang-Geum and Geum-Young to cook side by side

the newly arrived whale meat. Each team cooks different dishes using the meat as mainingredient. Court Lady Jung tastes the creations before they are brought to the King. She

approves the dishes made by Court Lady Choi and Geum-Young. The she tastes Jang-Geums

dish a couple of times then says its okay to give to the King. Court Lady Choi protests


Court Lady Jung, Han and Choi deliver the whale dishes to the King. Jang-geum, left behind in

the kitchen, tastes her own food and realizes her sense of taste is back.

The king is presented with the creations of Court Lady Choi and Geum-Young and Court Lady

Han and Jang-Geum. The king praises food made byJang-Geum and praises the Royal Kitchenfor its skills.

Jang-Geum tells Court Lady Han that her sense of taste have returned due to treatment of theherbal field farm Doctor Jung, who used the poison of insects as the medicine for human.

Court Lady Choi is angry at Jang-Geums success and scolds Geum-Young who thinksJang-

Geum has talent unsurpassed by none.

Court Lady Jung gathers the kitchen maids to try whale meat so they know what it tastes like for

future reference. Court Lady Choi tells Jung Sang Gong that she admits she lost but states inpublic thatJang-Geum has lost her sense of taste, and a kitchen maid has to know how to taste

food so that she can teach the younger maids in the future. Jung states that Jang-Geum can just

focus on making great dishes. Choi insists a Royal Kitchen maid must have her sense of taste

intact. Court Lady Jung stops Choi from going on and on and orders all kitchen maids to gather in

the kitchen storage yard for food-tasting. Privately, Court Lady Han tells Jung about Jang-

Geums sense of taste palate returning. Jung tells Han to be careful and pretend that she doesntknow about it in front of Choi Sang Gong.

Jang-Geum is put to test in front of everyone.Jang-Geum correctly states the ingredients in a

food jar by tasting the samples.Jang-Geum amazes her fellow maids by her skills. Court LadyChoi looks confused. FinallyJang-Geum and Court Lady Han tell everyoneJang-Geum has

recovered her sense of taste buds. Court Lady Jung tells everyone that Jang-Geums recovery is ahappy event for all kitchen maids and everyone must learn a lesson in this. Court Lady Choi is

really pissed off. Yong-Noh tells Geum-Young that Choi embarassed herself today.

Yun-Saeng, Chan-Ee, Court Lady Jung, and Court Lady Han prepare food and wait for Jang-

Ggeum to celebrate together.

Jang-Geum runs off to the herbal field farm to inform the Doctor Jung about her recovery. Jungasks if his treatment really worked and teasesJang-Geum why she came empty-handed.Jang-

Geum apologizes and runs off to get him food and wine.

Jang-Geum asks Yun-Saeng what she should give to the person she is grateful toward (Min Jung

Ho). Yun-Saeng replies that Court Lady Jung said one can show gratefulness with food cooked

with love.Jang-Geum goes to the kitchen and prepares treats for Min Jung-Ho. Geum-Youngwalks in asJang-Geum is about to wrap up all the food she made.Jang-Geum says its for

someone who has done her favours. Geum-Young says it must be nice to have someone who

looks after you in the palace. Geum-Young tellsJang-Geum she is disappointed thatJang-

Geum got her sense of taste back since theyre rivals, and leaves.

Min Jung Ho tellsJang-Geum about a medicine man she might want to see for treatment.Jang-

Geum tells him about her recovery, returns the books she borrowed and hands him food she made

for him as a token of her grateful attitude. Min Jung-Ho goes back and begins to enjoy the foodwhen a subordinate tells him someone has come to see him. Geum-Young came by with a gift

she brought from her uncle Choi Pan Sul (theyve known each other for a long time due to theirfamilies). Min asks her how shes doing and Geum-Young tells him lately she has lost confidence

in herself and finds life difficult. Min encourages Geum-Young to have confidence since her job

brings happiness to people.

The King suggests that Court Lady Choi and Court Lady Han compete by cooking for the

princes birthday, with the menu to be determined by the queen. Court Lady Choi asks Head

Court Lady Madam Qi Jyu to help her become the next head of the Royal Kitchen, in return Choipromises it would benefit Head Court Lady as well.

Court Lady Choi asks her brother Choi Pan Sul to find her the best ingredients for the next cook-off.

The royal family wants them to make dishes using food that the citizens throw away. Geum-Young wanders around the town to see what kind of food the citizens throw away. Jang Geum

and Madam Han go to see Kang Duk Gu, but he is not around. His wife Na Joo Daek suggestsJang-Geum to use the use wine rice from wine-making as the ingredient. Geum-Young brings

the throw-away fish gill from the market to Court Lady Choi to make prawn sauce.Jang-Geum

and Lady Han decide they will use the left-over plums to make mince sour vegetables. Jang-Geum goes around town to look for fresh meat. They require to make a cow bone soup and rice

too.

Jang-Geum tells Madam Han she thinks the ingredients that come from their regular source may

not be as fresh as the ingredients that Madam Choi might use. Court Lady Han states that it is out

of their control, butJang-Geum wants to buy the best ingredients to make the soup anyway, thedelay the time to best prepare the soup. The queen is presented with food prepared by the two

teams. each team has cooked a simple meal that resembles what the citizens normally eat. Thequeen tastes the food and learns about the recipe, then announces the one cooked by Court Lady

Chois soup is the better one. The head guard asks the queen why, and Court Lady Han states she

knows why she lost.


Hang-Geum and Court Lady Han lost in the competition in front of the Queen. Court Lady Han

believes it is becauseJang-Geum took too long to get the cow shoulder meat for the broth thus

there wasnt enough time for the soup to develop its rich flavor. Court Lady Choi and Geum-Young are elated they won and regains confidence in their skills. Court Lady Han scoldsJang-GeumbecauseJang-Geum focused only on winning against Geum-Young, instead of making

good food.

A ranked supervisor, Jo Sang Gong, who is receiving treatment outside of the palace needs

someone from the Royal Kitchen for a limited duration and Court Lady Han tellsJang-Geum togo there.Jang-Geumbegs to allow her to stay since the competition in the palace with Courty

Lady Choi isnt over yet but Han tells her to leave. Courty Lady Jung finds out about it and asks

Court Lady Han if its too harsh of a punishment but Han Sang Gong insists on her decision.

Jang-Geumpacks to leave. On her way, she stops by Han Sang Gongs room and apologizes to

Han outside her room.Jang-Geum goes to see Kang Duk Gu.Jang-Geum tells his wife abouther mistake which caused Court Lady Han to lose. They are surprised at Court Lady Hans harshdecision.

Geum-Young goes to the kitchen with a joyful sigh and prepares food for Min Jung-Ho. Geum-Young goes to the investigation court to deliver the food but shes told Min Jun Ho has left for an

assignment. Geum-Young gets permission from Court Lady Choi to go outside of the palace for a

trip.

The kitchen maids wonder who Court Lady Han will pick as her new assistant. Young-Noh goes

to Court Lady Han and asks her to pick her. Court Lady Han tells Young-Noh to fetch water,

again and again, like the way she askedJang-Geum whenJang-Geum was a child. Chan-Eegoes to see Court Lady Han and asks her to pick her too. Court Lady Han asks her to bring back

100 different kinds of herbs in 4 days, just like the way she asked Jang-Geum. Yun-Saeng also

goes to see Court Lady Han and states she can take Jang-Geums place in Jang-Geums absence.Court Lady Han tells her to draw out the ingredients and making of three fruits sauce (triple

paste). The three girls complain about Courty Lady Hans harsh requests. Geum-Young tells

themJang-Geum did all three when she was a child. Han Sang-Gong arrives and the girls statethey cant fulfil the tasks. She tells them this is whyJang-Geum is irreplaceable.

The girls ask why Court Lady Han sentJang-Geum away. Court Lady Han remembers the days

of young Jang-Geum.

Jang-Geum arrives at the new appointment. Kang Deok Gu is there too. He tellsJang-Geum that

Jo Sang-Gong became ill after she realized her brother had died. The ill Sang-Goong is dying and

before she dies she wishes to eat the kind of rice that she ate with her brother when they were

young. No one knows what kind of rice she is talking about so Court Lady Jo remains sad in bed.

Min Jung-Ho who is on his way back to the palace comes acrossJang-Geum who seems sad. Heis about to approach her but is interrupted by Gang Duk Gu who asks why Min didnt get him

any wines (Gang asked him earlier when he saw that Min was going to Oo-Ham city). Later,Jang-Geum walks by a temple and sees a man paying his respects (Min Jung-Ho).

Court Lady Choi reports to Jae-Jo-Sang Gong that Court Lady Jung and Han havent been

speaking to each other. The two agree that they should make sure nothing goes wrong in their

plan of making Choi the next Royal Kitchen leader.

Deok Gu showsJang-Geum the beach. Seeing the beauty of the sea beach and the shore,Jang-

Geumbecomes happy again as she runs on water. Jang-Geum, who is playing in the water, runs.Then runs into Min Jung-Ho and the two play together.

Jang-Geum tells Jung-Ho this was her first time on the beach. Jung-Ho andJang-Geum chat,thenJang-Geum remembers her mother and gets teary. Jung-Ho asks how she became an

orphan.Jang-Geum says it was her fault that her parents died.Jang-Geum says her father was a

palace Royal Guard too.Jang-Geum tells Jung-Ho if she had kept her mouth quiet her father

would have been alive today. Same goes for her mother. Jung-Ho is sadden by her story.Jang-

Geum apologizes for embarassing herself in front of him. He says he should be the one to

apologize.

Jang-Geum gets the prescription for the ill sang-goong. Jung-Ho asks ifJang-Geum is goingtoward the medicine house and says hes going toward that direction as well. Jung-Ho showsJang-Geum where the medicine house is and tells her to meet again in 1 hour. Their trails arebeing followed by unknown identities. Jung-Ho andJang-Geum are attacked by the men who

followed them. Jung-Ho fights with them, then takesJang-Geum and run. The two hide while

the attackers search for them. The attackers find Deok Gu and the doctor, and ask if theyve seena woman with a man. Deok Gu is about to say something but another man from the medical court

comes to send the men away by stating no woman was there.

Jang-Geum tastes a new flavor and begs the medicine guard to teach her how to make thatflavor. The man doesnt see why its so important and declines.Jang-Geumpersists until the

man finally gives in. Jung-Ho sees Jang-Geums enthusiasm and smiles.

Court Lady Han tells Court Lady Jung she will go through the competition by herself.

Jang-Geum figures out what kind of rice Jo Sang Gong is wishing for and gets it for her. Upontasting the rice flavor that she enjoyed with her brother when she was young, Jo Sang Gong

begins to weep as she remembers her childhood happiness.

Jang-Geum tells Jung-Ho she learned some important lessons through her failure. She learned

that she will fail if she only focuses on winning and getting results, instead of putting her enery

into the food and focus on the one who will eat it. Min tellsJang-Geum he believes that even if

she makes a mistake once, she is a person who will bring smiles to the faces of those who tasteher food.

Geum-Young sees the two together as she walks in their direction.


Jang-Geum tells Jung-Ho how she resented her mentor at first but now she understands why she

treated her so harsh for her mistake. Geum-Young walks in the courtyard and sees Jang-Geum

talking to Jung-Ho. Gang Deuk Gu comes wth the paper and pen brush thatJang-Geum left

behind. Gang drags Jung-Ho to go drink with him. Geum-Young looks atJang-Geum with hate

and leaves. Geum-Young weeps alone in her room, remembering her love toward Jung-Ho.

Next day, Geum-Young goes to the market and sees Jung-Ho looking for a thin brush to

purchase. Geum-Young remembers Jung-Ho askingJang-Geum if she still uses thick pen brush

when she arrived the day before and realizes hes buying it forJang-Geum and leaves. Geum-Young walks off her sadness by the river.

Jung-Ho findsJang-Geum who is busy chasing after the medicine guard getting recipes fromhim. Jung-Ho gives the small pen brush toJang-Geum saying its something he had but its too

small for him so she should have it.Jang-Geum accepts with thanks and goes back to her recipe-

gathering.

The queen has set the last competition. This time she wants the teams to cook mountain-side

fresh seafood. Its a difficult task because its hard to get fresh seafood at this time of the year.Court Lady Choi knows she can get the ingredient from Choi Pan Sul so tells Geum-Young the

Jang-Geum watches as the ill Jo Sang Gong passes away.

Jang-Geum gets ready to go back to the Royal Kitchen. Tthe medicine guard stops her to tell herto add dried anchovy, dried shiitake, mixed with salt and powdered stem vegetable to soybean

stew next time for rich flavor.

Jang-Geum, Jung-Ho and Duk Gu leave together. Jung-Ho asksJang-Geum if shes sad about Jo

Sang Gong and she says yes. He says he too feels sad. Duk Gu states hes sad too because now he

has to go back home to do all kinds of chores for his wife.

Court Lady Choi and Geum-Young watch as Choi Pan Sul orders his men to gather the preciousingredients. Court Lady Han goes to the market in town and looks around, not finding the

ingredients she wants.

A captured offender has fled and may be hiding in the Royal Kitchen. Young-Noh and Yun-

Saeng run into palace guards as they walk outside their room at night. The internal investigationcourt official informs Court Lady Jung that theyre looking for a fugitive who might be in the

Royal Kitchens rooms hiding. The official finds the offender in Court Lady Chois room; the

offender says hes innocent but hes taken away and the guards leave.

Court Lady Jung tells the maids to clean up the room before Court Lady Choi comes back. The

girls giggle over all the accessories that Choi has. Jung finds the recipe book that should have

been given to the Royal Kitchen head (herself) in then room and becomes angry at Court LadyHead Jae-Jo Sang Gong and Choi Sang Gong.

Investigation official informs Min Jung-Ho about the captured offender. Min reports about his

findings from his trip.

Jang-Geum returns to the Royal Kitchen. Yun-Saeng tellsJang-Geum whats been going on inthe kitchen. Court Lady Han returns from her shopping trip and sees Jang-Geum. Her cold

response makes Yun-Saeng wonder if Han is still angry at Jang-Geum.

Court Lady Choi and Geum-Young return from their trip as well. Young-Noh asks Choi if she

has found the ingredients. Choi tells her to go back to work.

Jang-Geum sends a smile to Geum-Young but Geum-Young avoids eye contact with Jang-Geum.

Court Lady Choi asks Court Lady Han if she found the desired ingredients. Han replies no.

Jang-Geum tells Geum-Young that shes worried that Han may never forgive her. Geum-Young

says toJang-Geum even if Han Sang Gong doesnt forgive her,Jang-Geum already has toomany things in life. Geum-Young states silently that whatJang-Geum has is what she wished to

cherish for life.

Court Lady Choi realizes the recipe book is gone and asks around about what happened in her

room and finds out Court Lady Jung was in her room when all the books fell out of the closet

after they captured the fugitive.

Court Lady Jung pretends like she doesnt know anything about Choi and recipe book. Choi goesto see Court Lady Head about her concern that Jung knows about the recipe book but is waiting

until the competition day to tell everyone about it.

Jang-Geumpractices cooking with the recipes she learned while she was away. Yun-Saeng and

Jang-Geumpeek at the ingredients Court Lady Han brought from the market and realizes its not

fresh.Jang-Geum gets all worried and runs to see the Kang Deuk Gu to see if they know how tofind fresh seafood in the winter.

Kang finds out from the guards what Jung-Ho likes and presents a fortune to Jung-Ho so that he

can ask him for favors. Jung-Ho tells him to take it back and never bring anything to him. DukGu goes to dig for some root that is supposed to bring good fortune in the workplace to whoever

eats it. Jung-Ho tells him to get rid of it again. Duk Gu cries out his troubles that he wants Min to

get wine for him.Jang-Geum arrives and Jung-Ho softens up to Duk Gu by offering to buy thewine at his house. Min leaves. Duk Gu asks where Mins house is butJang-Geum drags him

away.

Court Lady Han givesJang-Geum a special plum to taste. Han tellsJang-Geum its benefits

health. Han showsJang-Geum shes been forgiven.Jang-Geum tells Han that she is just like her

deceased mother.

upcoming competition andJang-Geum is cheerful like before. Choi Pan Sool tells Geum-Young

the bad news that his men werent able to get live seafood. Geum-Young tells the uncle that Jungknows about the recipe book Jae-Jo Sang Gong passed to Choi Sang Gong without Jungs

knowing. Head Court Lady Jae-Jo Sang Gong and Choi plan a scheme for a way to prevent Jung

from appearing at the competition tomorrow for fear that she will tell everyone about the recipebook.

An infectious virus has struck the palace and Right Prime Minister Oh orders the sick palaceworkers to vacant their dorms. Jae-Jo Sang Goon and Court Lady Choi use this opportunity to get

rid of Court Lady Jung. Jung gets escorted away by Chois man who tells Jung that everyone

must leave for preventive cause. Meanwhile, Jae-Jo Sang Gong tells the queen that Jung has beenstruck by the illness and thus escorted out of the Royal Palace overnight.

Head Court Lady calls Court Lady Han andJang-Geum to her chambers and in front of Court

Lady Choi and Geum-Young, Jae-Jo Sang Gong states Court Jung has the disease that can bespread through food. Yun-Saeng tells Han Sang Gong its strange that Jung has the disease since

she didnt show any signs like fever and vomit like other people with the disease have.


Yun-Saeng tells Court Lady Han that Court Lady Jung didnt display any signs of the disease like

Court Lady Min had. Court Lady Min asks Court Lady Jung why she came to the temporary

housing if shes not sick by the disease. Jung, who is seemingly healthy, states thats what shewonders too.

The healthy palace workers try to determine the cause of the virus or disease. Court Lady Han-sgtells the kitchen maids to get rid of all the cooked food and start over. Geum-Young suggests to

Court Lady Choi to hire a food doctor.

Jae-Jo Sang Gong pushes Right Prime Minister Oh to name the new Royal Kitchen leader sinceCourt Lady Jung is gone. The head guard insists they should wait till Jung returns first. Head

Court Lady names Choi the interim Royal Kitchen head. Court Lady Choi gathers the kitchen

maids and orders Court Lady Han andJang-Geum to go to Peace Hall, where foreign guests arewelcomed. Court Lady Han andJang-Geum leave for Peace Hall. Yun-Saeng begs to take her

with them. Choi tells Yun-Saeng theyre not going for fun but Yun-Saeng worries that theyll

never return. Court Lady Choi tells her to stay and not worry.

Min Jung Ho carries out the order to filter away anyone who has symptoms of illness.Kang Deok

Gu and his wife arrive. They exchange greetings with Min. Then Court Lady Han andJang-

Geum arrive. Han asks Deok Gu if he could go see Court Lady Jung to check if shes really illwith the disease and the severity of her illness. Deok Gu tries to get out of it since he doesnt

want to go where all the sick ppl are kept but his wife says he can do it if Han pays her.

Min seesJang-Geum and while Han steps away to talk with the Deuk Gu. Min asksJang-Geum

where shes going.Jang-Geum tells Min Jung-Ho shes been transferred to Peace Hall for the

time being. Min says she has a difficult task and shows empathy for her. Geum-Young walks byas she goes to gather cooking materials. Geum-Young is upset byJang-Geum talking to Min

again.

Later, Min runs into Geum-Young. Min asks Geum-Young for status on Royal Kitchen but

Geum-Young says its rude to ask about business only during such time of crisis and shows shes

angry that Min doesnt care about her well-being. Min apologizes but Geum-Young walks away.

Right Prime Minister Oh tells Choi Pan Sul that he didnt expect the Jungs matter to be resolved

so easily. Then Oh tells Choi Pan Sul that he may have to go Jeju-Island. Choi Pan Sul states he

was planning on going there anyway to work on new money-making deals. Oh shows hissatisfaction in Choi Pan Suls quick thinking.

Duk Gus wife forces Duk Gu to visit Court Lady Jung. Jung tells him to go inside her room to

talk. Duk Gu says hell stay outside but Jung insists on him going inside. Duk Gu asks the nurse

for a mask and goes inside. Duk Gu informs Jung the news of Han andJang-Geum transferred toGrand Peace Hall. Jung gives a letter to Duk Gu for Han. After Duk Gu leaves Jung looks at the

cook recipe book she took from Court Lady Chois closet.

Court Lady Han receives the letter and tellsJang-Geum that Jung is not disease-stricken but shewants Han andJang-Geum to continue following orders as if nothings going on.

Oh is entertaining the visiting general from Ming Dynasty in the Grand Peace House. Han cooksup a light greaseless healthy food for the ambassador who is tired from traveling. The

ambassador and Right Prime Minister Oh is offended by the simple food and refuses to eat. han-

sg states during this disease time and after a tiring trip its not good to eat greasy food. Theambassador is unimpressed and Oh gets his men to take Han away. Jang-Geum comes in to beg

the Ming general to try the food and states Court Lady Han prepared the food with his health in

mind. Right Prime Minister Oh gets angry that a mere maid is telling the ranked officers what to

do. The Ming general asksJang-Geum if she will guarantee the beneficial results with her life.Jang-Geum indicates yes. The Ming general tellsJang-Geum hell try the food for 5 days like

what she asked for, and ask Jang Geum to prepare the meals herself.

That night,Jang-Geum remembers her mothers last words pleading her to find a way to surviveeven without the guidance of her father and mother.

Next dayJang-Geum starts cooking for the Ming Dynasty general and she presents 5 meals to

the general one at a time. The general tries everything but says nothing and doesnt show any

sign of content in the food.

Court Lady Choi finds out what happened to Court Lady Han and come to Peace House to take

over the cooking duties herself. Choi and Geum-Young come to the kitchen to tellJang-Geum to

leave butJang-Geum tells Choi to leave instead, saying she will be responsible for the next 5days of meals. Choi is offended that a maid is ordering her around but Geum-Young persuades

Choi to leave.

Court Lady Choi tells Oh not to worry about the Ming general because she will cook up the

Manchu-Han Full Feast served in the Royal Palace of the Chinese Emperor.

After the Ming general eats all 5 days of mealsJang-Geumprepared for him, he is then

presented with the grand meal that Choi prepared. The general shows signs of content eating the

feast. Oh asks the general what should the verdict onJang-Geumbe.

Right Prime Minister Oh tells the visiting Ming general to enjoy the feast of Manchu-Han Full

Feast and do what he wishes to the maid Jang-Geum. The visiting general asks Jang-Geum whyshe was so insistant on cooking only greaseless food, even at the risk of her life.Jang-Geum

states she was following the golden rule set by her mentor Court Lady Han, which is no matter

what, a cook must never prepare food that will harm the one who will eat the food. Visiting

general states at first he was reluctant to try the simple foodJang-Geumprepared but the morehe at the better he felt. Visiting general thanksJang-Geum and states he will from now on leave

his appetite in her hands. Court Lady Choi, Geum-Young, and Oh are unhappy at the situation.

Court Lady Han is freed. The head guard says her golden rule of cooking saved her. Han tells the

guard that Court Lady Jung does not suffer from any contagious disease. The guard states

sometimes it takes a while for the symptoms to show but if she really is not disease-stricken thenit will soon be revealed.

Court Lady Choi goes to see Han and cynically states she worried about visiting generals from

china in the past but from now on she will leave it up to Han. Choi tells Head Court Lady all iswell at visitors corridors, but Choi does not tell her that the general preferred Jang-Geums food

over the feast.

Yun-Saeng trains the newly arrived child maids to bow and orders the older children to pair up

with a younger children. Young-Noh interrupts and tries to take away 2 children to be her

students. Choi arrives and stops Young-Noh and Yun-Saeng from arguing. Choi puts Young-Nohin charge of training responsibility of young maids. Yun-Saeng goes to complain to Chan-Ee

about Choi and asks if Court Lady Jung will return soon. Chan-Ee wonders if they need to be

nice to Young-Noh from now on since Choi is in charge and she looks favorably upon Young-Noh.

Head Court Lady Jae-Jo Sang Gong and Choi report to the queen and Head Court Lady tells thequeen that Choi took care of everything. The queen praises them for doing a good job with thematter of Peace Hall. Head Court Lady is about to bring up the issue of promoting Choi again

when theyre interrupted by a visitor. Lady Ja-Soon arrives to thank the queen for helping her

with the matter of her servant Court Lady Jo who has just passed away.Lady asks what theyre discussing. The queen dismissed Choi and Head Court Lady. The queen

tells the lady she was just praising Choi. The lady tells the queen she heard some strange rumors.

Court Lady Jung receives medical exam from the doctor brought by Gam Tuk-Poh (Kang Deuk

Gu). The doctor says she shouldnt have been kept together with those who suffer from the

disease. Tuk-Poh visits Han to tell her Jung is weaker than ever before.

A messenger arrives at Peace Hall and asks for the maid who took care of the dying Jo. The head

guard bringsJang-Geum to Lady Ja-Soon who sent for Jang-Geum.Jang-Geum reports to Lady

Ja-Soon about the last days of Jo. Lady Ja-Soon states Jo was like a mother to her and regrets shewas not the one who took care of her in her dying bed. The head guard tells lady thatJang-Geum

is a detailed and sensible person so the lady needs not to worry forJang-Geum most certainly

offered the best care available to Jo. Lady Ja-Soon feels comforted and asks whyJang-Geum isworking in Peace Hall.

Jung sends Court Lady Min on a errand to find out what it is that the medical staff has been given

her as medication. Jae-Jo Sang Gong tells the head guard they probably shouldnt let Jung back in

the Royal Kitchen since she is so ill and they should hurry and make a new kitchen head. Headguard states thats not an urgent matter.

Court Lady Min finds out the medicine Jung has been taking contains harmful liquids that are

slowly poisioning her body. Jung writes a letter to Jae-Jo Sang Gong asking for a meeting. Jae-JoSang Gong reluctantly visits Jung Sang Gong. Jung asks Jae Jo Sang Gong to allow her to return

to palace kitchen with the rest of the people who are scheduled to return to the palace in 2 days.Head Court Lady states thats not a good idea since Jung is so sick and too weak to cook. Jung

confronts her by telling her that she knows about the medicine Head Court Lady has ordered for

her, and about the recipe book that was supposed to be given to her but passed onto Choi SangGong. Jung asks if Head Court Lady wants her to send the poisioning medicine and the book to

the investigating court. Head Court Lady denies everything but shows sign of being threatened.

The queen calls Jae-Jo Sang Gong and Choi into her chamber and in front of Lady Ja-Soon, thequeen scolds the two Sang Gongs for not telling her about what Han Sang Gong andJang-Geum

did in Peace Hall and asks aboutJungs illness.

General Oh sends off the visiting general who is content from his stay and offers a good

friendship with his nation of Ming (China). The head guard asks Han Sang Gong if she will bereturning to kitchen since she did a good deed for the nation. Jung returns to the Royal Kitchen.

Han is rejoyed with tears.

The queen orders everyone to be present for a meeting. The queen tells Jung as far as she isconsidered Han won the second competition since she presented beneficial food to the visiting

general and thus giving him a great impression of the Korean dynasty.

Jung meets with Choi and Han, Geum-Young and Jang-Geum. Jung brings out the revered recipebook and states since Choi already saw it, its only fair that Han sees the content as well. Han

declines saying she will only read it if she becomes the next kitchen head.

Gam husband and wife arrive outside the village where Min Jung Ho is staying to deliver wines.

Min Jung-Ho meets with his informants who tell him that the suspects theyre after may behiding in the local bar and inn. Min comes outside to meet with Gams. Min Jung Ho asks Tuk-

Poh to take him to the bar and inn Tuk-Poh frequents.

Min gathers information about the inns guests from the hostess. The hostess says she cant give

out information about the guests and their conversations for no reason and leaves. Tuk-Poh tellsMin he knows how to do business with the bar hostesses so he should leave it up to him but for a

price. Min offers a thousand Yang (monetary unit) to Tuk-Poh for his assistance.

The queen gathers Jae-Jo Sang Gong, Jung, Choi, and Han into her chamber to announce that the

theme for the final competition between Han and Choi is nothing. Meaning the queen just wants

the two Sang Gongs to prepare their best dishes for the upcoming birthday feast.

Chan-Ee tells the kitchen maids why the queen met with the Court Ladies.

Right Prime Minister Oh meets with Head Court Lady. Oh tells Jae-Jo Sang Gong theres no

shortcuts anymore. From now on it depends on Court Lady Chois skills. Jung tells Han she has

done what she could and whatever happens will be a fate destined by the heaven, so Han should

try to cook with a peaceful heart.

Han Sang Gong meets with Jang-Geum, who sees that Han is shaking. Jang-Geum tells Han she

looks cute when shes shaking nervously. Han scolds her lovingly.Jang-Geum tells Han she

believes in Han skills. Han begins to tellJang-Geum about her past, of being born into a humblefamily, of meeting another child who gave Han her first praise for her cooking skills, of

following that child into the palace to become a kitchen maid. Afterwards, Han goes outside andcalls out her friends name, Myung-Ee (Jang Geums mothers name).

Meanwhile,Jang-Geum goes to read her mothers booklet and learns about a secret ingredientthat requires juice from the tree.

Court Lady Han digs out a small jar buried under the soil of a secret spot as she remembers her

friend Myung-Ee who buried the jar with her. As she leaves she remembers Myung-Ee telling herthat the best food for the king should be eight fruit soup.


Jang-Geum runs to the place where her mother said she buried the jar with her fellow-maid.Jang-Geum sees that the soil was recently touched so she wonders if her mothers friend was

there, but Han already left the area. Later Han Sang Gong tells Jang-Geum she plans to make

eight-fruit-soup for the feast competition.

Choi Sang Gong and Geum-Young go to see the Choi Pan Sul. Choi tells Pan Sul she has

confidence theyll win.Pan Sul meets with a palace messenger whom hes bribed to be on his side at the town inn to

discuss a new scheme. The hostess listens as they talk. The messenger goes to see Young-Noh

and whispers something in her ears.

Young-Noh and Yun-Saeng try to find out from each other what Choi and Han are cooking. They

exchange the paper with the dish name they guessed, but Young-Noh got a blank paper from

Yun-Saeng while Yun-Saeng got a fake dish name from Young-Noh. They argue again. Young-Noh tries to get Chan-Ees help. Chan-Ee tells Young-Noh she should go find out from Yun-

Saeng while shes sleep-talking. Young-Noh goes into Yun-Saengs room at night and tries to ask

her in her sleep but Yun-Saeng starts to blabber about all the food shes craving for. Young-Nohgets ticked and stuffs a green onion in her mouth.

Mrs. Gam tells her husband to deliver a precious wine to Court Lady Han. The wine is a specialwine that only Mrs. Gam knows how to make. She wants Han to present the wine to the King

during the feast so that everyone will know about her special wine thus helping their business.Gam Tuk-Poh delivers the wine toJang-Geum and gives her instruction on what to do with the

wine.

Choi and Geum-Young prepare the ingredients for next days cook-off. Han andJang-Geum

prepare their kitchen as well.

At night, Choi Pan Suls messenger meets with Young-Noh to give her some intructions.

Yun-Saeng runs into Jang-Geums room to tell her that Young-Noh did something to their

ingredients. Yun-Saeng, Jang-Geum, and Han Sang Goon run to the kitchen to discover that all

the ingredients have been ruined and messed with. Han instructsJang-Geum to hold the fortdown in the morning while she goes out to get more ingredients. Young-Noh watches and reports

to the messenger. Han leaves the palace at night to see the market merchant and Gam Tuk-Poh.

The merchant says her requested fresh ingredient will be in the market by daylight. Tuk-Poh sayshe doesnt have any more of the fermented herb she got from him yesterday. Tuk-Poh takes Han

around town to look for more but one by one all the shops say theyre out.

At daylight Court Lady Han gets what she needs and Tuk-Poh sends her off in a boat. He turns

around to tell her she forgot to pay him, but he sees that Han is getting kidnapped by 2 men on

the boat. Tuk-Poh runs home to tell his wife who tells him they should report to Min Jung-Ho toask for his help in getting the police involved.

Min learns about the fate of Han from Gam and goes off with his assistant on horse to look for

Han trails.

Back at the palace, Yun-Saeng worries about Han not yet returning while Jang-Geum tries to

stay calm. Young-Noh continues to spy on them.

Yun-Saeng tellsJang-Geum that Head Court Lady and everyone else have gathered for the

competition. Young-Noh goes after Court Lady Choi and whispers somethng in her ears. Choi is

surprised about what happened to Han. Young-Noh tells Choi Sang Gong that Choi Pan Sul willkeep Han Sang Gong from attending the cooking competition. Choi is not happy by her brothers

gesture which shows he doesnt trust her skills.

Head Court Lady calls for a meeting, and asks why Han is absent. Jang-Geum informs them Hanis outside the palace getting the ingredients she needs. Jung asks what happened to the

ingredients she already prepared.Jang-Geum states animals came in over the night and ruined

the ingredients. Head Court Lady says its a cooks reponsibility to protect their ingredients. Tofail in doing so is Hans failure.Jang-Geum says its her fault and asks if she could take Han

place till she comes back. Jae-Jo Sang Gong relunctantly agrees after Geum-Youngs persuasion.

Jung tellsJang-Geum it was not her place to meddle in.

Choi scolds Geum-Young for meddling in. Geum-Young thinks to herself that she wishes to seeJang-Geum suffering the way she made her suffer.

Outside the palace door Mrs. Gam runs into the blind merchant who asks her to deliver the fresh

seafood to Han Sang Gong. The seafood is delivered toJang-Geum andJang-Geum is notified

that Han was kidnapped on her way back to the palace.

Min Sang Gong gives shiitake mushrooms toJang-Geum to encourage her. Chan-ee also givesJang-Geumbeef ribe meat she stole from the Royal Kitchen.

Jang-Geum looks at Yun-Saeng seriously and tells her she is the only one who can help her at

this moment. Yun-Saeng says shes shaking nervously but pulls herself together to helpJang-

Geum fetch what she needs.

At the Kings mother birthday feast, the Royal family and the ranking generals have gathered.Jang-Geum and Geum-Young present their first course to the Queen and the King. The Queen

prepared the vermicelli wrap. Next the Royal family enjoys Chois spring rolls made from

seafood wrap. The king, the queen and the lady express their delight at Chois food.

Yun-Saeng is worried thatJang-Geum is losing.Jang-Geum silently asks for her mother to helpher. The next course is a salad. The Royal family is once again impressed by Choi innovation of

using bean water as the dressing.Jang-Geum again asks her mother to help her. The royal family

tastes her veggi dip made from garlic and aged vinegar preserved underground for decades. Theking states both are excellent butJang-Geum wins this round.

The mother Queen asks why Han is missing. Jae-Jo Sang Gong states Court Lady Han left the

palace and is yet to return. Everyone is startled by that news.

Jewel in the Palace - Episode 21The mother Queen is wondering why Court Lady Han is missing and a maid is been presenting

food instead. Head Court Lady tells the queen Han hasnt returned since she left yesterday. CourtLady Jung states Han had to leave to get fresh ingredients. The king asks who then has been

preparing the food theyre eating. Sang Gong say Hans maidJang-Geum is the cook.

The Kings mother Queen says theres no need to continue with the competition in that case. The

Queen and the King ask the mother Queen to allowJang-Geum to continue. The Kings mother

Queen agrees.

NextJang-Geumpresents tendered rib. Choi presents triple-cooked shrimp. Court Lady Min, the

other kitchen maids, the child maids, and Choi Pan Sul with his messenger watch.

Court Lady Han escapes while Min Jung Ho and his soldiers arrive. The soldiers escort Han back

to the palace while Min investigates.

Jang-Geumprepares the main course. Yun-Saeng expresses her concern at their lack of

ingredients to make the eight fruit soup that Court Lady Han wanted. Jang-Geum tells Yun-

Saeng to give her space alone and takes out her mothers recipe book for strength.

Court Lady Choi andJang-Geumpresent their course. Choi presents a stew of soft-pork meat

combined with ginseng.Jang-Geumpresents her dish and the royal family seems disappointed atthe sight of the chicken soup. But the mother Queen shows interest after a bite and asks what she

used.Jang-Geum states cabbage, garlic, chicken, etc. The king interrupts and wants to knowwhat is the ingredient that gives the dish such aromatic spicy flavor.Jang-Geum replies the

secret ingredient is tiger liver.
