One “Messiah” for all peoples

From its roots in Hebrew and Israelite times, the call of God’s Anointed is intended for all nations of the world:

The angel to Abraham: “Through your (one) offspring all nations on earth will be blessed.” [Genesis 22:18]

“The genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham.” [Matthew 1:1]

“Simon has described to us how God at first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.” [Acts 15:14]

Our source – the Bible

Alone among “sacred” writings, the Bible speaks of past and present, but also prophesies of the future:

• For individual men and women

Its prophets bore the message from God – “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” [2 Peter 1:21]

Not just an academic study, but a purpose which will be carried out, in which we can have a part – if we choose.

• For the world and its nations and peoples

The future of the world

“The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed... But it will itself endure for ever.” [Daniel 2:44]

“He (God) has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” [Acts 17:31]

“The Lord will be king over the whole earth.” [Zechariah 14:9]

The future of individuals

“For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day” [John 6:39]

“With your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” [Revelation 5:9,10]

“If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken.” [Deuteronomy 18:22]

The Reliability of the Bible

It demonstrates the God of the Bible as having a purpose and the power to carry it out.

“Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.” [Amos 3:7]

Page 25: Jesus, the Messiah Bible quotations are from the New International Version (NIV), except where they are from the Revised Standard Version, where they

The Purpose of “Anointing”

Ceremonial (with sacred oil) identifying those chosen by God for his work.

Those anointed were:

Prophets, e.g., Elisha [1 Kings 19:16]

Priests, e.g. Aaron [Exodus 28:41]

Kings, e.g., Jehu [2 Kings 9:6]

The Anointed, Jesus Christ, would fill all these roles.

(2) Priest – to make atonement for sins

“For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” [Romans 5:10,11]

Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.’ [Luke 21:27]
