Years ago I read an article in Time or Newsweek entitled something like What- ever Happened to Guilt? This secular arti- cle advocated for the need for guilt and shame in our culture. The reason this arti- cle was so shocking is that throughout our culture we want others to feel guilty when they offend us, but we don’t want guilt or shame to touch us. None of us like guilt. Often we try to alleviate ourselves of guilt by either avoiding the behavior that leads to guilt or by denying our guilt. Yes, I would encourage avoiding sin! Humble holiness is a very very good thing. How- ever, sometimes trying to avoid guilt leads to a judgmental perfectionism, which avoids guilt, but at the expense of others. The truth is all of us experience guilt. Some of this guilt is good and some is bad. Good guilt comes from the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Bad guilt comes from the condemnation of the enemy. Good guilt we should embrace. Bad guilt we should reject. So, how can you tell the difference? Good Guilt When you sin (unless you have a seared conscience), you feel guilt. As Jesus said, “when [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin…” (John 16:8). Guilt is a very very good thing, for when you feel convicted of your sins, it may lead to confession, for- giveness and restoration. If you deny the guilt you feel, you remain in your sins, which leads to a type of death. As the Apostle James said: “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death” (James 1:14-15). If you repeat the same sin over and over again, eventually your conscience will become seared (1 Timothy 4:2) and you’ll no longer see your sin as sin – a dan- gerous place to be. The Apostle Paul re- minds us in 1 Corinthians 11, to examine ourselves before coming to the Lord’s Sup- per, for those who don’t become, “weak and ill, and some have died” (1 Corinthians 11:30). So what should you do with the good guilt you experience? The Apostle John has the answer: “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). Bad Guilt What about bad guilt? Sometimes people feel paralyzed from past sins. They may have even confessed these sins over and over again, yet feel no relief. This is bad guilt, also known as condemnation. Con- demnation does not come from the Holy Spirit; it comes from Satan. Satan’s pur- pose is to immobilize you and make you useless. His usual lies include: You’re worthless, dirty, stained, unredeemable. You’ll never amount to anything. God could never love you. God could never use you. I’m sure Satan tried these lies on King David after he committed adultery and then murder. If it had been you, I’m sure you’d have felt horrible! Yet what did David say in Psalm 51? “Wash me thor- oughly from my iniquity … Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. … Then I will teach transgres- sors your ways, and sinners will return to you”. (Ps 51:2, 10, & 13). As guilty as David had been, God restored him to be useful for His Kingdom! How might you get rid of the bad guilt? 1. The Apostle James reminds us to “confess our sins one to another.” (James 5:16). 2. When your mind is assaulted with your old sins, say, “I’m not listening!” Remind the enemy that you have been forgiven.

John 15:5

Good Guilt, Bad Guilt, What’s the Difference?

Years ago I read an article in Time or

Newsweek entitled something like What-

ever Happened to Guilt? This secular arti-

cle advocated for the need for guilt and

shame in our culture. The reason this arti-

cle was so shocking is that throughout our

culture we want others to feel guilty when

they offend us, but we don’t want guilt or

shame to touch us. None of us like guilt.

Often we try to alleviate ourselves of guilt

by either avoiding the behavior that leads

to guilt or by denying our guilt. Yes, I

would encourage avoiding sin! Humble

holiness is a very very good thing. How-

ever, sometimes trying to avoid guilt leads

to a judgmental perfectionism, which

avoids guilt, but at the expense of others.

The truth is all of us experience guilt.

Some of this guilt is good and some is bad.

Good guilt comes from the conviction of

the Holy Spirit. Bad guilt comes from the

condemnation of the enemy. Good guilt

we should embrace. Bad guilt we should

reject. So, how can you tell the difference?

Good Guilt

When you sin (unless you have a seared

conscience), you feel guilt. As Jesus said,

“when [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will

convict the world concerning

sin…” (John 16:8). Guilt is a very very

good thing, for when you feel convicted of

your sins, it may lead to confession, for-

giveness and restoration. If you deny the

guilt you feel, you remain in your sins,

which leads to a type of death. As the

Apostle James said: “But each person is

tempted when he is lured and enticed by

his own desire. Then desire when it has

conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when

it is fully grown brings forth death” (James

1:14-15). If you repeat the same sin over

and over again, eventually your conscience

will become seared (1 Timothy 4:2) and

you’ll no longer see your sin as sin – a dan-

gerous place to be. The Apostle Paul re-

minds us in 1 Corinthians 11, to examine

ourselves before coming to the Lord’s Sup-

per, for those who don’t become, “weak

and ill, and some have died” (1 Corinthians

11:30). So what should you do with the

good guilt you experience? The Apostle

John has the answer: “My little children, I

am writing these things to you so that you

may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we

have an advocate with the Father, Jesus

Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).

Bad Guilt

What about bad guilt? Sometimes people

feel paralyzed from past sins. They may

have even confessed these sins over and

over again, yet feel no relief. This is bad

guilt, also known as condemnation. Con-

demnation does not come from the Holy

Spirit; it comes from Satan. Satan’s pur-

pose is to immobilize you and make you

useless. His usual lies include: You’re

worthless, dirty, stained, unredeemable.

You’ll never amount to anything. God

could never love you. God could never use

you. I’m sure Satan tried these lies on

King David after he committed adultery

and then murder. If it had been you, I’m

sure you’d have felt horrible! Yet what did

David say in Psalm 51? “Wash me thor-

oughly from my iniquity … Create in me a

clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit

within me. … Then I will teach transgres-

sors your ways, and sinners will return to

you”. (Ps 51:2, 10, & 13). As guilty as

David had been, God restored him to be

useful for His Kingdom! How might you

get rid of the bad guilt? 1. The Apostle

James reminds us to “confess our sins one

to another.” (James 5:16). 2. When your

mind is assaulted with your old sins, say,

“I’m not listening!” Remind the enemy

that you have been forgiven.

Children’s Ministry

Summer Sunday School Offerings

Beginning July 12th we will have a six week Sum-

mer Sunday School session.

Children K through 5th Grade will meet in the

Children's Sunday School room and will continue in

the Gospel Project curriculum. They will begin a

new study that will examine the birth of the church

in the Acts of the Apostles.

The Youth, 6th through 12th Grade will meet in

the Youth Sunday School Space in the Ministry Cen-

ter and will begin a yearlong study of the Catechism.

Young Adults will meet in the Youth Room and

will study The Parable of the Prodigal Son as taught

by Timothy Keller in his book The Prodigal God.

The Adult Class will meet in the Ministry Center

and will study the attributes of God, discovering His

innate character, qualities, and nature. As we come

to know God better, it will positively affect our rela-

tionship with Him!

Summer classes end August 16th.

Summer Children’s Worship (2nd Sundays)

For the months of June, July, and August, Children's

Worship shall be on the Second Sunday of each

month during 10:30 AM worship. On the Sunday's

where there is not Children's Worship, the children

are absolutely invited to join us in the Sanctuary. We

understand that sometimes little hands need some-

thing to do, so Children's Worship Activity Bags

will be available on the center table in the Narthex.

Enjoy the contents, and then be sure to return the

bags back to the center table so they may be replen-

ished for the next week.

Fall Kick-Off Coming in September

September 13th is our Fall Kick-Off Sunday! We

will enjoy a breakfast served from 9:10 to 9:30 AM,

with Sunday School to immediately follow. We will

have Sunday School offerings for all age groups in-

cluding Nursery, Children, Youth, Young Adult, and

Adult. Also, our Youth Crew and AWANA pro-

grams will resume. Mark your calendars and look

for more details to come.

OUTDOOR BILLBORD SIGN

In September, our current outdoor sign will be re-

placed with a new LED electronic message center

sign that offers the best blend of technology and

evangelism. The monument sign will be erected on

the far northeast side close to the driveway en-

trance. This new sign represents our commitment to

God and to our community that we are here for the

long run. Our outdoor billboard sign is our greatest

communication tool with the community at large.

80% of our advertising is the sign. This sign will

offer state of the art technology allowing us to better

connect with the community regarding our events

and worship services. Our sign is the first impres-

sion we make with those passing by. Our visibility

in the community will increase in ways that advertis-

ing in newspapers can't match. The sign will be

working for us each day (24/7) as hundreds of cars

go by. More than 10% of the adults who join Amer-

ica's congregations each year decide to visit the first

time after seeing the church's sign. Endorsements

and testimonies have demonstrated a double digit

increase in attendance and membership within a year

of the sign placement. The short term and long term

benefits and impact will far greater than the invest-

ment. Doug Conner

Called to the Quiet Retreat Saturday, August 29th, 9-Noon

Do you want to grow in your prayer life? Then come

spend some quite time with your Lord, a time of

prayer, meditation, reflection, and hearing from God.

From nine until noon at our Called to

the Quiet Retreat, we will begin with

Morning Prayer, have a time of di-

rected prayer, meditation, and reflec-

tion, and conclude with Noon Day

Prayers. A booklet is provided to help

guide your time of prayer. Bring your

Bible. You may enjoy walking the

grounds or sitting in a lawn chair for a

portion of your personal time of prayer and meditation.

Spiritual Direction and Reconciliation (Confession)

will be available.

“Called to the Quiet is valuable time spent being still

before our Lord so that He can speak quietly to you

alone, directing your path, cleansing your soul, and re-

freshing your spirit.” – Sudy Fisher

Helping the Poor God’s Way

Throughout the Bible, God makes it clear that it’s our

responsibility to help the poor. For instance on the

Day of Judgment the King (Jesus) will say to those

who feed the hungry, invite the stranger in, clothe the

naked, and visit the sick and those in prison, “whatever

you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine,

you did for me” (Matthew 25). Yet, how do we help

the poor in a way that truly helps them? First, have an

attitude of generosity and openhandedness, not hard-

heartedness or tightfistedness (Deuteronomy 15). Sec-

ond, help the poor in a way that does not foster laziness

or dependency, does not provide for illicit activities,

and gives them love, honor, respect, and provision.

Giving and lending (expecting nothing in return) to the

poor is crucial in a crisis. However, in the long run

applying the Gleaning Laws (Leviticus 19) to the poor

is the best solution – “When you reap the harvest of

your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field…

Leave them for the poor and the alien.” In other

words, don’t just give money to the poor, leave some

work (home and business) for the poor to do.

Seminary Support Sunday

August 30th

Raising up the next generation of Anglican priests and

lay leaders is crucial for the expansion of God’s King-

dom here in America. The cost can be prohibitive for

many. Therefore, on August 30th we will take a special

offering to support Anglican seminary students. Please

give generously! Our sermon will be given by our own

Rev. Dr. Gordon Pike, Associate Academic Dean for

ProMETA and professor of ProMETA, an online Span-

ish-speaking Seminary.

Want to Hear Fr. Herb Teach

Wednesday Night Bible Study – 6:30 to 7:30 PM Come enjoy an evening of fellowship and spiritual nurture. Our August schedule includes:

5th In the Dust of the

Rabbi When the Rabbi Says

“Come”

We will explore the first century rabbi, and specifically Jesus’

ministry as a rabbi. It is rabbi Jesus who personally calls his

disciples to “come follow me.” Our study includes a video

presentation by Ray Vander Laan and time for teaching and discussion.

12th In the Dust of the

Rabbi When the Rabbi Says

“Go”

First century rabbis had students/followers called disciples. We will explore

the life of a disciple, and specifically the disciples of Jesus. Our study in-

cludes a video presentation by Ray Vander Laan and time for teaching and

discussion.

19th In the Dust of the

Rabbi The Presence of

God—A Countercul-

tural Community

Jesus’ disciples understood that the goal of those who follow Jesus is not

simply to seek converts, but to make disciples. Disciples not only spend time

with their Master, but become a countercultural community. Our study in-

cludes a video presentation by Ray Vander Laan and time for teaching and

discussion.

26th In the Dust of the

Rabbi Living Stones

The Jews traveled to Jerusalem at least three times each year to worship the

Lord in the temple. The temple was made of huge beautiful stones. Within

those stones dwelt the tangible presence of God on earth. We are living

stones. Within us now dwells the tangible presence of God. Our study in-

cludes a video presentation by Ray Vander Laan and time for teaching and

discussion.
