Reflecting on God’s Word

First Sunday of Lent I suspect that the real reason we avoid the desert is because in all that monotony there are no hiding places, no paths to crawl our way behind some kink of hill, no busyness that allows us to duck beneath the rippling surface of honesty, no phone calls to undo the silence that echoes our real selves. Curious that we should be afraid of the nothing rather than of the something. Yet it is the nothing, in the end, that makes the revela on happen. Such is the unse ling power of any desert, to reveal what we most fear in life, the real self that is perhaps less known and more imposing than anyone else’s self. Deserts do that, and so we avoid them like kids dancing about their homework. Over the years we learn that it’s safer to fri er about on the fringe of Lent than to get lost in its vast and desert emp ness. We’ve grown good at fri ering, at

nkering with days stripped of television or meals that have surrendered their dessert. This fri ering goes on simply because when it’s all over and done we are able to go back to the lives we’ve come to enjoy and treasure and nothing has been redone, least of all our real selves. Jesus, however, risked the desert. Never just a nkerer, he dared to trek about the emp ness for forty days and nights. This week’s first scripture is a piece from Noah’s tale in the bobbing ark. Thus we might wonder which desert was more daun ng, forty days and nights of Noah’s deluge or of Jesus’ drought. Yet both found themselves in new and different worlds, neither of which had ever before been mapped.

Share your Faith Collection for the Church in Latin America & Eastern Europe This weekend we are taking up the Collec on for the Church in La n America and Eastern Europe. Catholics in La n America and the Caribbean face many challenges, including violence and a lack of both clergy and lay leadership to witness to the gospel message. Your support shares the faith with those in need, including the youth of Holy Family Parish in San Miguel, El Salvador. These young people, at high risk for violence, o en lack an educa on in values and cri cal-thinking skills. To address this need, the parish designed a youth enrichment program. Funded by the Collec on, this program gives the youth an opportunity to share their faith and break the cycle of violence in their neighborhoods. Please give generously to this week’s collec on. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Confession is me to encounter God, it's not a

dry cleaners, pope says

By Cindy Wooden

Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- While people must be honest and specific about

their sins when they go to confession, they will miss the sacrament's key

grace if they are "completely mechanical" about lis ng their sins, Pope

Francis said.

Confession is not a me for judgment, but for an encounter with the

merciful God who is always ready to forgive those who seek pardon, the

pope said January 23 during Mass in the chapel of his residence, the

Domus Sanctae Marthae.

"So many mes, confessions seem like rou ne, a formality," he said.

"Blah, blah, blah. Completely mechanical!"

"Where is the encounter" in that kind of confession, the pope asked, "the

encounter with the Lord who reconciles, embraces you and celebrates? That is our good God."

According to Va can Radio, Pope Francis said parents, priests and catechists need to teach

people how to "confess well, because going to confession is not like going to the dry cleaners

to have a stain removed. No! It is going to meet the Father, who reconciles, forgives and

celebrates" the return of the sinner.

When considering the sacrament, he said, the first thing to remember is that "God always

forgives. He never res of forgiving. We are the ones who re of asking forgiveness, but he

never res of forgiving us."

"Even if you have lived a life of many sins, of many ugly things, but in the end you are a bit

repentant, ask forgiveness," Pope Francis said. "He will forgive you immediately. He always

forgives."

People o en think that they must somehow buy God's forgiveness, he said. But that is not

true. "You don't have to pay anything" because "Christ has paid the price for us."

"There is no sin that he won't forgive," the pope said. Like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, he said, most of the me God will not even let you finish saying how sorry you are before he embraces you and forgives you.

Catechist Needed We are in need of another Catechist to teach the Grade 4, 5, 6 combina on Venture class on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. We also need a few subs tute Catechists who can fill in on short no ce when a teacher is ill. Please contact Robin Mayes at (714) 998-1070 if you can fill either of these needs.

First Reconciliation We are so happy for our second grade students who will celebrate their First Reconcilia on next Saturday! The whole power of the sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God's grace and joining us with him in an in mate friendship. Reconcilia on with God is thus the purpose and effect of this sacrament. For those who receive the sacrament of Penance with contrite heart and religious disposi on, reconcilia on is usually followed by peace and serenity of conscience with strong spiritual consola on. Indeed the sacrament of Reconcilia on with God brings about a true ‘spiritual resurrec on,’ restora on of the dignity and blessings of the life of the children of God, of which the most precious is friendship with God. —Catechism of the Catholic Church _______________________________________________________________________

Lenten Book Study During Lent, we will be reading and discussing the book Jesus: A Pilgrimage by Jesuit priest James Mar n. In his book, Fr. Mar n reflects on the life of Jesus through the eyes of a pilgrim to the Holy Land, blending Scripture and personal experiences to gain a deeper understanding of Scripture, the places where Jesus lived and preached, and the story of Jesus’ life. This is a deligh ul book to read and will give us much to think about during the days of Lent. The group will be led by Charlene Dumitru, and will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Ministry Center Library from February 25 through April 1. Copies of the book may be purchased through Amazon.com, or at your favorite local bookstore. Please read the Introduc on through Chapter 4 (pages 1—96) prior to the first mee ng _______________________________________________________________________

Wondering Why Some of our evangelical friends speak of being “born-again.” What they mean by that is a personal encounter with Jesus that is transforma ve in their lives. It is a moment of conversion, of metanoia, or turning in a new direc on. This can be a powerful experience for some, which is why they are o en so enthusias c

Faith Formation & Enrichment

in sharing their experience with others. We are all born-again through the sacrament of bap sm. For Catholics, our bap sm is our rebirth into Jesus and into his Church. It is the beginning of conversion, which we believe is not just a one- me event, but an event which con nues daily throughout our whole lives. Our Catechumens and Candidates have been preparing for the Sacraments of Ini a on. Many of them have truly had conversion experiences that drama cally changed them. Others have traveled a quieter road of recognizing a growing and persistent need for God in their lives which has led them to the Catholic faith. Lent is the final me of prepara on for these people who seek to enter the Church through Bap sm, or to complete their ini a on with Confirma on and Eucharist for those already bap zed in another faith tradi on. For many months, and some mes years, they have learned about the faith, par cipated in works of mercy and charity, prayed with our community, and listened to and reflected on the Scriptures. As Lent begins they enter into a me of scru ny where they take a deep look into their own lives and recognize the places where conversion is s ll needed. They are called to surrender themselves to Christ, and before our en re community they will celebrate the Scru nies on the third, fourth and fi h Sundays of Lent, when we will pray that all darkness will be removed from them and they will be filled with the Light of Christ. Lent is a me of preparing for rebirth, certainly for those who will be bap zed, confirmed and receive Christ in the Eucharist for the first me, but also for the en re community of faith. The Church calls us all to this renewal. As the Catechumens prepare themselves for new birth in the waters of Bap sm, and nature prepares for the rebirth of spring, each of us is called to seek out the cold dead places in our spirits and to allow the Christlight to bring warmth to those places and bring us to fuller and newer life. Lent is not just about depriva on. It is about pruning away dead wood, so that new blossoms will bloom more beau fully and abundantly than before. On the first two Sundays of Lent we hear that Jesus was tempted in the desert where he fasted and prayed, and that he was transfigured on the mountain top into a radiant being whose iden ty is validated by the voice of the Father. As these Scripture readings lead us to reflect, Lent is a desert me of fas ng, prayer and tempta on, but also the me which brings us to transforma on, to new life, to being born-again, and again, and again, and again, every me we renew our bap smal promises at Easter.

¡No!

Francisco. "Él lo perdonará a uno inmediatamente. Él siempre perdona".
