Jesus heals a paralytic

and calls Levi

Mark 2:1-22



Jesus was teaching in Capernaum at

somebody’s house. There were a lot of people

there. So many people that there were people

waiting outside the door to come in.

As Jesus taught four men were bringing their

friend to Jesus to be healed. But when they got

to the house they saw there was no room for

them.



So, they climbed up to the top of the house and

started to dig a hole in the roof. It was a lot of

hard work, but they kept working. Finally they

had a big enough hole.

Then they slowly started lowering their friend.

As he was slowly lowered down Jesus saw him

and he saw the man’s friend’s up above.

Jesus saw their faith and said, “Your sins are

forgiven.”



Well, the teachers who were there heard this

and they weren’t happy.

They started talking to each other and

whispering, “Who does he think he is? It’s not

his job to forgive sins. Only God can forgive

sins.”

Now Jesus heard them, and He knew what they

were thinking. So, he answered them, “Which

is easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Get

up and walk’? But, so you know I have theauthority to do both,” and then He turned to the

man, “Stand up and walk.”

And as soon as Jesus said that, the man stood

up and walked out in front of all of them.

Everyone saw this and they were amazed!



Later Jesus went out for a walk by the lake. As

He was walking a large crowd followed Him

and He kept walking. As Jesus walked he saw

Levi sitting at the tax collector’s booth.

“Come follow me,” Jesus said. And Levi gotup and followed Jesus.

Levi invited Jesus and all of his disciples to

come to his house for a party.

Then Levi went out and invited all of his

friends. Everyone he knew to come and meet

Jesus.



Jesus came in and sat down and all of the

Pharisees and the scribes were watching Jesus

sitting there eating, and they started whispering

again, “Doesn’t Jesus know who he’s eating

with? Look at these people. They are tax

collectors and sinners. How can he eat with

them?”

Jesus looked around at the people at the table.

He knew that as a “good Jew,” He should not

eat with them, but was that what God wanted?

Or how God wants us to treat others?

So, Jesus asked them “Who needs a doctor? It

is not the healthy who need a doctor, but a sick

person. I have come not to call those who are

already in church, but to seek out and save thelost. I am where God wants me.”



Now John the Baptizer and his disciples were

fasting. And the Pharisees were fasting too.

But Jesus and His disciples never fasted, so the

people became confused, so they went to Jesus

and asked Him about it.

“Jesus why do you and your disciples never

fast?”

“Why would people stop partying if the party

is still going on? If the groom is still there,would the wedding guests stop eating? No,

they would enjoy themselves while he is still

there, and when he is gone, then they would be

sad.”
