Jesus Heals a Blind Man

Items Needed: laminated faces – 1 happy (healed), 1 sad (blind); some mud; a cloth

Lesson Time:

Friends, it’s time for The Big God Story! Get comfy on your Story Spots and get your ears ready to hear another adventure. Before we get started, let’s pray to God and ask Him to help us understand what He wants to teach us. Lead children in a Prayer of Release to pause, be still, and ask the Holy Spirit to quiet their hearts and minds.

God is powerful. He can heal people and turn a little bit of food into a lot of food—God can do anything! This part of The Big God Story is about a man who was blind. Do you know what the word blind means? Children respond. This man couldn’t see anything—he lived in total darkness. Since he couldn’t see, he had to use his other senses to live. He used his ears to hear and his nose to smell and his mouth to taste. What are some noises you hear often? What’s your favorite thing to smell? What’s your favorite thing to touch? Interact with responses. When you hear, smell, and touch things, you’re using your senses. We’re going to use some of our senses during The Big God Story today.

Let’s all close our eyes. What do you see? It’s dark, isn’t it? That’s what the man saw. Remind children to keep eyes closed. Make a walking sound on your legs by patting them with palms of hands. Do you hear the footsteps? That’s what the blind man heard. Jesus was walking along one day and He saw the blind man. (Show blind man face.) Some of the people asked Jesus why this man was blind. Jesus told them the man was blind so people could see God’s power shown in his life.

Jesus spit on the ground and made some mud with his spit. (Show kids the mud) Then He rubbed the mud on the man’s eyes. We have mud in our bag, and Jesus used mud on the man’s eyes. (Put mud on man’s eyes)

After Jesus put the mud on the man’s eyes, He told the man to go down to the Pool of Siloam and wash it all off. (Wash the mud off the man’s eyes + change the face to the one that can see and is smiling) When the man did this, he could see! He saw all the beautiful colors God made. He saw people’s faces he'd never seen before. It was a miracle! Do you think the mud healed the blind man? Pause for answers. No, it wasn’t the mud—it was Jesus. Jesus showed God’s power by healing the blind man.

When the neighbors saw the blind man, they asked if he was the same blind man they'd seen begging on the street. Some people thought he was, but others didn’t believe it. He looked like the same man, but there was one thing that was very different: He could see! The man told his neighbors that he used to be the blind beggar. He told them how Jesus had put mud on his eyes, and when he washed it off, he could see again.

God did something amazing when He healed this man. One minute the man was blind, and the next he could see. Do you think the people who knew the blind man saw something powerful? They sure did! They saw that God is powerful. The blind man’s neighbors saw a miracle. God still shows His power today. We can see it in many ways, like when He heals someone, when He answers prayers, and even in the way He made us. God is powerful.
