DAY ONENote: Before class, copy Teacher Resource: Love Means Being Present (page 375 in this guide), enough to give one three-page handout to each student.
Warm-UpA. Have the class stand and make the Sign of the Cross. Then say together the first part of the
Apostles’ Creed that you have been practicing: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary. Then say the Our Father as a class.
B. Have the class remain standing, and let them know you’re going to tell a couple of short stories. For each one, the main character will have a choice to make. Tell them to move to one side of the room if their answer is (a), and the other if their answer is (b).
Jane’s father went on a long business trip to a faraway city. He was gone for two weeks. Jane missed her daddy! One night Jane was in her room. She heard her father’s car pull up in the driveway. She heard him open the door. Should she:
a. Meet him at the door and hug him.
b. Stay in her room and look at a picture of her dad.
Mario was soon to have a baby brother. He was excited and couldn’t wait to meet him. The day finally came that his brother was born. A couple of days later, his parents brought him home. Should he:
a. Ask to see a picture of the baby.
b. Be with his baby brother.
C. Have the children gather around now, and spend some talk talking about students’ reactions. Explain that pictures are like symbols. They show us what a person looks like, but the pictures are not that person.

LESSON PLAN
Activity A. Talk for a few more minutes about what it means to be present with someone. It means to be
physically with that person. Spend time remembering and discussing all the ways you have seen this truth in all you’ve learned about this year. For example:
ӹ God loves us so much that He came down from Heaven to be with us. He was present with us.
ӹ Mary wanted to visit her cousin Elizabeth. She was present with her.
ӹ The shepherds and the wise men followed the star to be with Jesus. They were present with Him.
ӹ When Mary and Joseph lost Jesus, they went back to the Temple.
ӹ When the father of the lost son saw his son returning, he ran up to him and embraced him.
ӹ Mary, John, and St. Mary Magdalene stayed with Jesus as He was on the Cross.
ӹ St. Peter Claver was present with the enslaved Africans.
ӹ St. Teresa of Calcutta was present with the poorest people in India.
B. Ask if it would have meant so much to Mary just to be able to see a picture of her cousin Elizabeth. Or if it would have been the same for St. Peter Claver simply to write the slaves in Colombia a letter, as opposed to being physically with them.
C. Distribute Teacher Resource: Love Means Being Present (page 375 in this guide) and have your students color the pictures.
Formative AssessmentA. Put students in pairs and have them choose one or more character sets from Love Means Being
Present to cut out and tape to craft sticks. They should engage in imaginative play, dramatically showing how those people were present to each other.
B. For the next class, have students bring in a photograph of themselves having dinner (or any meal) with their family. Make sure to bring one of your own!
DAY TWOWarm-UpA. Begin class by having the children stand and do two sets of 30 one-arm push-ups against a wall.
B. Have the class stand and make the Sign of the Cross. Then say together the first part of the Apostles’ Creed that you have been practicing, and the Our Father.

LESSON PLAN
Invitation to Witness: Share with your students your photo, along with some special memories of having meals together with family, either as a child or as a parent, especially mentioning how these helped you grow in love for your family. God understands that having meals together are a way we show love.
C. Ask any students who brought a photograph from home to share it now.
D. Note that sometimes loved ones are separated. In some cases, they can’t be together. This doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. The fact that they want to be together shows us how love means wanting to be with someone.
E. Have your students complete Sharing a Family Meal Shows Love (page 271) in their Holy Family Album. They will need a family photo, if one is available, or they may draw a picture of themselves having a meal with their family.
ActivityA. Review how God loves people so much that
He became man and made His dwelling among us. Jesus knew that He would not be on earth forever, so He did some special things to be able to stay with us.
B. One of them has to do with St. Peter. Jesus started the Church, and put St. Peter in charge of the Church. We learned about that in the last lesson.
C. Jesus did something else. He created a way to continue to be with us here on earth every day. Jesus works miracles, and we are part of one of those miracles every time we go to Mass. The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We call this the Eucharist.
D. Explain that the Eucharist doesn’t look like Jesus, but it is Jesus.
E. Read aloud the information on Jesus Is with Us in the Eucharist (page 180).
Jesus Is with Us in the Eucharist
God loves us so much that He
came to dwell with us.
He had a very special meal
with His Apostles. This meal
was the Last Supper.
Jesus told the Apostles, “This is my
body, which will be given for you” (Luke 22:19b).
The bread and wine became His Body and Blood.
Every time we go to Mass, the Last Supper is
made present to us again! God
changes bread and wine into His
Body and Blood.
Jesus is still with us. He dwells
within us when we receive the
Eucharist.

Formative AssessmentA. Ask your students to remember the activity you did yesterday, where you decided whether
the children in the stories, Jane and Mario, should be with their family members or just look at pictures of them. Review that pictures are like symbols of a person.
B. Connect this to the Eucharist. We have pictures of Jesus, and other signs of Him, but the Eucharist is not a symbol of Jesus; it is Jesus Himself! He is truly present.
C. Ask the children to put this into their own words.
DAY THREEWarm-UpA. Have the class stand and make the Sign of the Cross. Then say together the first part of the
Apostles’ Creed that you have been practicing. You may also begin routinely adding the Our Father to each religion class routine.
B. Spend time reviewing all you have discussed the last couple of days, and clarify any questions your students have.
Invitation to Witness: Share with the children what the gift of Holy Communion means to you. Tell any story you feel comfortable sharing, but let the children recognize in your story the truth that the Eucharist is the real presence of Christ.
C. If any students have older siblings who have received the Eucharist, ask for volunteers to share stories of their First Communions.
D. Remember with students how God became man and made His dwelling among us. Mary was His first dwelling place. Every time we receive Jesus in the Eucharist, He dwells within us! So we must be careful to avoid sin, so we can give Him a good home.
Activity and AssessmentHave students color the bottom part of the illustration on Holy Communion (page 181). Ask them to draw themselves and their families in the picture.
