JESUS DIED SPIRITUALLY
Romans 5:12
KJ…Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world
and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that
all have sinned.
The death Paul is talking about is a spiritual condition
brought on by sin.
Ephesians 2:1 says of our condition before we were Born-
Again…”We were dead in trespasses and sins.
God told Adam in Genesis 2:17 that The Day he disobeyed
God, he would surely die.
Adam did not die physically for 930 years; but The Day he
sinned a Spiritual condition entered him, called Death,
(Spiritual Death). This condition, Spiritual Death separated
Adam and all men that followed God. It made man a Spiritu-
al outlaw.
Forgiveness of Sin would not help man, Sacrifice would not
help man to get back in fellowship with God – ONLY A
NEW NATURE – A NEW BIRTH.
II Corinthians 5:21 says that Jesus was made to be sin for
us…
On the CROSS when Jesus was made sin with our sin, He
cried out, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Or why have you left me.
At that moment in time, the Life and Nature of God left Jesus
and He came under the dominion of SPIRITUAL DEATH
and descended into the PRISON HOUSE of suffering for
spirits separated from God.
6
Jesus was a dead man in HELL, suffering with our spiritual
condition.
Acts 2:31 says, “He seeing this before SPAKE of the the res-
urrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither
his flesh did see CORRUPTION.”
Revelation 1:5, Colossians 1:18 state that Jesus Christ was
the FIRST BORN from the dead. Not physical death but
Spiritual Death.
These Scriptures will make it clear exactly what Jesus expe-
rienced for us in the Death, Burial, and Mighty Resurrection;
and what He has ACCOMPLISHED on man’s behalf.
THANK GOD FOR JESUS

I Peter 3:18
KJ…For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for
the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death
in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.
BARCLAY…He underwent physical death, but in his spirit
he was brought to life.
BECK…made alive in His spirit.
GODBEY…quickened in spirit (His own human spirit)…
NORLIE…made alive again in His spirit.
WUEST…made alive with respect to the spirit (His human
spirit)…
KNOX…endowed with fresh life in his spirit.
AMP…made alive in the spirit.
CONCORDANT…vivified in spirit
DOUAY…enlivened in the spirit.
CONFRATERNITY…he brought to life in the spirit.
LAUBACH…His spirit was made alive.
CP…his spirit was made very much alive.
MARSHALL…quickened…in (the) spirit.
8
If he was made alive in His spirit, He must have been spiritu-
ally dead.
Hebrews 2:9
KJ…But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the
angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and
honor, that he by the grace of God should taste death for eve-
ry man.
KNOX…he was to taste death, and taste it on behalf of all.
NEB…in tasting death, he should stand for us all.
DIAGLOTT…by God’s favour, he might taste of Death on
behalf of every one.
Isaiah 53:9
KJ…And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the
rich in his death; (“Death” is plural in the Hebrew: “deaths”)
because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in
his mouth.
Matthew 27:46
KJ…And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice,
saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God,
My God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Matthew 27:50
KJ…Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yield-
ed up the ghost.
Jesus died twice: spiritually, then physically.
Romans 6:23
KJ…For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eter-
nal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
9
The wages of sin is first spiritual death (Genesis 2:17).
Since Jesus was made to be sin, He of necessity died spiritu-
ally.
II Corinthians 5:21
KJ…For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no
sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
TRANSLATOR’S…God made him to be sin itself on our
behalf…
GOOD NEWS…God made him share our sin in order that in
union with him we might share the righteousness of God.
NEB…God made him one with the sinfulness of men…
KNOX…God made him into sin for us…
He was so literally made sin in spirit that He had to be made
righteous in spirit again.
I Timothy 3:16
KJ…And without controversy great is the mystery of godli-
ness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit,
seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the
world, received up into glory.
BECK…became righteous in spirit…
YOUNG…declared righteous in spirit…
20C…pronounced righteous in spirit…
WEEKES…was made righteous in spirit…
KNOX…justification won in the realm of the Spirit; a vision
seen by angels.
“Manifested in the flesh” would include His birth to His ac-
tual physical death when He no longer was in the flesh.
“Justified (Made righteous) in spirit, seen of angels, preached
unto the Gentiles” would all have to be in the spirit before
He was raised physically because the Gentiles were not
preached to in His earthly ministry – only the lost sheep of
10
the house of Israel. “Believed on in the world” refers to His
post-resurrection appearances; “received up into glory” is the
Ascension. He was made righteous in spirit after He had
first been made sin in spirit and died physically.
I Corinthians 1:30
KJ…But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made
unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and
redemption.
He has been made (lit.) righteousness unto us, after having
been made sin first.
Romans 6:6
KJ…Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him,
that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we
should not serve sin.
LAUBACH…our old self…
MOST ALL VERSIONS…was crucified…
“Our old self was crucified…so that our bodies…” It was
the condition of our spirit that was crucified with Him. What
was the condition of our old self?
Ephesians 2:1
KJ…And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespass-
es and sins.
Romans 8:2
KJ…For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath
made me free from the law of sin and death.
We were formerly dead (spiritually) in sin. This former con-
dition of our spirit (old self) was crucified with Him. He be-
11
came exactly what we were.
Ephesians 2:5
KJ…Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us
together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)
WAY…thrilled us with the same new life wherewith He
quickened our Messiah…
20C…gave Life to us in giving Life to the Christ.
AMP…He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same
new life with which He quickened Him.
KNOX…he, in giving life to Christ, gave life to us too…
CP…God in his overflowing sympathy and great love
breathed the same new life into us as into Christ…
We and He were made alive together. This is not physical
resurrection verse 6 refers to. If we were made alive togeth-
er, then He was made alive at some time. If He was made
alive, then He must have been spiritually dead.
Colossians 2:13
KJ…And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumci-
sion of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, hav-
ing forgiven you all trespasses.
20C…to you God gave life in giving life to Christ!
KNOX…And in giving life to him, he gave life to you, too…
MARSHALL…he co-quickened you with him…
Revelation 1:5
KJ…And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and
the first-begotten of the dead…
WEYMOUTH…the first of the dead to be born to Life…
WADE…the First of the dead to be born into renewed
Life…
NOLI…the pioneer of the resurrection…
20C1…the First of the Dead to be born again…
12
Colossians 1:18
KJ…And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead…
KNOX…it begins with him, since his was the first birth of
our death…
20C1…Being the first to be born again from the dead, he is
the source of its Life…
Acts 2:24
KJ…Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains
death: because it was not possible that he should be holden
of it.
BERK…Him God raised up by setting him free from the
pangs of death; for He could not be held in its grip.
CUNN…whom God raised, relieving the birth-pangs of
death…
Williams…But God raised Him up by loosing Him from the
pangs of death.
PLAIN ENG…having loosed the birth-pangs of death…
MARSH…Whom God raised up loosening the pangs of
death…
ROTH…whom God raised up, loosing the pangs of death…
WEY…But God has raised Him to life, having terminated
the throngs of death…
W.E. Vines – “pangs” Greek ODIN – a birth pang, travail
pain; translated “sorrows” in Matthew 24:8 and Mark 13:8.
Greek verb ODINO: “travail in birth” in Galatians 4:19,
“travail upon a woman with child” in Revelation 12:2 and in
I Thessalonians 5:3. If God loosed Him from the pangs of
when He raised Him up, the pangs of death would have to be
spiritual because He was released from physical death pangs
as soon as he left his body, three days before His resurrec-
tion. It is interesting to note that Catholic versions, based on
other manuscripts, say “hades” instead of “death.”
13
JERU…God raise him to life, freeing him from the pangs of
Hades; for it was impossible for him to held in its power.
DOUAY…Whom God hath raised up having loosed the sor-
rows of hell, as it was impossible that he should be holden by
it.
CONFRATERNITY…having loosed the sorrows of hell,
because it was not possible that he should be held fast by it.
Jesus had a two-fold resurrection, from spiritual death and
from physical death.
Acts 13:32-34
KJ…God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in
that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the
second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten
thee. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead,
now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I
will give you the sure mercies of David.
1. Spiritual: “…this day I have begotten thee…”
2. Physical: “And as concerning that he raised him up
from the dead, now no more to return to corrup-
tion…”
NEW BERK…abandoned to the realm of the dead…
WEY…He was not left forsaken in the Unseen World…
ROTH…neither was he abandoned unto hades…
Job 25:4-6
KJ…man that is a worm? And the son of man, which is a
worm?
A worm is serpent-like. Man is a partaker of Satanic nature
due to the fall; Jesus bore that nature.
14
John 3:14
KJ…And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
even so must the Son of man be lifted up.
Numbers 21:6-9
KJ…And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and
they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. There-
fore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for
we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto
the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses
prayed for the people. And the Lord said unto Moses, make
thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come
to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it,
shall live. And Moses, made a serpent of brass, and put it
upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten
any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
The serpent was the likeness of the thing destroying the Isra-
elites. Jesus became sin and died spiritually. The worm and
the serpent denote union and harmony with the nature of the
Adversary.
JESUS IN HELL
Acts 2:27
KJ…Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt
thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
BERK…thou wilt not abandon my soul to the realm of the
dead.
WEY…For thou wilt not leave me in the unseen world for-
saken.
ROTH…Thou wilt not abandon my soul unto hades…
The key to the significance of this verse is “leave.” W.E.
Vines – “leave” : Greek ENKATALEIPO – to forsake, aban-
15
don, leave in straits, or helpless, as in Matthew 27:46, II
Timothy 4:10, and Hebrews 13:5.
Those in paradise or Abraham’s bosom were comforted, not
abandoned or forsaken (Luke 16:22-26) Jesus was in the un-
godly side.
Matthew 12:40
KJ…For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the
whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and
three nights in the heart of the earth.
GN…In the same way that Jonah spent three days and three
nights in the big fish, so will the Son of man spend three
days and night in the depths of the earth.
Since Jesus’ stay in the heart of the earth (not the grave) was
like Jonah’s stay in the belly of the whale, what was Jonah’s
experience like? This would tell us something of what Je-
sus’ experience was like.
Jonah 2:1-6
KJ…The Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the
fish’s belly. And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction
unto the Lord, and he heard; out of the belly of hell cried I,
and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the
deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me
about; all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I
said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward
thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to
the soul; the depth closed me round about, the weeds were
wrapped about my head. I went down tot eh bottoms of the
mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever:
yet has thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my
God.
Notice the terms “affliction,” “the deep,” “floods,”
“billows,” “waves,” “cast out,” “the depth,” “weeds,”
16
“corruption” (margin, the pit.) Jonah did not have a restful,
paradise-type experience to say the least.
GN…(2) From the deep in the world of the dead I cried for
help and you heard me. (4) I thought I had been banished
from your presence and would never see your holy temple
again. (6) I went down to the very roots of the mountains
into the land whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord
my God, brought me back from the depth alive.
BASIC ENG…(2)…out of the deepest underworld I sent up
a cry, and you gave ear to my voice. (6)…you have taken up
my life from the underworld, O Lord my God.
MASORETIC OT…(3) Out of the belly of the netherworld
cried I…(6)…Yet, have thou brought up my life from the
pit…
ROTH…then didst thou bring up—out of the pit—my life…
NAMER…(2)…from the midst of the nether world I cried
for help…(5)…the abyss enveloped me…(6)…the bars of
the nether world were closing behind me forever, but you
brought my life up from the pit…
BERK…(2)…from the innermost part (womb) of Sheol I
cried for help…
Psalm 88:4-8,11,12,16
KJ…I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am
as a man that hath no strength: Free among the dead, like the
slain that lie in the grave whom thou rememberest no more:
and they are cut off from thy hand. Thou hast laid me in the
lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. Thy wrath lieth hard
upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Se-
lah. Thou hast put away mine acquaintence far from me; thy
terrors have cut me off.
KNOX…(4)…a man past all help, (5) there among the lord-
less dead…(8)…I lie in a prison whence there is no escape.
BAS ENG…(5) My soul is among the dead, like those in the
underworld, to whom you give not more thought; for they
are cut off from your care.
17
JERU…(6) You have plunged me to the bottom of the Pit, to
its darkest, deepest place, weighted down by your anger,
drowned beneath your waves.
MOFF…(6) In the nethermost pit thou hast placed me, in
abysses dark and deep; (7) thy wrath lies heavey upon me,
thy waves all overwhelm me. (8)…I cannot escape from my
prison. (11)…thy faithfulness in the world below.
NAB…(7) You have plunged me into the bottom of the pit,
into the dark abyss.
NEB…(16) Thy burning fury has swept over me, thy on-
slaughts have put me to silence.
Romans 10:6,7
KJ…But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this
wise, say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven?
(that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, Who shall de-
scend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from
the dead.)
The Greek word for “the deep” is “abussos.”
W.E. Vines – ABUSSOS: “bottom, bottomless,” ;
“bottomless…is used as a noun denoting the abyss (A.V.,
“bottomless pit”). It describes an immeasurable depth, the
underworld, the lower regions, the abyss of Sheol. …the ref-
erence is to the lower regions of the abode of demons, out of
which they can be let loose, Revelation 11:7; 17:8; it is
found seven times in the Apocalypse, 9:1,2,11; 11:7; 17:8;
20:1,3…” See also Luke 8:31
Colossians 2:15
KJ…And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made
a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
This is what happened in the abyss, the abode of demons.
“In it” is the Greed “en auto” – “in Him,” not “in it.” Thus
the 14th verse is parenthetical, and the 15th verse here goes
with the 13th verse which says we were made alive together.
18
In other words, the 15th verse took place after He was quick-
ened, not at the cross.
KNOX…the dominions and powers he (God) robbed of their
prey, put them to an open shame, led them away in triumph,
through him.
ALFORD…stripping off from himself the principalities and
the powers, he (God) made a show of them openly, triumph-
ing over them in him.
CONY…And he (God) disarmed the Principalities and the
Powers (which fought against Him) and put them to open
shame, leading them captive in the triumph of Christ.
PHILLIPS…And then, having drawn the sting of all the
powers ranged against us, he exposed the, shattered, empty
and defeated, in his final glorious triumphant act!
WEY…And the hostile princes and rulers He shook off from
Himself, and boldly displayed them as His conquests…
BARCLAY…he stripped the demonic powers and authori-
ties of their power, and made a public spectacle of them, as if
they had been captives in a victor’s triumphal procession.
WAND…he stripped away like a cast-off garment every de-
monic Rule and Authority and made a public exhibition of
them…
NOLI…He despoiled the infernal dominions and realms. He
dragged their rulers as captives in procession…
The word for “spoiled” is “enekduo” from “ekduo.” Under
“strip,” W.E. Vines – “ekduo” is “to take off, strip off, is
used especially of clothes.”
Romans 5:6
KJ…For when we were yet without strength, in due time
Christ died for the ungodly.
Romans 5:8
KJ…But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while
were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
19
If He died for, that is, on our behalf of or in the stead of the
ungodly (not just the righteous dead in Abraham’s bosom)
then He suffered the consequences of the ungodly’s death.
He went where they would have gone.
The most common objective to all of this is taken from Luke
23:43: “And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, to
day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” The Greek word for
today is “semeron.” Bullinger’s Critical Lexicon and Con-
cordance to the English and Greek New Testament says: “
‘Semeron’ when it comes after a verb, belongs to that verb,
unless it is separated from it and thrown into the next clause
by the presence of ‘oti’ (that), e.g.:”
Luke 19:9. ‘oti this day is salvation come.’
Luke 4:21. ‘oti this day is the Scripture fulfilled.’
Mark 14:30. ‘oti this day before the cock crow you will deny
me.’
Without oti:
Matthew 21:28. ‘go today.’
Luke 22:34
Luke 22:43 ‘Verily to thee I say this day, with Me shalt thou
be in Paradise.’
(The words to day BEING MADE SOLEMN AND EM-
PHATIC)
This is in harmony with numberless Old Testament passages:
Deuteronomy 6:6; 7:11; 8:1; 10:13; 11:8,13,28; 13:18; 19:9;
27:4; 31:2; etc. where the Septuagint corresponds to Luke
23:43.
Other references: Matthew 6:30; 16:3; 21:28; Luke 5:26,
12:28; 13:32,33; 19:5; 23:43; 24:21; Hebrews 3:7,13,15; 4:7;
5:5; 8:8; James 4:13.
