  • Do you know what this word means? In the gospel a covenant is a sacred agreement or promise between Heavenly Father and his children.
  • Slide 6
  • When we keep our covenants with Heavenly Father, he will always fulfill his part. But if we do not keep our covenant promises, the covenant is broken.
  • Slide 7
  • Keeping our baptismal covenants is a key to blessings and eternal life. Eternal life is becoming like Heavenly Father and living with him forever.
  • Slide 8
  • As we learn of Alma and his people we will be reminded of our baptismal covenants and how we can better keep them.

  • Lesson 12: Alma Baptizes at the Waters of Mormon, Primary 4: Book of Mormon, (1997),39 Alma Teaches and Baptizes, Book of Mormon Stories, Ch. 15, p. 43&45

  • Alma escaped from King Noahs servants and hid for many days. While he was hiding, he wrote down what the prophet Abinadi had taught.
  • Slide 11
  • Alma repented of his sins and went to the Nephites secretly, teaching them Abinadis message. Alma told the people to have faith in Jesus Christ and repent.
  • Slide 12
  • During the day Alma hid in a pocket of trees near a pool called the Waters of Mormon.
  • Slide 13
  • Those who believed Almas teachings went to the Waters of Mormon and were baptized. Alma baptized 204 people into the Church of Christ.
  • Slide 14
  • Alma ordained priests to teach the people. He told the priests to teach repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. He also said they must not argue but be united.
  • Slide 15
  • Almas people loved and served one another. They shared everything they had and were grateful to have learned about Jesus Christ, their Redeemer.
  • Slide 16
  • King Noahs servants saw Alma teaching the people. The king said Alma was turning the Nephites against him, so he sent an army to kill them.
  • Slide 17
  • God warned Alma that King Noahs army was coming. The people gathered their families, animals, and other belongings and fled into the wilderness.
  • Slide 18
  • God strengthened Almas people so they could escape from King Noahs army. The army searched but never found them.
  • Slide 19
  • After traveling in the wilderness for eight days, Almas people came to a beautiful area that had pure water flowing through it. Here they planted crops and built buildings.
  • Slide 20
  • The people wanted Alma to be their king, but Alma said God did not want them to have a king. God wanted them to be free.

  • Hold your arm out straight. Hold this book with your hand while the rest of us discuss baptismal covenants. Is your arm getting tired? I need another volunteer to hold up the arm of the first volunteer. Enr. Act. 1

  • One of the promises we make when we are baptized is to bear one anothers burdens, that they may be light. What are some burdens children your age might feel, such as being made fun of, being sick, having problems with family members, wanting to belong, or having difficulties in school. Ask the children how they can help make each others burdens lighter. Enr. Act. 1
  • Slide 33
  • I know about an act of service someone in this room did for someone else. I know of someone else in this room who served someone else, too. These acts of service have made the burden lighter for those you served. Enr. Act. 2
  • Slide 34
  • Part of the covenant we made when we were baptized was to be willing to take the name of Jesus Christ upon us and become a true Christian, or follower of Christ. Enr. Act. 3 We must live worthy of his name.
  • Slide 35
  • Think about how well you are honoring the name of Jesus Christ as we learn of the following story from President George Albert Smith, the eighth President of the Church: Enr. Act. 3

  • A number of years ago I was seriously ill. I became so weak as to scarcely be able to move. One day I lost consciousness of my surroundings and I thought I had passed to the Other Side. Enr. Act. 3

  • I began to explore and after I had walked for some time through the forest, I saw a man coming towards me. I became aware that he was a very large man, and I hurried my steps to reach him, because I recognized him as my grandfather. I remember how glad I was to see him coming. I had been given his name and had always been proud of it.
  • Slide 38
  • When Grandfather came within a few feet of me, he stopped. He looked at me very earnestly and said: I would like to know what you have done with my name. Everything I had ever done passed before me as though it were a flying picture on a screen. My whole life had passed before me. I smiled and looked at my grandfather and said:

  • He stepped forward and took me in his arms, and as he did so, I became conscious again of my earthly surroundings. My pillow was as wet as though water had been poured on it wet with tears of gratitude that I could answer unashamed (Your Good Name, Improvement Era, Mar. 1947, p. 139).
