Our Mission: Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, rooted in the spirituality of St. Ignatius, Jesuit Retreat House provides a sacred setting for outreach, retreats and programs of growth and development for people in the contem-porary Church and society.

September 2014 Dear Friend of Jesuit Retreat House,

I write this first letter to our Jesuit Retreat House community and friends with deep gratitude for having the opportunity to serve as the new Executive Director beginning July 1. My personal journey of prayer and discernment leading to this inspiring new turn in my life has been blessed with a profound sense of feeling my life in God’s hands, and the belief that this role is truly the best use of my gifts in this phase of my life. I am ever-inspired by the First Principle and Foundation of Ignatius, and the core image of “Finding God in all things.” I want to do all that I can to serve people individually and communally in ways that bring the gift of Ignatian

spirituality more deeply into their lives.

My 8-day silent directed retreat in June was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I discovered a depth of presence with God unlike any time in my life. The Spiritual Exercises brought forth an experience of God’s love and the life of Christ in a deeply moving and inspiring way. I have come away so wanting to find the right words and images that could inspire others to understand and make the time for such a life-giving gift. In pondering the words of Christ in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest,” I am struck by the need for each of us to take the first step, to come, to make time, to say Yes! A retreat can be a wonderful way for these words to be fulfilled. – whether it be for a weekend, a few days, 8 days. Even from an economic standpoint, it is one of the best values in the world – as well as a life-changing experience.

I am honored to build on the legacy and love of Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, SC for the mission and ministry of JRH. We each found much joy in the transition as well as a commitment to sustain an ongoing relationship. Sr. Mary Ann will continue to do the retreats, programs and spiritual direction she loves to do at JRH.

During my four-month transition process and my first month as Executive Director, I have listened to many people sharing the history and stories of JRH. I am very impressed by what I have seen and heard about the powerful ways in which God's grace and blessings are present in the lives of people we serve through the retreats and programs that are core strengths of JRH.

In this newsletter you will see the beginning of a new collaboration with Heart to Heart Communications based in Akron, being developed with Fr. Norm Douglas, Larry Vuillemin and Tony Vento. Since 1990, over 30,000 persons have attended their programs in corporate and community settings, with a focus on the connection between the individual’s inner development and the vitality of every workplace.

I also hope to build new opportunities for collaborating with our JRH friends and the wider community in creating retreats, programs and conversations that can make a life-giving difference in people’s lives, centered in “Finding God in all things.” Please feel free to contact me with your ideas and possibilities.

5:30 p.m. Refreshments 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Program Cost:$20

This event is designed for people in various workplace settings. It is being done in collaboration with the Organizational Development (OD) Connection, a professional development organization in Northeast Ohio promoting effective practices and philosophies in leadership and organizational life. The session will be led by Fr. Norm Douglas and Larry Vuillemin, co-founders of Heart to Heart Communications based in Akron (http://www.h2hc.org). Since 1990, over 30,000 persons have attended their programs in corporate and community settings, with a focus on the connection between the individual’s inner and interpersonal development and the vitality and success of every workplace. This session will discover and draw upon the inner resources and outer practices which facilitate lifelong renewal of the human spirit. It will address the sources of negativity and imbalance in daily life and work, and present ways to move yourself and your organization toward a more positive, solutions-oriented, and resilient approach. Given the significance of 9/11, Fr. Norm will also share insights from his participation in commemorative events at the national memorial for Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA.

JRH was very pleased to have a visit this summer from Fr. Cap Miller, S.J. Fr. Miller is a 1951 graduate of St. Ignatius High School. He took his senior year retreat at JRH and recalls how on this retreat he was inspired by the witness and presence of the older Jesuit Brothers. As a result of experiencing their peaceful and joyful demeanor, he was inspired to join the Jesuit Order. Since his ordination in 1958 he has served in Nepal first as a teacher and currently in Formation Work.

YouCan teaches faith-based leadership lessons to emerging leaders from Benedictine High School at the Jesuit Retreat House What are the characteristics of good leaders? What do Jesus and Saints teach us about the importance of leadership? Does God call us to be great? These are a few of the questions that Fr. Matt Roche,SJ (JRH) Brian Dean and Paul Koopman (YouCan) discussed with student leaders from Benedictine High School. “Fr. Matt, Paul and I enjoyed leading a faith and fun-filled day with these fine young leaders.” - Brian Dean. Modules included discussions about the importance of character and communication with how St. Benedict and St. Ignatius used inner discipline and guidance from God to found the Benedictine and Jesuit orders. Fr. Matt discussed how using a daily prayer form, the Examen, could aid these young leaders. Funding for the Youth Leadership retreats was made possible by the generous support of the Raskob Foundation For Catholic Activities, Inc.

Presented by Margaret Balewski Cost:$30

How often do you try to notice God in your life? Do you want more quiet time to reacquaint yourself with God? Join us for a day of discovering and rediscovering God’s boundless love for you. The retreat day is intended to allow you to experience God in quiet places. It will include input sessions followed by silent prayer times to talk with and listen for God.

In addition to the luncheon period, there will be the option for time to share your experiences of prayer with others or to continue this rich time of quiet. December 31 - January 1 New Years’s Eve Retreat: Hope is the Now

Presented by Patrick & Jeannie Cleary-Burns Cost:$90

Hope. In these tumultuous times, it is often obscured. We will use the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and St. Ignatius to find hope by grounding ourselves in the ‘now’. New Year’s Eve presents a terrific opportunity. Calling on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will use Ignatius’ Examen and a variety of the sources of revelation – scripture, quiet, our imaginations, the world around us, and each other – to look back to see the many graces we received in this turbulent year and look ahead to living thankfully in 2015. Retreat starts with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and concludes at 11:00 a.m.

December 13 Building a Vision for Retirement:

The Advent of the Next Chapter of Life 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Presented by Fr. Norm Douglas & Rick Krivanka

Cost:$40

What will the retirement years be like? Can it be a time that is life-giving and hope-filled? This day will provide an interactive session for individuals looking ahead to, or already in, retirement. It will explore the different aspects of one’s life and build the foundation for a vital spirituality and a meaningful and purposeful way of living after 60… or whenever! This session will be co-led by Fr. Norm Douglas, co-founder of Heart to Heart Communications and Rick Krivanka, Executive Director of Jesuit Retreat House.

Neil and Joe met one another in Neil’s work as a spiritual advisor to the men on Ohio’s Death Row and how he pleaded with him to investigate his case and claims of innocence. Then we talk about the evidence of his innocence that was discovered and the many obstacles to presenting that evidence in court. Obstacles that came to us via the prosecutors office, the police department and the coroner. The case eventually made its way through the United States Supreme Court and Joe was exonerated after 22 years on Death Row in January of 2012. Midday prayer starts at 11:30 followed by lunch and the speaker. Program concludes by 1:30.

In Loving Memory

Each month we remember our benefactors with Mass. In a special way we remember our friends who have gone home to the Lord.

We remember and pray for Peter Blaszak, Rosemarie DeGrandis, Bill Tanner and Arthur R. FitzGerald. Please let us know when you lose a loved one, and we will add them to our Mass intentions.

Eco-spiritualty Retreat for Youth The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland have generously provided grant funding for a group of students and Campus Ministry leaders from Saint Martin de Porres High School to participate this October in an Eco-Spirituality retreat. The collaborative program will be facilitated by Sr. Barbara O’Donnell, HM with the planning assistance of Steve Suding and Emily Klein McFadden from Saint Martin de Porres H.S. The students will experience a day visit to the Dominican Sisters of Peace farm at the Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath, Ohio and return to JRH for an evening of prayer, overnight stay, and second retreat day.
