NewsWorthyUnconditional Surrender statue on its way to New Jersey

Sarasota’s landmark statue that was hit by a car last week, ‘Unconditional Surrender’ was placed on two semi-trucks and hauled away this week. The statue’s foot is cracked and needs to be repaired, so it was shipped to the original artist in New Jersey who can repair it. The statue is expected to arrive back in Sarasota late this summer when it will be installed in the same location. The person who struck the statue was not charged or ticketed and the crash was attributed to having a reaction to medication.

Sarasota anchoring feedback requestedThe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is requesting public com-

ment on the proposed anchoring in Sarasota for a legislatively directed anchoring and mooring pilot program. The goal is to explore potential options for regulating the anchoring or mooring of non-liveaboard vessels outside the boundaries of public mooring fields.

Local governments for each participant site is responsible for soliciting public com-ment for its ordinance development process. Sarasota held public meetings to gather suggestions and information about local problems related to anchoring and mooring. The public is asked to provide comments through May 16.

Details of Sarasota ordinance:FWC is posting the proposed Sarasota ordinance to collect public comment specific

to the ordinance. This is an opportunity to review and provide comments on this ordinance. The ordinance will be posted for comment until Midnight on May 16, 2012.

The next step is FWC Boating and Waterways Staff will present the ordinance to the Commission. The ordinance will take effect and become enforceable only after approval by the Commission. The pilot program will expire on July 1, 2014, unless reenacted by the Legislature. The ordinance will be posted for comment until Midnight on May 16, 2012.

New, mural takes shot at city leaders and ‘Tube Dude’The French spray-paint artist known as MTO who painted the “Fast Life” mural

on the build-ing owned by Scott Gerber and his ‘Tube Dude’ business, has now painted another mural on the Sarasota Arch i t ec tu ra l Salvage building. Gerber received admonishment from the City of Sarasota to remove the mural, and subsequent ly, Gerber painted over the mural. Now, MTO has painted a mural with a doctor wearing sunglasses and a stethoscope and in the glasses are the images of ‘Tube Dudes’ with dollar signs in their eyes. The name tag on the doctor states, “Dr. Robin: Specialist for leaders and hat-ers, bull----, crisis. City of Sarasota.”

The owner of Sarasota Architectural Salvage, Jesse White, has stated that he was not aware that the final artwork would have the profane language or the images of tube dudes in it. White is not sure yet what he will do about the artwork, but for now he will leave it on the side of his building.
