a brief introduction

there are many buzzwords floating around the design community today. Surely, you’ve been inundated with references to sustainability, green design, eco chic, cradle to cradle, thoughtful design, holistic design, life cycle design. though

some of the words may be new, they all point to the old idea that a designer’s responsibility is to solve problems in a sensible and pragmatic way. this responsibility extends to the user, to the environment and the bottom line. among

many convictions and passions, this one of the strongest as it guides the choices I make as a designer.

how and why we print is usually temporary and wasteful

objective: design a more sustainable personal use ink-jet printerboth the manufacturing practice and the business model that has enabled cheap at-home printing have been allowed to run rampant. cheap printers, expensive ink and wasteful printing habits all combine to make a monstrous problem. the solution cannot address just one aspect of the system. its time to clean house!

market research: the typical printerto understand the impact a typical printer has, a $30 model was purchased and disassembled. nearly every component inside could be categorized as a monsterous-hybrid. typical of most modern consumer goods, a variety of non-recyclable and impossible to separate materials are used to make the packaging and even the inner most components. this printer has more than 170 individual parts.

research: inside the problemthe sheer complexity of a inexpensive printer is astounding. there is no way this printer could ever be disassembled for recycling! the printer is a mixture of more than 6 types of plastic, several kinds of metal and even more unidentifiable materials.

goal: improve

a good amount of the complicated system relates to moving paper, lets make it better!

ink supply

goal: improve

ink cartridges are complex and wasteful, why not a reservoir system?

controller

goal: improve

this is the printer’s brain, why not make it a little smarter?

paper supply

goal: improve

we waste a lot of paper, lets see if we can figure out a better way to do things here too!

print head

goal: improve

this is where quality really counts. rather than skimping, lets use a very high and print head that can be returned to the manufacture?

power supply

goal: eliminate

one more power adapter in a landfill somewhere no more. share the power with an other peripheral!

interface

goal: eliminate

no two inch lcd screen will ever trump your fancy flat panel computer display so why are we still trying to fight it?

anatomy lesson: what do we still need?broken down into components, the typical printer is not all that complicated. ink, paper, some gears and motors and a few computer chips are all that we need. judging from our disassembled printer though, we have a tendency of over engineering these devices with no plan to ever accept responsibility for their full life cycle.

“why are we still relying on an old mentality and technology from the nineties?”

Page 10: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

envisioning solutions: generating conceptsexploring a variety of technologies was the first step toward a solution. e-ink, continuous feed printing, shared mechanisms, volatile inks, printing as a service concepts and shared power were all considered. more than any other project, a part of almost every concept made it into the final design..

ink: quality in - quality outink is obviously the most important aspect of a printer, without it, there are no prints. we can improve this system without sacrificing performance. high quality ink can be delivered in a smarter package that empties into a reservoir to eliminate complex cartridge design. a disappearing ink can provide temporary prints while an ink- recapture system can make prints out of wasted ink.

Page 15: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

c m y k + v: now you see it, now you don’tTaking an ingredient from high school chemistry class (thymophthalein) we can create an ink with controlled volatility. non-essential documents like directions can be printed to only last a few days. once gone, the paper can be used again for printing or as scrap.

Page 16: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

ink: cutting down the wastewe already know that packaging accounts for 50% of all residential landfill material, so lets get rid of it. a rigid starch shell merchandises well and prevents theft as it displays the ink color. an inner pouch made of PET plastic can be recycled with your water bottles. the second idea is to recapture some of the wasted ink and use it for non-essential printing. why use good ink on something we will throw away in a day?

Ink Reservoireach ink cartridge is made from a municipally recyclable PET pouch and a high density starch shell. one the ink is consumed, the starch shell dissolves in your sink and the pouch can be thrown in with regular curb side recycling.

Recapturing Waste Inkthroughout normal printer operation, a lot of ink is wasted to clean the print head. recapturing this ink can provide a source of ink for non-essential documents that don’t have to be printed in full brilliant color.

eliminating the obsolete: does anyone actually use CDs and manuals?manuals use paper and CDs contain toxic chemicals. lets put all the manuals and drivers in the built-in flash memory inside the printer. for initial setup, we don’t need booklets, lets make an in-mold graphic that requires no ink and generates zero extra scrap material.

primary objective: identify a common household problema little incentive goes a long way. an online survey promising $20 gift card got the attention of more than 150 participants who generated more than 50 pages of write-in responses to questions regarding common household headaches. the lucky winner of the gift card chose to spend it on sushi.

secondary objective: analyze responses for common themespouring over the insightful survey took more than a week but a trend quickly emerged. while most people hated some kind of chore, nearly everyone hated cleaning up messes in the kitchen. more astonishing was how often people would sacrifice a home cooked meal because they didn’t want to clean up. how sad!

food: how it looks in our mindswhen you close your eyes and think about food, you probably see something like this: a nicely plated dish complete with garnish and a linen napkin. maybe we get this image from commercials, restaurant dining or the shiny boxes we see at the supermarket. unfortunately food that looks like this is hard to prepare so we often don’t go through the trouble and sacrifice our desires and worse, our nutrition.

mess: where does it comes from?it seems like a very simple question but finding a common source shared by all kinds of messes proved rather tricky. to help, a series of routine kitchen activities were traced (one is outlined above). the steps quickly show that even a simple task is a lot more complicated and involved than it seems. yet the picture quickly reveals that most mess occurs when food travels - either between locations or vessels.

Mess is generally made when ingredients are transferred either around the kitchen or from vessel to vessel.

culprit a

First, when we use any kitchen, we are bound by it’s layout. Most kitchens are laid out to separate the sink, cooking surface and refrigerator. We’re not even talking about the pantry, cabinets or the trash can. Each time any object travels leaves a flat surface and travels across the kitchen is a potential for mess.

culprit b

The second problem that contributes to creating a mess is the number of times we transfer ingredients. Even cooking a simple meal involves transferring several ingredients from vessel to vessel. Each used vessel is something else to clean. Each transfer increases your chances of creating a mess. Before you know it, you’ve used 3 pots and pans to cook breakfast.

mess: who’s to blame?much like the qwerty keyboard which was designed to slow the user from typing too fast, the modern kitchen is built around a principle that separates key functions. the second problem comes from having to transfer ingredients from vessel to vessel too many times. we seldom cook in an intermediary container. so no wonder we use four bowls to mix eggs.

Page 26: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

ground rules: lets prevent the problems we’re trying to fixit’s safe to say that most products on the market were created with a good intentions - yet our gadget drawers are overflowing with junk and our kitchens are still messy. to stay on track, a list of key principles and design features was made. at no point was any of these guidelines violated throughout the design process.

Page 27: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

research: out in the marketthere is no shortage of gadgets and toys that promise to make your life in the kitchen easier yet no single gadget has managed to replace the rest.

Page 28: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013
Page 29: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

direction: focus on the intersection of prep and transfersince most of the mess occurs when food is transferred, a solution aimed at making this transfer easier is most likely to have a positive impact.

Page 30: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

forms and materials: exploring initial form concepts and material choices in the hopes that simpler is truly better, the first round of ideas revolved around folding cutting board devices that help transfer ingredients from the work area to the cooking surface. though valuable, none were without their own limitations which reduced their effectiveness. on the materials front, choices were evaluated based on utility and honesty - a scale that measures function against the wholesome nature of the material.

materials: its all in the substancesmaterial choice is always an important consideration. this is especially true for the bento prep kit. the requirements demanded durable, nonporous , eco friendly materials that could stand the test of time.

Page 32: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

version one: humble beginningsthe idea to create a system of several smaller vessels contained within one larger one quickly emerged as a favorite. this format allowed for maximum versatility. food could be prepared and distributed from one source. the cutting board was an extension of this idea since it could be picked, folded and carried to it’s destination. still, the idea needed further refinement.

Page 33: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

material epiphany: hybrid ceramic finishpreparing food often means working with wet hands. wet hands and slick surfaces don’t usually mix well. the beautiful thing about vitreous ceramic is that it doesn’t have to be glossy to be water tight. leaving the bottom of each vessel unglazed gives it a grippy surface that your hands can hold onto - even when wet.

the idea takes shape: bento prep kitthe final refinement features a system of four vessels that store in a larger casserole style dish that integrates with a cutting board that channels away liquids from whatever the user cuts. the cutting board has a silicone joint that allows it to flex for easy funneling of ingredients. the base of each vessel is unglazed for easy grip and all six components store together in one small form.

Page 44: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

furniture: a designer’s dreamthe first day I thought about pursuing an education in design is the day I also thought about designing a piece of furniture - after all, every great designer has left his or her mark in the form of a chair, lamp or table. furniture is likely the most practical kind of art that anyone can have in their home. the best part is that when you do bring it home, you don’t need to put it in a glass case (unless you want to).

Page 45: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

objective: start simple and work from thereinspired by classic mid-century design, I started by braking the chair down to basic components. once the function of the chair is broken down the seat and back rest are re-connected using one continuous line. this line creates a great visual tension when it stops short of re-connecting with itself.

Page 46: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

quick form exploration: before a single piece of wood is cutlong before a saw touched a single piece of wood, a simple 3D model was created to aid in the refinement of the design. from this study I could see that the visual tension I intended was working exactly as I hoped but the chair proportions, specifically the width, were not quite right yet. after some tweaks and more ergonomics research the modified chair was placed in a room setting for final inspection before real work can begin.

Page 47: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

process: also known as trial and errorbecause so much goes into each piece of furniture, the process is long and involves many setbacks. ergonomics are just the start. picking materials that are suitable for the project proved difficult. I knew I wanted to use plywood turned on it’s side but even at two inch thick this was not sturdy enough. thankfully, a problem turned into an opportunity and a piece of quarter-inch steel was laster-cut. it added strength and beauty in the end.

Page 48: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

materials: a process of eliminationconfronted with a myriad of material options, wood remains the most appealing and inviting material. plywood offers superior strength and can be made using sustainable practices. laser cut steel provides additional support and a pleasant material break in the form. in the end, what I really wanted to do is use plywood ‘the wrong way.’ I wanted to use plywood’s layers as the primary surface, not as a hidden detail.

Page 49: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

construction: staying true to the notion of simplicitythe G-Chair is a robust piece of furniture made of wonderfully rich materials. as such, if it were shipped fully assembled, it’s container would be filled mostly with air. with a little planning all components break apart quickly and assemble easily using conventional fasteners and special tools. as an extra bonus, the seat and back rest are made from the left over material cut out of the profile shapes. the g chair is 100% flat pack friendly!

Page 50: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

recognition: honor and privilegeits one thing to design something that pleases you but another thing all together when your work is recognized by someone else. the g chair was a finalist in the billes products 2009 furniture design competition held in new orleans, la. the competition was held at the new orleans design within reach store. the designs were held on display at the store for a couple of days.

Page 54: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

market research: competitive landscape + user profilingsurveys quickly point to the cache associated with the BOSE name. while many competitors exist, they simply do not enjoy the same kind of recognition. BOSE is almost universally accepted as a producer of high quality technologically advanced premium audio equipment.

Page 55: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

conclusions: bose has the cake and its eating it tooover many years, BOSE managed to combine a kind of cult appeal that is mostly common to high end obscure brands with the mass appeal of commodity brands. this puts the brand in a uniquely advantageous position to easily expand it’s line to include new products.

Page 56: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

primary objective: brand refreshwhile the brand doesn’t exactly lack power, time has come for a refresh. working with Communication Design, the BOSE logo was carefully updated to reflect a more modern sensibility. using market research, the team identified two new categories for BOSE to expand it’s products into: a line of portable and wellness products that use the technology that BOSE is already famous for.

borrowing from the past to renew

projecting into the future

the BOSE brand carried with it a highly respected heritage of quality and technological prowess. how can we borrow from it?

market research indicates that BOSE’s portfolio does not include as many products in the portable and wellness category as consumers would like to see.

BOSE Portable: as the population becomes more mobile consumers are looking for audio solutions that follow them

BOSE Wellness: how can BOSE leverage it’s technological expertise to expand into the wellness category?

secondary objective: redefine brand languagethroughout the years, some of BOSE’s form language has become a little muddy. starting from scratch, the group looked for inspiration from several markets. the result is a hybrid of soft and hard - modern but warm. never boxy, never fully organic - the new form language will carefully negotiate these two opposites to create forms that are appealing to the eye and to the touch.

Page 58: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

idea: if you could carry sound, what would you carry it in?can you carry a tune? seriously. designing for the new BOSE Portable brand meant exploring the notion of portability as it relates to sound. the notion of a vessel to ‘contain’ sound slowly emerged - but what would this vessel look like? what would it be made of? would the reference be literal or abstract?

Page 59: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

ideation: what will carry the sound?pursuing the idea of a vessel to ‘carry sound,’ several forms were explored. if the object is to be truly seen as a vessel it will need a handle and a stable base. it should transport easily. reflecting on the newly designed form language, the idea of a soft geometric vase with a handle was ready for refinement

primary objective: design an enclosure for STERIS’ next gen video processorSTERIS was developing a new video processor capable of converting and routing a myriad of signals to different monitors in the operating room. the challenge was to design a versatile housing enclosure for this device - housing that mounts, is easy to service, is insusceptible to spills and is highly ventilated. did I mention it has to hold what you see in this picture?

Page 75: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

ideation: ventilation was key during the early phase of ideation. other considerations included accessibility and mounting options.

VS-1 Style Guide

outcome: comprehensive style guideafter several trips to meet the vendor who will make the device, a visual and functional style guide was developed. working closely with engineers and marketing, the housing was to be a simple, gentle form that was highly capable of being mounted on nearly anything and could stand up to the abuse of the operating rom.

Page 77: JerzyGlicaPortfolio2013

The prevalent idea behind the exterior is to make the panels attach to the underlying space frame. The illustration shown here is an extreme example of this concept. Several sides can be joined to form less parts. These ideas will be explored further in this guide.

construction concept (cont.)

The simplest concept for mounting the VS-1 to nearly any surface would be to employ a U-Bracket that anchors directly to the space-frame through the exterior panels. The exterior panels gain addi-tional stability in this configuration.

The design does become slightly obscured when using this meth-od, however, this effect can be offset by following some of the basic guidelines outlined for the general body design. The radius in the bracket should match the back of the VS-1 enclosure. The metal used to make the bracket should be finished carefully to prevent an industrial look. The corners should be gently beveled and when possible, the material should be painted / coated to match the grey, blue or off-white.

Additionally, when mounted using this method, the VS-1 is already likely to be obscured by wither a drawer, boom components or a counter top.

Pro: This method needs much less segmentation of the body.

Con: Not considered carefully, this option can steal from the design.

u-brackets

1 2

3 4 5

The most discrete method of mounting the VS-1 to a variety of surfaces is incorporate a discrete slot at the top and back to accommodate two or more hidden brackets. When not in use, the brackets would live un-derneath the exterior panels, which are likely attached to the space frame. The panes would be removed and so would the brackets. The brackets would then be re-attached so they extended outward.

1: When not used, only a discrete slot would be noticeable. This could be a knock-out.2: Inside, the brackets would mount onto the space frame3: To mount under a desk, the brackets would extend outward4: To mount under drawer, the brackets would extend upward5: The same slots / knock-outs would be on the rear of the body for boom mounting.

highlights: a great two year stint designing candles for target storesfew experiences rival my time with Pacific Trade International where I was the lead designer for the Target Stores account. not only was the responsibility huge (we’re talking millions and millions of dollars here), but it was probably one of the most exciting ventures I’ve ever embarked on. here are some highlights.

colorology: warm collection just as cool colors calm us, vibrant warm colors excite. red is the color of passion and love. orange is dynamic and surprising. yellow is playful, joyous and filled with youthful glee.

high fragrance collection: spice market inspired by faraway lands, the spice market collection features exotic scents and bold graphics. richly colored glass vessels were wrapped in ornate packaging that featured humble embellishments.

the high fragrance collection was at the time Target’s boldest venture in this department. at it’s height, this program occupied sixteen feet of horizontal space and required the coordination of more than a dozen vendors - all of which used our original packaging design. the first round of this program generated more than 25 million dollars in retail business.
