Welcome:

Pres Paul Roger welcomed everyone to meeting 788 and welcomed our

guest speaker, Martin Fisk and Stephen Mulvaney, who is visiting from

Jalbarragup, south of Perth WA.

Pres Paul invited Anne Davis to recite the Charge to Australia and Sue

Jarvis gave the toast to Rotary International.

Apologies: Well this is becoming a habit; the acting/acting Attendance Officer also failed to

send me the apologies, so thanks to Dizz, here are the members who were at the

meeting!! Paul Roger, David Bailey, Alex, Vera, Chilli, Paul Robey, Colin, Terry,

Kerry, Cathy, Anne, Peter, Sue, Jan and Sue Roger and of course Lizzie, who stood

my boy’s 18th

Birthday.

GUEST SPEAKER – Martin Fisk Menslink

Menslink has been supporting young men in the Canberra region for over ten years through their

free counselling, volunteer mentoring and schools’ programs. In that time they’ve helped thousands

of young guys get through tough or lonely times and develop into responsible, productive and

contributing adult men. Their charity aims to help young men achieve their full potential, because

they believe everything is possible for them, their families and our community.

Martin presented the following information:

Men are scared and embarrassed to talk about their feelings, there is an unwritten

code;

Aimed at young guys between 12-25;

Brumbies have sponsored the program – Silence is Deadly. As the name implies;

keeping things bottled up has dire consequences;

There are monthly activities;

There is a counselling service provided;

They teach critical life skills early; before it’s too late.

The results are:

Young guys are reaching out;

An increase of 130% of kids asking for help.

The cost of a 2 year program is less than $5000.00 and Counselling is less than $1000.00;

o All their services are free to young blokes and their families,

o The ACT Govt Funds approx 70%

o The rest is through fundraising.

What can we do?

Fundraising and donations;

Volunteering your time;

Women can help out at fundraising events.

Chilli thanked our speaker for an informative talk and presented him with a book to donate back to

the Jerra Public School in his name.

Jerraganda business:

From the Desk of the President:

President Paul thanked Chris Hunter for standing in in his absence last week. Paul

also thanked Paul Robey for his assistance in completing the final aspects of the

Renal Unit Garden on Wednesday with the installation of a 90 metre water dripper

system and the completion of the last two bench tops on the sleeper wall. Pres Paul

also advised that the two Paul’s had fun assembling the new BBQ the Renal Unit had

acquired. Interpreting the ‘picture only’ instructions was a challenge, but successfully

completed with no bits left over !!

President Paul reminded members that the Renal Unit staff were putting on a BBQ on Easter

Sunday to thank the three Rotary clubs for the creation of the Garden (now known as the Rotary

Garden). Paul, Sue and Jan are attending and about 15 Rotarians from the other two clubs are also

attending.

President Paul advised that the commitment to the Mega Swim was preventing any members

attending the District Assembly at Bega. As there is an SGM at the Assembly, arrangements are

being made for our AG, Lynne Duckham, to be our delegate for voting purposes at the SGM. The

SGM agenda will be discussed under general business to gain the members views in order to

instruct Lynne on our voting position.

Pres Paul also reminded members of the District lunch function on Saturday 19 April as part of the

World’s Greatest Meal to end Polio. Paul and Sue are attending and Paul will be presenting a

cheque for $1000 on behalf of the club towards Polio Plus campaign.

President Paul also noted that as of last Monday (14th) the local bank now has a new manager

(Rebecca). The other Rebecca (who we all know so well) will now be known as Bec to avoid

confusion. The new Manager is keen to associate with Rotary and hopes to come along to next

week’s meeting.

OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentor (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 20 members. We are an unusual club as we have a very high proportion of female Members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years. We now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). As at 26 Jan 2014 the Club has 26 members — 11 female and 15 male. Included in this are seven married couples. We also have 4 supporters of the Rotary Club.

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club bulletin and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and (very) bad suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name; Jerraganda. The banner design by David Stevens was eventually selected. The design incorporates a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate.

I intend to live forever.

So far, so good.
