This year-long online writing course takes you from novel concept,through to publication – with expert support and guidance every step of the way.

Philip WomackChildren’s author with a love for myths in literaturePhilip Womack is the author of seven critically acclaimed fantasy books for children. His first work of non-fiction, How to Teach Classics to Your Dog, will be published in October 2020,a lively guide to the world and literature of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. He also reviews for national newspapers, including the Times Literary Supplement and Literary Review.

He’s has been an editor and mentor at Jericho Writers for many years and has taught Creative Writing at both BA and MA level. He enjoys getting to grips with students’ workand helping them to understand the techniques and skills they can employ to maximise their potential. Consistent, thoughtful feedback is all important, and he aims to support and challenge writers to be the best that they can be.

Philip enjoys Children’s books, YA, literary fiction, fantasy, sci-fi & literary biography.

Helen FrancisFaber & Faber editor, literary agent & book scoutHelen Francis has worked in publishing for nearly twenty years in both publishing housesand literary agencies. Previously, Helen was a fiction project editor at Faber and Faber for eight years, and a commissioning fiction editor at Head of Zeus for two. She also ran the Classicslist at Vintage, Penguin Random House, and was a freelance commissioning editor forArcadia Books.

Helen has also worked at literary agencies Abner Stein Associates and MBB Creative, and has worked as an international book scout for many years. Helen has taught creative writing and editing at Bath Spa University and is a Jericho Writers editor.

Helen loves contemporary, women’s fiction, literary, crime, YA fiction,amongst a long list of genres!

Lindsey AlexanderEditor at HarperCollins US & acclaimed book coach

Lindsey Alexander was an editor at HarperCollins US for 15 years, collaborating on New York Times best-sellers, multiple award winners and international successes. These days, she helps both veteran and first-time authors across genres achieve their writing and publishing goals. In addition to her work as an editor and book coach, Lindsey has taught writing through the

New School University, where she taught under the guidance of National Book Award winner Sigrid Nunez; San Francisco’s Writing Salon; Rutgers University’s One-on-One

Plus Conference; and elsewhere.

Among Lindsey’s favourite genres are middle-grade/young adult,romance, mystery/thriller, literary fiction, and humour.

Wes BrownLecturer & narrative non-fiction PhD candidate

Wes Brown is a writer, editor and researcher with a background in the publishing industry and many years' experience of teaching creative writing. He’s published novels, short stories,

reviews and poems, and is currently writing an auto-fiction about his time as a pro-wrestler. Wes has taught Creative Writing at the University of Kent, the University of East London and

the City Lit and he’s also been awarded a CHASE PhD scholarship to research Narrative Non-Fiction. Wes strongly believes in working with authors to achieve their

own artistic ideals rather than project his own.

Wes loves non-fiction narratives, memoirs, contemporary fiction and YA.

Your year at a glanceEach month will include a one-to-one feedback session with your mentor & tutorial-basedexercises open to mentor and peer-feedback.

October : Planning Your NovelIt’s important to ensure a sense of structure and plot before writing your novel. This month, we’ll learn how to plan and structure your novel and put this into action for your own work.

Outcome: Perfect your pitch, get to grip with your plot and make sure you have a sound structure.

Bonus: Introductory video call with tutors and course members.

November : Point of ViewHow is your novel told? Have you thought about trying out different perspectives, different viewpoints? We’ll look at all the different kinds of point of view from omniscient; to third person limited; to first person and see how they can inform our own work.

Outcome: Through learning the benefits and experimenting with different points of view, you'll perfect your narrator's voice to enhance and enrich your novel.

December : SettingIt's time to start writing your novel. This month, we'll look at how you can maximize the potential of your setting, whether it’s a colony on Mars, or a suburban sitting room.

Outcome: Through understanding the importance of setting, you’ll improve your novel’s detail, giving your text weight, authority and atmosphere.

Bonus: Join your course-mates for your first writing sprint in our closed community group, Townhouse.

January : Character Alongside time to write, we’ll learn the techniques and tools we can use to strengthen and develop our characters, and how you can ensure that their development links closely to the plot.

Outcome: By the end of the month, you’ll have the tools to create three-dimensional character that your readers will fall in love with (or hate, if they’re your antagonist!).

February : Emotion and SensesStudy the art of transferring weight of emotion onto objects and atmosphere. We’ll be looking at short sections of your writing, and how to apply the technique throughout your manuscript.

Outcome: This month will include close paragraph work that will guide you through expressing senses and emotions through your writing.

Bonus: Guest tutor session: Using your senses when writing, with Aisha Bushby.

March : Pacing and Tension How do you keep your reader engaged? We’ll discover the importance of building tension, no matter the genre.

Outcome: This month, you’ll look at how events and situations can be engineered to leave your readers wanting more.

Bonus: This month, you’ll get the chance to meet your fellow course mates at either the Getting Published Day or Self-Publishing Day in London (your choice). This will be your first opportunity to network with industry professionals.

April : Voice and StyleThis is what can really set your work apart from the rest. A well-developed style is like a fingerprint: what can you doto practice yours, and to make it flow?

Outcome: You’ll gain the tools to develop your own style and ensure that the voices in your novel are convincing and relatable.

Bonus: Writing sprint with your classmates on our closed community group, Townhouse.

May : Making a Great Ending By now, you’ll have a working manuscript and be aware of all the techniques that shape your world. But does it work? We’ll look closely at the plausibility and credibility of your work.

Outcome: Read through what you’ve got so far and learn how to tie everything together with a credible ending.

Bonus: Close work on perfecting your ending.

June : Self-EditingThis month, we’ll look at your manuscript in its entirety and learn how to turn that first draft into a masterpiece.

Outcome: Through self-editing tips and tricks, you’ll learn how to always view your work with a critical eye. Bonus: A full-manuscript assessment. Our editors will read, digest and absorb your work, then tell you how to improve it with a 3,000 word report.

July : Getting Published Through detailed tutorials, we’ll learn the art of perfecting your submission package and find the best agents for your work.

Outcome: By the end of the month, you will have built a strong shortlist of literary agents and have a query letter and synopsis ready to go.

Bonus: Guest event: Slushpile live with selected literary agents.

Put your pitch to the test in front of a panel of literary agents. They’ll read a short extract from your work or submission package and give feedback for the roomto hear.

August : Author-led Marketing and Self-Publishing Learn the core tools of self-publishing – which also form the basis for any author-led marketing campaign.

Outcome: By the end of this module, you’ll know what it takes to successfully self-publish your work.

If for any reason we think the course isn’t right for you, we will be happy to discuss what alternatives might be more suitable. We’ll give you a reply in two weeks' time.
