Gone Girl If you’ve read the book by Gillian Flynn, the movie actually does it justice and it’s definitely worth watching! If you haven’t read the book, even better! You won’t have all the surprises of this disturbing story ruined for you and can fully immerse yourself in the treachery of the characters in Gone Girl.

In brief, Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy (Rosamund Pike) have a tumultuous marriage. When Nick returns home one day and finds that Amy is missing, things get… a little weird. Lies and deceit are revealed in this film riddled with plot twists and conspiracy.

Mulholland Drive This movie should really be on everyone’s list of movies to watch before you die. Written and directed by David Lynch, this dark, mysterious, and sometimes comedic film is both a psychological thriller and a neo-noir mystery.

The story centers around Betty (Naomi Watts), an aspiring actress, new to LA who encounters a woman suffering from amnesia (Laura Harring) and tries to help her find out who she is. The film also involves other vignettes, seemingly unrelated to Watts’ and Harring’s story line. However, as the film progresses, we see how each storyline is somehow connected. Many questions are left unanswered in this movie, but that was Lynch’s intention, aiding in the persistent confusion and intrigue surrounding the film, as well as the general creepiness the movie emits.

Beetlejuice Another movie to add to your “must watch” list, Beetlejuice is directed by Tim Burton and stars Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, and Winona Ryder. A young couple, the Maitlands (Baldwin and Davis), are recently deceased and their home is sold to a new family, the Deetzes, father, mother, and daughter Lydia (Ryder) who is the only living resident who can see the Maitlands and subsequently befriends them.

In a desperate attempt to scare the Deetzes from their home, the Maitlands cal l upon Beetlegeuse (Keaton), a freelance “bio-exorcist,” to help them get rid of the Deetz parents. However, Beetlegeuse proves to be more of a problem than a solution and chaos ensues. What follows is pure fright and comedy.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Some might think a film that’s categorized as “musical comedy horror” is something to avoid. This is just not true when it comes to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a true cult classic and a Halloween staple. If you haven’t seen it, stop whatever you are doing and immediately better yourself by watching this film.

Adapted from the 1973 musical stage production, The Rocky Horror Show, the movie is a satire poking fun at science fiction and horror B movies popularized in the 1930s through 1970s.

A recently engaged couple (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) find themselves stranded and in need of shelter when they happen upon a castle inhabited by costumed strangers and Dr Frank N Furter (Tim Curry), an alien transvestite and mad scientist. Seduction, invention, musical numbers, weirdness: it’s a must see every Halloween season.

Hannibal Another movie based on a novel, Hannibal is the sequel to The Silence of the Lambs, following Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), an infamous forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer at large and Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, originated by Jody Foster in The Silence of the Lambs), an FBI agent trying to track Dr. Lecter down before his only living victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) tracks Lecter down first to exact his revenge.

Chock-full of suspense and terror, Hannibal is the perfect movie for cozying up under a blanket, lights out, volume up, and prepare to feel the heebie-jeebies.

The Faculty Directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring a powerhouse cast, The Faculty is a science fiction horror about a group of high school students who believe their school is being taken over by aliens. They take it upon themselves to discover who these aliens are and try to stop them from taking over the school’s population, and ultimately, the world.

The star-studded cast includes Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Famke Janssen, Jon Stewart, Salma Hayek, and Usher (yes, THE Usher), among many other well known names.
