PROVIDENCIA PRESS Jennifer Culbertson, Principal Hello Panther Community, During the month of May, Providencia students will be learning the meaning and importance of respect. Respect is a very important foundational factor in the development and maintenance of a healthy learning environment. It is respect that opens space for the development of trust and learning. Respect means treating those around you the way that you want to be treated. Showing respect for others is one of the most important values in the world. It means showing care for another person or thing, like the environment. Without respect, everything around us would be less peaceful. There would be more problems and less happiness. You show respect in many ways every day that you may not even realize! Being respectful is one of the key ingredients to being the best person you can be. RESPECT OCCURS WHEN YOU: Listen to others Play fair Use good manners Wait your turn Compliment someone Pick up after yourself Follow directions Speak nicely to and about others TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. In what ways do you treat people with respect? Are there any ways in which you don’t? 2. What happens when people are treated with respect? How about when they are not treated with respect? 3. Who is the most respectful person you know? What makes them that way? 4. What is something you can do to show more respect? 5. When have you felt respected in the classroom or at home (give a specific example)? 6. When have you seen someone else be respectful in the classroom or at home (give a specific example)? TAKE ACTION: You can show respect every moment of everyday by doing things like: Practicing the Golden Rule. Practicing Random Acts of Kindness. Saying “please” and “thank you” and “excuse me”. Making a point of not teasing and encourage others not to. Being patient with yourself and others when a mistake is made. Discussing what good manners are. Practicing good table manners. Making an effort not to gossip or talk about others in a negative way. Being courteous towards everyone. “Show Respect” is one of Providencia’s four main behavior expectations. We expect our students to show respect at home, at school, and in the community. Thank you for partnering with us this month, and always, to reinforce May’s character trait. It’s hard to believe that this school year is almost over. Let’s work together and encourage our students to FINISH STRONG! Jen Culbertson, Proud Providencia Principal

Hello Panther Community, During the month of May, Providencia students will be learning the meaning and importance of respect.

RESPECT OCCURS WHEN YOU:

• Listen to others • Play fair • Use good manners • Wait your turn • Compliment someone • Pick up after yourself • Follow directions • Speak nicely to and about others

TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. TAKE ACTION: You can show respect every moment of everyday by doing things like:

• Practicing the Golden Rule. • Practicing Random Acts of Kindness. • Saying “please” and “thank you” and “excuse me”. • Making a point of not teasing and encourage others not to. • Being patient with yourself and others when a mistake is made. • Discussing what good manners are. • Practicing good table manners. • Making an effort not to gossip or talk about others in a negative way. • Being courteous towards everyone.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PTA PRESIDENT

Hello Panther Families, Wow! I can’t believe that we are in our final month of school. It seems just like yesterday we were starting the school year. On behalf of the PTA, we would like to congratulate our 5th graders and wish them all the best as they begin their journey into middle school. I would like to thank the parents, staff, and PTA executive board for all your support during the school year. Please join us at our last PTA meeting of the school year, on May 18th at 7:00pm via Zoom. A link will be sent out closer to the meeting. We will be installing our 2021/2022 officers and saying good bye to some parents moving onto middle school. Please come to find out more about the amazing plans PTA is working on for next year and how you can get involved! Even though this year is just wrapping up, we are already looking ahead to next year. We hope to be back to "normal". If that is the case, we need parent volunteers like YOU to sign up to help with our fun activities. Click this link to sign up for a volunteer position for the 2021-2022 school year: https://signup.com/login/entry/10270312232521220127

Finally, we are looking for a Financial Secretary to join our Executive Board next school year. It is a great position for any new parents looking to get involved. The Financial Secretary:

• Works closely with the treasurer and other financial officers in handling PTA funds • Keeps a record of all PTA funds collected, deposited, and disbursed • Prepares monthly and annual financial reports using PTAEZ website

We will train and support any parent who is willing to try something new! Please let me know if you are interested. We want YOU to join our PTA Executive Board!

I hope everyone has an amazing summer! See you in August. Becky Mullins PTA President

A Note from the School Nurse by Peggy Kurihara RN Calcium is an important mineral our bodies need to build strong bones. Bones are important because they support the skeletal system which, in turn, support our posture, muscles and organs. Calcium is found in many foods which, when eaten, helps to build bones. Such foods include milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products. For those who are allergic to dairy, foods such as tofu, edamame, dark green leafy vegetable, sesame seeds, beans, oranges, figs and prunes also contain calcium and should be eaten. How much calcium we need depends on the age of the child. Kids 4-8 years of age need 700 milligrams of calcium per day and kids from 9-18 years of age need 1300 milligrams. A cup of milk, 8 ounces, contains about 300 milligrams of calcium. Please refer to the following link for more information: https://www.healthyeating.org/

Let's Eat Healthy + Dairy Council of California Homepage Let's Eat Healthy and Dairy Council of California offer nutrition products, curriculum, advisors and community education materials. Join the movement to empower healthy eating habits for all! www.healthyeating.org

We can be creative in making calcium rich foods attractive and appealing to our youngsters:

• Make parfaits with layers of plain yogurt, fruit, and whole-grain cereal. • Sprinkle low-fat cheese on top of snacks and meals. • Add white beans to favorite soups. • Add sesame seeds to baked goods or sprinkle on vegetables. • Serve hummus with cut-up vegetables. • Add tofu to a stir-fry. • Serve edamame as a snack. • Serve more dark green, leafy vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, collard greens, or Chinese cabbage) with meals. Serve

with yogurt to dip the vegetables.

The body needs Vitamin D to absorb the Calcium that is eaten. You might need to discuss with your child’s doctor if your child has enough Vitamin D in their bodies. We only have one chance to make sure we develop strong bones to last a lifetime. We need to encourage our children to eat foods rich in calcium from the time they are born. This is to ensure that their bones are strong and fortified into adulthood. Remember, "Healthy Children (with strong bones) Learn Better."
