The Role of the Amplification Technician

Each of the “cracklebox” stations consists of a cracklebox on a chair, in front of which is a vocal microphone/monitor speaker pair with which the adjacent players amplify cracklebox and vocal sounds. The amplification technician’s task is to balance the

intensity of these amplified sounds according to the indications in the score by adjusting levels at the mixer throughout performance. Percussion Instrumentation

About the Cracklebox

The Cracklebox is a portable, handheld, battery-operated electronic glitch instrument that sonifies skin conductance. The Cracklebox produces no sound until the player applies finger pressure directly to the circuit board, which consists of six metal contact areas. The player acts as a human patch cable, connecting the contact areas in numerous combinations. The result is a

wide variety of bizarre and mostly unpredictable sounds. However, the Cracklebox does have a kind of logic that can be learned through experience and intuition. The instrument should be held as depicted:

The Cracklebox does not have a volume control. Its loudness can be increased via conventional microphone amplification. Modification of the instrument in order to plug directly into an amplification device is highly discouraged, as the Cracklebox must pass electrical currents through the player in order to produce sound.

The original Cracklebox was invented in the 1970s by Michel Waisvisz. Today, Crackleboxes may be purchased from STEIM in the Netherlands (who, at present, is reissuing them) or may be borrowed from the composer. Mexican Apple Soda requires a total of six Crackleboxes.

Vocal Sounds

Strained, falsetto-ranged sound, produced by inhaling.

A soft, resonant “pop,” created by a rapid, bilabial separation; pitch notation is relative—low, middle or high— and should be adjusted by changing the vowel shape of the mouth cavity (changing the relative proximity of the rear of the tongue to the roof of the mouth).

The lip motion is similar to that of the hard “B” at the beginning of the English word “but”; however, the lips move apart several times faster. The mouth should remain open at the end of the sound for maximum projection. This is a percussive sound produced by the mouth—no vocalization should occur. Begin the sound with the lips rolled slightly inward toward the mouth cavity for maximum volume. It is essential that the player breathe through only the nose to perform this sound, as it depends on the natural resonance of the vocal cavity.

In a nerdy voice, speak the syllable “eh,” as in the English word “sled,” for the specified duration. Increase pitch slightly; the increase should not be so much as to sound inquisitive. Cracklebox Sounds

Perform short, “random” sounds for the specified duration. Pictographs are an inspirational visual prompt and need not be interpreted in any literal way.
