Going hunting or fishing in your neighborhood or local park may be good for you, but every sportsman dreams of traveling to a destination that can offer an amazing hunting/fishing experience. For those that harbor such dreams, the following locations are worth checking.

•Illinois – white-tailed deer

•New Mexico – Elk

•Alaska – Salmon

ILLINOIS – WHITE-TAILED DEER

The Midwest is known for its fair share of white-tailed deer, but what sets Illinois apart is the state's status as the top producer of corn and soybeans, which is food for deer. The federal Conservation Reserve and Wetlands Reserve agency also works to increase the natural habitat for deer, thus ensuring these animals have more land to roam on. Some of the best counties to find these trophy bucks include Adams and Pike counties.

NEW MEXICO – ELK

New Mexico is home to the trophy bull elk – a species increased by a

solid wildlife management plan. The agency charged with game and

fish management in the state works to keep a steady ratio of 40 to 50

bull elk for every 100 cows. That means there are a lot of solitary bulls.

The New Mexico Game and Fish Department accepts a low number of

game hunters compared to other Western states, and that’s by design.

New Mexico has implemented a draw system that favors resident

hunters, but it’s worth a shot for any game hunter to see if they meet

the requirements drawn by the agency.

ALASKA – SALMONThe aptly named King Salmon town in southwest Alaska is home to

various species of the Pacific salmon. A local fishery in the Bristol Bay

watershed can host thousands of anglers on more than 40,000 square

miles of wilderness teaming with national parks and streams.

Jeffrey Sofich loves salmon fishing and trophy hunting. To date, he’s

gone on several hunting/fishing trips in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and

Canada.
