Get ready for a great time this year at Cloverbud Day Camp on Friday, June 19th from 10:00am-2:00pm at Riverfront Park in Jefferson. 4-H Cloverbuds in kindergarten through 2nd grade are invited to participate in the day camp. Campers will meet new friends, play games and make take-home projects all related to the theme, “Under the Sea”. The Junior Leaders are busy planning an action-packed day for the Cloverbuds. The educational program registration fee is $15 which includes lunch, snack, t-shirt and activities. The deadline for registration is May 15th (this is also the last day to receive a tshirt). Register Here!

2020 Pizza & Pie Fundraiser The 2020 pizza & pie fundraiser will be here before we know it. Unfortunately, there will be a crucial change to the sale this year. We no longer will be able to sell Poyer’s frozen pies. Poyer’s reached out to the Extension Office and Pizza & Pie Committee explaining they will not have the staff to produce our large number of pies. We will be able to support them and sell their certificates. It was decided and voted on at the March Leader’s Association meeting to continue with Pine Cone & Emil’s and sell Poyer’s Certificates. The committee asks leaders to please inform their club members of the change so when the sale starts, they are aware. We apologize for this change, but look forward to continue working with Poyer’s. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to the committee.

Foods Project Cooking when you have time is a fun thing to do as a family. You can also learn a lot using the science of cooking and how things can go together to make something else. Did you know there are a lot of things you can substitute for something else in a recipe? With so much going on it isn’t so easy to just jump in your car and run to the grocery store to pick up something you might not have. So why not go on line and see what you can substitute? Maybe you have a different ingredient that will work almost the same? All you have to do is google common ingredients/substitutions and you can get a list of many different websites that can help you out. Here is a good site: browneyedbaker.com (there are LOTS more) so go explore as you figure out what you want to fix for dinner. Offering to cook for the family can be helpful to others in your household. It can be fun, doesn’t have to be overwhelming or too complicated. Attached are a few easy recipes anyone can put together. Finding recipes online using your favorite foods to search with can be fun too. Try your hand at cooking something new during this time- who knows; you might surprise yourself and everyone

inyourhousehold at how good it tastes?!!! Try these recipes: JG’s Favorite Quick Pick Dish & Lemon Poppy Seed Bread

My Mom’s the finest cook on earth, And she told me long ago,

That bread’s no good unless you add Some loving to the dough.

&

If you pour some happy spirit, In a great big mixing bowl;

Just add a few more ingredients And you’ll have a casserole.

Goat Project Due to the uncertainty of Covid-19 and the ongoing stay-at-home orders, the Goat Project Committee has decided to forego the points system for showing at fair this year. We hope everyone is safe and healthy at home! In the meantime, there are some websites listed below to help brush up on body parts and other miscellaneous goat information to keep everyone ready to go for fair! http://www.boergoats.com/clean/articleads.php?art=53 http://www.goatbiology.com/animations/bones.html https://www.kidzone.ws/animal-facts/goats/activities.htm If you are planning on selling in the Small Animal Sale this year, make sure you attend the MANDATORY zoom meeting on May 13th @ 6:30 pm. Topics such as sale changes, member agreements, etc, will be covered in this meeting. I'm available to talk either via phone or zoom at any point during the days. Also, feel free to post questions in the Facebook group, as I'm sure your questions being answered would be beneficial for others in the project as well. Plants & Natural Sciences Project May Activities for Enjoying the Outdoors and doing Natural Science, Adventures, and Environmental projects

What outdoor activities have you enjoyed doing this spring? How many birds have you seen and identified? Have you been able to see the White Pelicans? They are around Fort Atkinson and on Lake Koshkonong. Do you know who is changing colors from his winter brown-green coat to bright yellow? Watch for him. He'll change a gray day into a sunny one. What's his name? In May watch for two colorful birds that love oranges and grape jelly. They are the Rose-breasted Grosbeak and the Baltimore Oriole. Do you have a feeder that holds oranges and/or grape jelly? If not, look for a design you like and make a feeder before Mother's Day. That is when they often return

to Jefferson County and are looking for food. Learn more about orioles and what else they like to eat. Give them dinner and they will come back and sing to you. Search for oriole bird feeder plans. One with a roof is best. The learningstore.extension.wisc.edu has a publication about feeding birds. Bird Feeding Tips:for Beginners and Veterans. It doesn't talk directly about feeding orioles. It does give information on the care of feeders needed to keep birds healthy. You don't eat on dirty plates so don't feed the birds with a dirty feeder. While at that website, also download Shelves, Houses and Feeders for Birds & Mammals. It has good plans for building bird houses correctly for different birds. Plan to build a bird house for a bird that you see often in your yard. Choose a bird from the list of birds you made in April and build a house for it. No list, choose a bird you would like to have in your yard or one you would like to help. Talk to the County Parks Department and ask if you can build a bird house for them to put in a park. The Bio Blitz to be held at Dorothy Carnes Park is canceled but you can do your own Bio Blitz. Pick a location like your yard and study it to see what is really there. List trees, bushes, flowers, birds, insects, animals, amphibians, and etc that you see. Try to count how many of each there is and list what part they play in your yard. Do they help your yard? Would your yard be different if something was not there? Explain. Earth Day is celebrated April 22 in Wisconsin, but lets celebrate it everyday enjoying nature and preserving it by practicing sustainability. That would be using natural resources in a way that does not permanently damage or diminish resources. We all need the essentials of land, air, food, some form of energy, and water. They are our natural resources. We need them now and in the future. Taking a look at each of these and consider what they mean to you and changes you can do to preserve our environment. Enjoying birds, feeding them and building bird houses are part of preserving resources. By reusing plastic containers or lumber to create and build bird feeders and houses we can practice sustainability. That is using what we have instead of buying more materials that need to be made with more resources. Other items you might create from reusable stuff are a wind chime using old silverware or kitchen items. Or use interesting items for plant containers. Can you think of something else you can reuse or re-purpose? When we reuse we keep the stuff out of the landfill. Recycling and composting are also important in living sustainability. What are things we can recycle? What can we compost? Does your family recycle and compost? Make a poster illustrating items that can be recycled and what they can become. Or create a display on composting showing that waste items change into nutrient soil. Prepare a demonstration showing how much garbage we generate and that fills landfills consuming land space. Do we really want to live, work or play on a pile of garbage? Or would we like to

have a prairie to enjoy as it provides space for birds and animals. Plus a prairie can help with the air quality. Utah has some fact sheets on reusing, recycling, and composting at https://extension.usu.edu/sustainability/topics/land/index. When we take care of the land, we are able to have space for the plants and trees that purify the air by providing oxygen for us. How do they do that? Could you show that natural cycle on a poster? Or would you like to identify 3 sources of air pollution and give alternative solutions? Would growing our own food or purchasing locally grown food have an effect of air quality? Would the quality of the food be better? Think of ways the answers to these two questions can be a part of living sustainable. Plant a salad. Use a large pot or container with space for a patio tomato, lettuce, and a few radishes. You'll have fresh food at your door and not causing any pollution from using transportation. Another resource we depend upon is energy. We hear people talk about renewable and non-renewable energy. What is the difference? List sources of energy giving the good and bad points about them. Investigate solar and wind energy as alternative energy sources. Are there ways to change how much energy you use? Possibly ride a bike instead of driving a car. What kind of exhibit would you make about energy sustainability? Have you heard the saying, Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. What does that mean? Where does the water come from when you turn on the faucet? Find information showing the water cycle. The movement of water through the earth. Make a poster illustrating the water-cycle. Think about all the places you see water. Make a list of them and indicate if they could be polluted and what could be polluting them. Many places water is tested to ensure it is safe to drink. Do an experiment using a flower or celery stalk in a glass of colored water(red or blue) to show how water moves through plants. The water travels into plants via their root systems, and the water moves up the xylem in the plants, eventually evaporating off the leaves. The process is called transpiration. Put a plastic bag over the flower or celery leaves and close it with a twist tie or string. See if water droplets form in the bag. It works best if the experiment can be in the sun.

Think about how important water is. All life needs water. From the aquatic insects, the birds and animals, to plants and people, all use and need water. Make a chart listing the many times you use water on the left side of you paper or poster. Then on the right side list ways you could conserve your water usage.

Lets enjoy our environment, manage it and protect it. May we do our best to live sustainably. Avoiding the depletion of natural resources in a way to maintain an ecological balance. Remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Questions and comments are always welcome about all Natural Science projects. I enjoy sharing ideas, seeds or plants. Email or call/text. Starting immediately after Memorial Day, if it is possible to meet in small groups, I would like to give Archery participants the opportunity to complete their projects. In any event I intend to provide scores and my suggested placements to those who 1) have completed their project and 2) those who want that information. Outdoor Shooting Sports projects are not looking like they will happen this year. We will make an official announcement as to the new Shooting Sports Key Leader in the next two months. We believe that things will go forward much more smoothly next year!! On the home front my off hand shooting still needs work. I've switched to a .22 rifle now. We are still playing with archery in the yard. Please see photo below. Joe Walsh— 262-894-1652

This group provides funding recommendations for the Leader's Association, scholarship selections, event planning, record book grading and more! Your commitment on the team will be about 2-4 hours per month, sometimes more and sometimes less depending on the time of year. As a Board member, you will be asked to attend all Leaders Association and Board meetings as able and help with events like the end of the year banquet and Open House. If you are interested, please fill out this nomination form by May 6th. Let us know if you have questions!

Leader’s Association Meeting The next Leaders Association meeting will be held on Thursday, May 21st at 6:30 pm via Zoom. Countywide Project Leadership Needed There are many projects that are offered by the Jefferson County 4-H Program - 70 to be exact! Please refer to Page 12 to see which projects have Countywide Leaders. All other projects do not. If you are interested in becoming a Countywide Project Leader, there are many opportunities that exist. If you are interested, please contact the EXT Office for more details. Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Reminders

Please make sure all youth attending your club and project meetings are enrolled in 4honline. This is so important for reasons such as (insurance, communications, to name a few). If you notice there are youth participating but are not on your club list, please let us know! Also, if you can’t access your list, please call the office and we are happy to help you find out if someone is enrolled or not. We have had a number of new families join 4-H! Please welcome new members by having them introduce themselves or getting to know them ahead of time so you/another leader/youth can introduce them. And better yet, have all members (unless it will just take too much time) introduce themselves so the new folks don’t feel left out or spotlighted. 4-H should be a welcoming and relaxing experience for all- new and old alike! If you would like some super fun “get-to-know-you”

games or ice-breakers, please don’t hesitate to ask. I have so many resources! Let’s make sure that Jefferson County 4-H club meetings are a fun, welcoming and enjoyable place to be.

Enrollment Pending?

There is still a large number of adult leaders that have pending enrollments in 4honline. You each should have received a personal email from Katelyn stating what you need to do to complete your enrollment. Club leaders - please help us by reminding leaders at your meetings! You are not considered a volunteer with our program until you are approved. Please contact Katelyn with any questions.

OLDER MEMBERS

Junior Leaders The next Junior Leaders meeting will be held May 26th at 7:00pm. Anyone who is interested in being a counselor at Cloverbud Day Camp should contact Alyssa.
