JEEPFrom wartime service in 1942 to civil models from 1945, the Jeep name implies utilitarian character and go-anywhere ability. Originator of the concept, Bantam, shared the design with Ford and Willys with Willys (Ford had a nine-slot grille, Willys had seven) extending it to a Civilian Jeep (CJ) model in 1945 and registering the name Jeep in 1950. The Jeep was owned by a string of car makers from 1953 including Kaiser, American Motor Corporation (AMC), Renault, Chrysler (1987) and by association, the merged Daimler and Chrysler business until private equity purchase in 2007 and then Fiat Chrysler Automobiles from 2014. The Jeep has been built under license in Spain, India, China, Japan and through South America. Jeep now makes five models in the US and one, the Renegade, in Italy, platform sharing with the Fiat 500X.
