What’s in a name? Maybe more than you think. Although it’s not always apparent in western culture, names carry great significance in many parts of the world. In Jewish thought, a name does not serve merely as a random designation, but conveys the nature and essence of the thing named. As Catherine Martin explains, this is especially true of biblical names, particularly the names of God. She states, “Whenever God shared one of His names in Scripture, He did so because He wanted

us to know something true about Him.” Martin reveals the various names of God and their meanings, including…

El Shaddai, ¾ God AlmightyYahweh Rophe, ¾ the Lord who healsYahweh Sabaoth, ¾ the Lord of hostsEl Roi, ¾ the God who sees meYahweh Mekaddesh, ¾ the Lord who sanctifies

As evidenced by her life and ministry, Martin believes wholeheartedly that knowing God is the most important thing in life. Now, she shares her firm conviction that God wants to be known, and He has chosen to reveal Himself by telling us His many names. While many people—even devoted Christians—are largely unaware of the many names of God, Martin believes it is imperative that we both know and understand God’s names if we are to truly trust Him with our lives. She explains that God intends for us to trust Him, but He does not expect us to do this in a vacuum. He’s given us reasons to trust Him, which we can find in the study of His names.

“Do you know what God is asking of you? Stop everything, discover God, and then know Him. How can you do that?

Through His names.”

To help us better understand who God is and draw near to Him, Martin shares five secrets to knowing and trusting God. She encourages us to adopt a process where we first discover one of God’s names, then draw near to the name, declare that name, depend on the name, and finally delight in the name. Martin focuses on our response to what God has revealed, calling us to depend on the Lord and cling to His names in times of stress and trials. The God of the Bible will never seem distant or impersonal again to the believer who is dedicated to the study of His names.

In Her Own Words:Quotes from Catherine Martin in Trusting in the Names of God

““

“Whether you are a pastor, missionary, laborer in the field, secretary in an office, or CEO of a large corporation, your highest and greatest

aspiration should be knowing God and trusting in His names.”

“I want you to trust who God is more than how you feel or what you see happening in the circumstances of your life. When you know God, you will learn to trust Him rather

than people, money, and possessions.”

“God doesn’t have just one name, but many names. Through His names, He has revealed His character—who He is, what He does, and what He says.”

“Think of a treasure chest that is locked. Inside the treasure chest are unbelievable, countless riches. What you need is the key. To unlock the treasure chest of the

character and personality of God you need the key that is wrapped up in knowing and trusting His names.”

“Knowing God’s names is the secret to trusting God.”

“When you trust the name of God by discovering His names, drawing near to His names, declaring His names, depending on His names, and delighting in His names, you will see

God work in your life in amazing ways.”

“Trusting in the Lord is your greatest response in a time of trial, trouble, loss, or need. Whatever your stress, whatever your trial, rely on God in the midst of your need, and watch

to see what He will accomplish. Sometimes He will surprise you with answers you could never have asked or imagined.”
