As part of this visit, students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of this excursion, the Australian Government has contributed $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the cost. This $20 was deducted from the excursion fee paid by parents throughout the year. The rebate will be paid to the school this term following the completion of the excursion. Sport State Athletics Carnival This week sees Jaylen, Bodhi and Lachlan travelling to the Sydney Athletic Centre in Homebush to compete in the State Athletics Carnival. The carnival takes place over two days with the boys all competing in multiple events. It is an amazing achievement to qualify for the state carnival and we are extremely proud of their efforts. Film Festival and Choir Performance Our Year 6 students have been hard at work creating a short film to be screened at the upcoming CEP Digital Media Festival. The film festival will be held in Week 5, on Thursday 6th November, at Callaghan College Wallsend Campus. There will be 14 short films shown on the evening. All of the films have been produced by local students. This event also provides another opportunity to showcase our fantastic choir (providing we can guarantee that we have enough singers!). So please ensure that you return your expression of interest notes ASAP to Mrs Hawksworth. Parents, families and community members are all welcome to attend. See the flyer in this newsletter for detailed information. Tickets will be sold by our wonderful Year 6 students during Weeks 3, 4 and 5 at the front of the 5/6 classroom as per the schedule below. Tickets are $5 per person or $10 for a family of four. Ticket Sales Weeks 3 and 4 - Monday and Tuesday 8.30am-9.00am Week 5 - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8.30am-9.00am We look forward to seeing you there. Message from Band Master Congratulations to Mrs Walters and our school band members - Thomas K, Thomas T, Sam W, Kaiden W, Ashleigh C, Samantha P, Amy P, Monica W, Kiana W,

Sophie H, Zoie W, Ruby Y and Yaeseo S for their fabulous performance at 2014 Bandfest! All of your hard work and dedication really paid off. We received a Certificate of Commendation, a trophy and a wonderful report from the adjudicator. Thank you to Mrs Ninevski, Mrs Howard and the parents who came to transport us, but most of all to support us. This has been, by far my proudest year yet! Our band shirts looked awesome up on stage. If you still have a band shirt, could you please ensure that they are washed and returned to the school band room ASAP as we will need them for our final performance on Presentation Day. Once again, WELL DONE! I am one proud conductor. Alecia Walters

P&C News The P&C are now looking to fill 2 positions to keep the P&C running. We are after 2 enthusiastic people to fill the President and Secretary roles. Unfortunately Alecia has resigned from the Secretary position, as her due date is nearing. These roles can be shared positions, so if you have some spare time and would like to assist for the remainder of the term, we would be greatly appreciative. If interested, please speak to Mrs Howard or Kylie Cox. Our last P&C meeting which was to be held Tuesday 14th October was postponed. A new time and date will be announced shortly. Canteen We have sent out a new price list for Term 4. On this price list we have outlined the foods which are Green foods and what are Amber foods. If you have any questions about this menu please see Debbie in the canteen for an explanation.

Canberra Excursion Stage 3 - 2014

On Tuesday of Week 1, 28 of our Stage 3 students arrived at Jesmond Public School bleary eyed but extremely excited about the week ahead. The time was 6.00am. Mr Bannister and Mrs Curry are extremely thankful to students, parents and caregivers for having all students at school on time and ready to leave. As we waved goodbye and met our bus driver John the anticipation of the week ahead easily outweighed the tiredness that we were all feeling. Our first scheduled stop was Goulburn for lunch. From there we headed to Parliament House for a range of activities that taught us all about the parliamentary process and allowed us the opportunity to role play a variety of situations. From here we headed to the Australian War Memorial for a guided tour and our two School Captains taking part in the very prestigious and memorable closing ceremony. Congratulations to these two students for the role they played in this ceremony. The Ibis Hotel on the outskirts of the capital was our final destination for the day where we were allocated our roommates and given our room keys for the week. We cleaned up, had dinner and relaxed for the evening after a big day of travel and the excitement and length of the day. Our second day started with an early breakfast. John took us for a ride to the top of Mt Ainslie to gain a true perspective of the Canberra landscape, and then off to visit the Electoral Education Office (congratulations Mr Apple on winning), Old Parliament House, the Royal Australian Mint (lots of lovely money to be seen), some lunch in a park and on to Questacon. Questacon seemed to be very popular amongst the students who were able to interact with the science based activities. We spent our money on some souvenirs and some students even bought gifts for family members. From here we made our way across Lake Burley Griffin to the National Capital Exhibition where we learnt all about the origins and planning of Canberra. It was then back to our hotel for a shower and dinner, to be ready to head out to the National Dinosaur Museum. We were treated to a night time tour of our prehistoric mates, but upon our departure we were also treated to a Luna eclipse and a magnificent Red Moon. After a long and tiring day we headed back to our rooms for a well-earned rest. Thursday dawned with the same magnificent weather we had been treated to for our entire visit. After breakfast and many, many bowls of Coco Pops we headed off to the beautiful National Museum of Australia where we explored the history of our incredible nation pre and post European settlement. It was then back to Parliament House to take a full tour of this amazing institution; we were even allowed to go onto the grass roof of the building. Our next destination was the National Gallery of Australia where some of us were treated to a visit inside an art installation - the James Turrell Skyspace. As we entered this artistic masterpiece our senses heightened with sights, sounds, smells and touches of this incredible piece of art. Inside the gallery a wide range of artworks were viewed and discussed. It was then off to see what Geoscience Australia had in store for us. This place allowed us to explore and investigate what our Earth was made of, how it behaved and even where and when earthquakes were happening as we worked. Afterwards we made our way back to the hotel for dinner and to freshen up for our night activity. It was then off to Telstra Tower to see the night sights of Canberra from its highest point. Wow, what a view. We rose early on Friday to ensure our bags were packed and rooms were tidy so we could head off to the Australian Institute of Sport. We were greeted by a resident gymnast who was to be our guide. She took us on a tour of this athlete factory and then allowed us to use the Sportex activity area all to ourselves. We then settled down on the coach for the long trek back to Jesmond. It was great to arrive home safely and to be met by so many smiling faces of our families. I would like to thank all the students who attended this excursion for their humour, behaviour and lifelong memories that were created along the way. To Port Stephens Coaches and John Hurst, our bus driver, I also thank you. To our parents and carers who ensured their children were able to attend this excursion, I thank you for giving up your children for a week, as well as making the financial commitment that guaranteed it went
