Neighborly is a simple vest sized for a child, intended to keep them warm at their core while not

overheating them during all the running about that kiddos do. This variation on the pattern is

complemented by cables wrapping around the wide banded boatneck collar which appear to connect

to more cables coiling down the front. The shaping on this version is narrower than the original and

would work well for a boy or girl. How ever you make it, I hope you enjoy Neighborly! xoxo

Size : fits a child 4-6 years when knit as written.

**although this pattern is written for one specific size, you could easily resize it accordingly by knitting it in a heavier/lighter weight yarn using larger/smaller needles.

Measurements : length from bottom of collar to hem 12.5” (302cm) circumference at chest 24” (61cm) circumference at hem 30” (76cm) circumference at armhole 11” (28cm)

Yarn : Peace Fleece Worsted [70% wool, 30% mohair; 200yd per 4oz. skein] - 2 skeins. This is a heavier

worsted yarn than what was used in the original Neighborly pattern, so be sure to check your gauge.

Needles : US 8 (5mm) circulars and double pointed needles, and a cable needle. Gauge : 15 St and 23 rows = 4”x4” (in stockinette stitch—after blocking) NOTE : C6F = slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and hold in front, K3, then K3 from cable needle.

Collar : CO 14 st. Row 1: K6, P1, K6, P1. Row 2: K1, P6, K1, P6. Row 3: repeat row 1. Row 4: repeat row 2. Row 5: K6, P1, C6F, P1. Row 6: repeat row 2. Repeat these 6 rows 19 more times — 20 cables total. RS: BO6, P1, K6, P1. (to create the buttonhole tab) WS: K1, P6, K1. RS: P1, K6, P1. WS: K1, P6, K1. RS: P1, K2, BO2, K2, P1. WS: K1, P2, CO2, P2, K1. — you’ve just made the buttonhole! RS: P1, K6, P1. WS: K1, P6, K1. Repeat these 2 rows one time, then BO all sts in patt. Block the collar piece — this will make the next step easier. Take the collar piece and join the short ends on the WS, overlapping the buttonhole tab on top of the RS. You are securing the collar band together at this point, and later you will fold it over and stitch it to the WS (creating a sturdy banded collar). Yoke : ** Look at the RS of the collar with the buttonhole to be placed just to the front of the child’s left shoulder. You are going to start picking up stitches 10 rows toward the back of the intersection where you overlapped the collar and the buttonhole tab begins. Pick up 116 stitches all along that bottom edge of the collar. PM and join to work in the round. Set-up Round: K to last 18 sts, P1, K6, P1, K to end. (setting up the placement of the vertical cable) Repeat this round 3 more times. Cable Round: K to last 18 sts, P1, C6F, P1, K to end. (work the cable every 6 rounds/rows until BO) Now repeat the set-up round 5 times. Bodice : ** You are going to work the front and back of the bodice separately, creating the armholes. Then you will join to work in the round to complete the lower bodice. BO5, K53 (place these BACK sts on a holder/scrap yarn), BO5, K to last 18 sts, P1, C6F, P1, K10. (106 sts) Work the FRONT 53 sts in St st for 21 more rows, ending with a WS row. **Remember to incorporate that vertical cable band, C6F every 6 rows. Break yarn and place FRONT sts on a holder/scrap yarn when done.

Starting on the WS, work the BACK in St st for 21 rows, ending with a WS row, do not break yarn. Turn so you are looking at the RS of the BACK — CO5, K53 BACK sts, CO5, work 53 FRONT sts. (116 sts) PM and work in patt until piece measures approximately 11.5” from the bottom of the collar ending with a round where you did the C6F. Work K1 P1 rib for 4 rows (incorporating the cable band through to the hem), then BO in patt. A note on the color edging in the vest pictured — I used stash yarn (also Peace Fleece Worsted) to add a little pop of color for the last ribbed row as well as the BO row at the hem and on the armholes. This is not necessary, just a personal choice. There are many ways in which you can personalize this piece – feel free to improvise! Armholes : Using double pointed needles, pick up 56 sts around the edge of one armhole. Join to work in the round. Work K1 P1 rib for 3 rounds, then BO in patt. Repeat for other armhole.

Finishing : Fold over the collar toward the WS so that the cable is on the RS and the stockinette band serves as the facing—stitch in place. Secure a large button to the RS of the collar underneath the buttonhole, then fasten. Block the entire piece, weave in ends & present to the kiddo!
