J.C. Penney Company is a retailer, operating roughly 1,100 department stores. Its business consists ofselling merchandise and services to consumers through its department stores and through its internetwebsite. Of late JC Penney has been facing a lot of problems and the stock has been battered down by themarket.Previous CEO Johnson, who built his reputation reinventing retail at Apple (AAPL), changed the productmix and pricing strategy at J.C. Penney, eliminated price mark-downs and causing the bargain hunting J.C.Penney chief shopper to abandon the store. As the retailer struggled with dramatically reduced floortraffic, he reintroduced promotions and sales prices, but it was too late. His marketing message was allover the map, from highlighting free haircuts for kids to comparison pricing.Key triggers for the buy call

However there has been some strong positives for the company recently. One of the largest hedge funds inthe world, Soros Fund Management LLC, has disclosed a 7.91% stake in the retailer. This translates to aholding of roughly 17.4 million shares. This is an extremely interesting disclosure as the retailer has hadone of the worst years of any company. Moreover this is a vote of confidence in the company.Also there is news of Goldman Sachs rounding up financing for J.C. Penney; it has commitments roughly ofabout $1.75 billion for a term loan with a coupon slightly above 7% and no equity component. That loanwould be backed by real estate and real estate lease and some other assets.We believe that we have seen the bottom of JC Penney and we would advise our clients to buy the stockfor the week.
