Richland School District-Referendum These are some of the impacts the questions for an April referendum would have
on Jefferson Elementary if passed.
1. Safety and Security The improvements will allow us to increase instructional areas as well as update our
health services area for students needing medical attention. The current layout re-
quires students to receive services in an area without proper running water and toilet-
ing facilities. In addition, these improvements will meet the need of having a welcoming
environment and providing for a secure building.
2. Building Maintenance & Improvements
New Counter tops and Cabinets
Add Air Conditioning
Fire Alarm

Clock/PA
Site Concrete and Ramp to Playground

WINTERSCAPES around Jefferson During the months of January and February everyone was constantly in mo-
tion with MAPs, PALs and Access testing, along with the shifting of instruc-
tion with our weather related School Closings.
We decided to take advantage of the weather (on the not so cold days) to
create classroom WINTERSCAPES. At times, around Jefferson you could
see students working together to create their class WINTERSCAPES on
their claimed plot of land!

Fostering Readers
When we teach students to read the goal is to have each child be a fluent, compre-hending reader who loves to read. As children are beginning to read, in early ele-mentary, they often claim bragging rights for how many books they have read. While fluency is very important for student performance, it is necessary that stu-dents are able to demonstrate comprehension of their reading.
A few strategies that you can act on to help promote your child’s understanding of their readings;
1. After reading a few pages, ask your child to tell you what they have been read-ing. Ask questions specific to what has been read perhaps about the characters, setting, sequence, problems and/or solution.
2. If your child is reading a chapter book ask questions at the end of the chapters.
3. When the book is read, ask your child questions about how they could re-write the book with a different ending or if they would encourage other’s to read the book along with why or why not.
With a younger child, take turns choosing books to read to your child. Long after
children are able to read, they are learning from listening to others read. Children
will model pace, tone and expression after hearing you read. Often young children
enjoy reading their favorites over and over. When you take your turn, introduce
your child to new titles and authors. When on the go, bring along a book and read to
your child at a sibling practice or event. To slow the speed of the day, curl up to-
gether with a book when you get home from work.
As your child ages, enjoy reading time together.
This may mean you both read the same book and
have conversations about your readings or you
simply enjoy independently reading, sharing the
gift of time, space and the LOVE OF READING
together!

First Grade Happenings by Ms. Clements & Mrs. Koenig
First grade is a very busy place this time of the year. We have
been learning all the various spellings of the long vowel sounds,
and there are a lot of them! We continue to practice all the
blends and digraphs we learned earlier in the year. Putting this
all together is making us strong readers and spellers. In math we
have learned to add groups of 10’s and continue to practice writ-
ing and solving story problems. We are learning to write opinion
articles about topics such as best video games, best toys, best
movies, and best books. We are looking forward to Read Across
America week as we celebrate the wonder and joy of READING!!!!
Second Grade Happenings by Ebony & Alora (Mrs. Stibbe‘s Class)
We have been very busy in second grade. In Reading we are doing "Buddy
Books". This is where we sit by a buddy and read the same book silently and then
talk about the book by answering questions like Who is the story about? and What
is happening in the story? We are also
learning about biographies and reading
biographies about famous people. In math
we are doing lots of story problems! We
are practicing comparing problems and
problems that have an unknown
start. Sometimes we have to add to get
the answer and sometimes we have to
subtract. In writing we are writing about
books and telling our opinions about the
books. We are having fun!

Third Grade Happenings by Mrs. Green
Happy March! It’s hard to believe that we are already in the third month of
the new year. Time is flying by! This month is full of a lot of fun and exciting learning
opportunities for the students.
In math, the students are beginning a new unit on comparison story problems.
They are also studying word problems that have too much or hidden information.
Please encourage your child to keep practicing their multiplication and division facts at
home!
In Writer’s Workshop, we are finishing up our unit on persuasive writing. The
students have done a great job at creating speeches that are convincing to others. In
Reader’s Workshop, we are beginning the month of March
with a celebratory “Dr. Seuss Week.” To honor this won-
derful author and illustrator, we are accomplishing a lot by
working with our book clubs and asking deep, meaningful
questions about characters.
Last but not least, please remember to dress your
child appropriately for each school day (coats, hats,
gloves, and boots). Spring weather may be here, but it is
often cooler during our morning recesses. Thank you!

There have been many students visiting the office complaining of a headache,
stomach ache or itchy throat. The hope is that with a little TLC; a cough
drop, drink of water, brief rest or pain medication your child will be able to
remain at school to grow & learn.
Parents will be contacted to pick up their child if he/she is experiencing a fe-
ver, vomiting or diarrhea so they are able to rest and recuperate at home.
To help keep your child healthy encourage your child to do the following;
wash hands frequently
drink plenty of water
get a good night’s sleep
dress appropriately for the weather, especially the cool mornings

The fourth grade classes will be working hard in the weeks
leading up to spring break and the week after! In math, we
are currently studying writing and solving equations for mul-
tistep word problems. After we finish up this lesson, we will
be moving into a unit on measurement. In reading, we are dis-
cussing character traits and will be discussing main ideas,
theme, and poetry. The students are really enjoying learning
about the American Revolution in our information writing unit. In social studies, we
are learning about the fur trade era and how it affected Wisconsin. Science will con-
tinue to be a fun time while learning about the human body and all the it’s systems.
5th Grade Counter Act *** By: Mackenzie Sheafor
In the 5th grade classrooms at Jefferson we are learning about Counter Act.
Counter Act is about teaching kids not to do drugs, alcohol, and violence. Officer Dan is
our teacher for Counter Act. We learn about how drugs, alcohol, and violence can make
us get in trouble or even go to jail.
We get T-shirts and certificates for participating in Counter Act and getting
our homework done. On Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 all students and parents have
to go to Doudna Elementary in Richland Center, WI and perform a skit for the parents.
I really like Counter Act because I think I learn more from
it. Counter Act is a really good experience because you know the
consequences of what can happen when you get older. I hope that
you liked my story because I had fun writing it.
