Processional Verses (Stand)

Evening prayer, or Vespers, from the Latin word Vespera meaning “evening” is a worship service at the close of

the day that has its roots in the Jewish daily hours of prayer. In its transfer to the early Christian church and to

Vespers services today, it has kept its contemplative character, offering thanks for the mercies of the day, and

prayers for divine protection and the gift of inner peace. Vespers traditionally included the singing of psalms,

hymns and the canticle of Mary’s song Magnificat, as well as readings from scripture and the offering of prayers.

Psalm Prayer Leader: Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O God, and let your loving

kindness descend upon us, that with purified hearts we may sing your praise with the church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever.

All: Amen Psalm 34:15-22 People sing verses in bold print.

15The eyes of the LORD are up- | on the righteous, and God’s ears are open | to their cry. 16The face of the LORD is against those | who do evil, to erase the remembrance of them | from the earth. 17The righteous cry, and | the LORD hears them and delivers them from | all their troubles. 18The LORD is near to the | brokenhearted and saves those whose spir- | its are crushed. 19Many are the troubles | of the righteous, but the LORD delivers them from | every one. 20God will keep safe | all their bones; not one of them | shall be broken. 21Evil will bring death | to the wicked and those who hate the righteous | will be punished. 22O LORD, you redeem the life | of your servants, and those who put their trust in you will | not be punished. Psalm Prayer

Leader: O God, graciously hear us, for we seek you alone. Deliver us from our fears and terrors, quiet us with the peace that passes understanding, and let us taste your goodness, which makes us radiant with joy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

All: Amen

WORD Reading: John 6:53-69 (The Message Translation) 53-58 But Jesus didn’t give an inch. “Only insofar as you eat and drink flesh and blood, the flesh and blood of the Son of Man, do you have life within you. The one who brings a hearty appetite to this eating and drinking has eternal life and will be fit and ready for the Final Day. My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. By eating my flesh and drinking my blood you enter into me and I into you. In the same way that the fully alive Father sent me here and I live because of him, so the one who makes a meal of me lives because of me. This is the Bread from heaven. Your ancestors ate bread and later died. Whoever eats this Bread will live always.” 59 He said these things while teaching in the meeting place in Capernaum.

60 Many among his disciples heard this and said, “This is tough teaching, too tough to swallow.”

61-65 Jesus sensed that his disciples were having a hard time with this and said, “Does this throw you completely? What would happen if you saw the Son of Man ascending to where he came from? The Spirit can make life. Sheer muscle and willpower don’t make anything happen. Every word I’ve spoken to you is a Spirit-word, and so it is life-making. But some of you are resisting, refusing to have any part in this.” (Jesus knew from the start that some weren’t going to risk themselves with him. He knew also who would betray him.) He went on to say, “This is why I told you earlier that no one is capable of coming to me on his own. You get to me only as a gift from the Father.”

66-67 After this a lot of his disciples left. They no longer wanted to be associated with him. Then Jesus gave the Twelve their chance: “Do you also want to leave?” 68-69 Peter replied, “Master, to whom would we go? You have the words of real life, eternal life. We’ve already committed ourselves, confident that you are the Holy One of God.”

Leader: Word of God. Word of life. All: Thanks be to God.

Reflection (sit) Following the Reflection and some silence: Leader: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. All: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
