The Temple Jazz Orchestra will join trumpeter Wayne Bergeron in concert as part of the 2015 Jazz'SAlive festival in San Antonio this September.

The two-day festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20th at San Antonio's Tra-vis Park. Bergeron and TJO will be the featured group at the Saturday concert, playing on the Main Stage starting at 8:00 pm.

The festival, in its 32nd year, is sponsored by the The San Anto-

nio Parks Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization which helps support parks in San Antonio. Jazz'SAlive is one of four major events put on by the Foundation to help raise funds for the parks sys-tem.

The Los Angeles-based Bergeron, a superb lead trumpeter and extremely active jazz and studio musician, has performed frequently with TJO. He last played with the band at the 2014 Temple College Jazz Festival.

The Temple Jazz Orchestra heads for the moun-tains this weekend as it starts a six-concert tour of Texas and Colorado. TJO's featured guest artist for the tour is saxophonist Ed Calle.

The tour starts Saturday June 6 at 7:30 pm with a special "Hit The Road" concert in Temple College's Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center featuring Calle and TJO. The concert will preview the material the group will perform on the tour, including several Calle charts from his performances with Arturo Sandoval's big band and "TJO - TKO", an original com-posed for the band by Austin saxophonist Paul Baker. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

TJO will then head west for Amarillo, where the band will perform in the Amaril-

lo College concert hall at 7:30 pm Sunday June 7. The following day (June 8) the band moves to the Colo-rado Springs area, where they'll play at Soda Springs

Park in Manitou Springs at 7:00 pm. TJO and Calle perform in Ft. Collins

the next morning (June 9th), with a concert at the Oak Street Plaza, in Old Town Ft. Collins, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

On Thursday June 11 the group will arrive in Estes Park, where they'll play a one-hour concert in Performance Park at 7:00 pm. Ed Calle...Ed Calle may not be a household name, even in

some jazz households, but his sound is quite familiar. His agressive tenor saxophone playing has been heard in multiple contexts, from jazz recordings under his own name to supporting work for jazz, pop and Latin performers like Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Ma-chine, Bob James and Arturo Sandoval.

Calle was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to Spanish parents, and the Latin connection is also a part of his sound. However, that sound is tempered by his passion for jazz, born when he first heard saxophonist Michael Brecker while still a student at the Uni-versity of Miami.

Calle's jazz-Latin combina-tion has fueled a career as both performer and educator. He has served as a guest artist and clinician with the Monk Insti-tute and at colleges including Brigham Young University, Temple College, The University of North Florida, The University of Florida, The University of Miami, and West Palm Beach Community College.

He is also a four-time Grammy

nominee and one of the most recorded saxophonists in history, featured on more than 1,200 CDs and upwards of 8,500 singles.

Calle lives in South Florida where he serves as Asso-ciate Professor Senior of Music Business and Produc-tion at Miami Dade College. He also owns and oper-ates One-Take Recording Studios and leads the Fuego Caliente Latin Jazz Orchestra.

Calle also has a bachelor’s degree in math from Florida International University. “I’ve studied jazz and harmony from a mathematical perspec-tive,” he said. “And there is a strong connection between music and math. I’m convinced that most of the great figures in math history were also musi-cians, because the same guys who gave us geometry also gave us the modes. “

Calle performs on Satur-day evening, June 6, with the Temple Jazz Orchestra, and will join the band for the five con-certs comprising TJO's Colo-rado tour.
