Lambs across the country are taking their first tentative step. Shorts are being extracted from their places of hibernation and dusted off. This can only mean one thing; Spring is here.

Enough with the poetry. We’ve had a smashing start to the year here at The Jazz Cafe, and not just any year, our 25th year! We celebrated Valentines with Alexander O’Neal, grooved with The Herbaliser, relaxed with Maxi Priest, and got lairy with Pharoahe Monch. I’m worn out just thinking about it.

The old adage ‘no rest for the wicked’ has never seemed more apt so let us look to the future. April will see the

return of the London International Ska Festival with appearances at The Jazz Cafe from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Dreadzone & Horace Panter (The Specials). Jarrod Lawson will also join us for two spellbinding performances, not to mention Akala & Beardyman and we haven’t even got to May yet!

The fifth month will see the return of the legendary Jocelyn Brown to our stage as well as Carleen Anderson, KRS-One and the infamous Camden Rocks all-dayer.

Read on for more great shows, a preview of this year’s London International Ska Festival & we even squeezed in a cheeky interview with someone really ‘special’ (wink wink).

Page 9: Jazz Cafe Brochure - April/May Issue

How did you come to join The Specials?I met Jerry Dammers at art College in Coventry in 1973. It wasn’t until he graduated in 1976 that he invited me to play music with him. Lynval (Golding) was playing guitar and Silverton Hutchinson was playing drums. We had a vocalist, Tim Strickland. It was this 5-piece line up that played our first shows.

What are your lasting memories from those 2 Tone days? Going on tour with The Clash in August 1978 was, for me, a turning pointin deciding to be a musician full time. Financially it was disastrous and physically it was extremely challenging but the feeling was incredible.

Your new side-project Uptown Ska Collective is a tribute to The Skatalites. Tell us more...Neol Davies had a band called Selecter Instrumental a while back and I played a few gigs with them and found it very enjoyable. When I was teaching I formed a similar band in Coventry, playing Skatalites material. Obviously there were like-minded people in The Specials when we re-formed who were interested in playing ska. We have all the people from The Specials who aren’t in The Specials if you know what I mean. Nikolaj, the keyboard player, Jon and Tim (brass). The rest of the guys are from Leicester, most of whom played with Laurel Aitken.

INTERVIEW:HORACE PANTER

The bassist of The Specials brings his new side-project Uptown Ska Collective to The London International Ska Festival at The Jazz Cafe.

At LISF 2015 you are sharing the bill with Rhoda of The Bodysnatchers and Beat Goes Bang (Everett of The Beat and Micky Billingham of Dexys). Did you work with them back in the day?

Oh yes. The Specials and The Beat toured together in Ireland, early 1981. The Bodysnatchers toured with us a year before that and I spent 4 years in the company of Micky, he was the keyboard player with me in General Public, the band I joined after having left The Specials in 1982.

Outside of music you are extremely busy with art. What’s the inspiration behind that?

Art is something I have always taken an interest in. I have a degree in Fine Art. Travelling the world as a musician has given me the opportunity to visit some of the worlds’ top museums and art galleries. I was an art teacher at a school in Coventry which made me concentrate a lot more on the subject. When The Specials re-formed I found I had a lot more time to work on my own practise. It was a short step to establishing this parallel career.

Any upcoming exhibitions? There’s an exhibition at Red House Originals in Harrogate in April and I have my cassette paintings on show at Proud Archivist in Hoxton in May.
