Young LifeJames Cleveland Owens was born September12,1913 IN Oakville Alabama he was the son of a Sharecropper(farmer who rents land). He was sickly child who often failed to help his father and brother in the field.
Young lifeJames moved to Cleveland Ohio in 1929 for better work opportunities .There was little improvement . When James went to public school where a teacher called him Jesse instead of James so he stuck with the name forever.
Later LifeA lot of universities quickly got
Jesse But he felt college was only a dream . He felt he could not leave his family or young wife.
DeathForty years after
Jesse won his gold medal he was invited to the white house to accept a medal of freedom from president Gerald Ford.
Sadly on March 31 1980 Jesse died of heart cancer
The following year the Jesse Owens international trophy for amateur athletes was established. In 1979 president Jimmy carter awarded Jesse with a Living legend award.
Why is he famousI say he is
famous because he was in the Big Ten conference track.
I also say because he got an award from the president
Olympics It is important that he went to
the Olympics because he was the first famous African American who did track. Also who won a golden medal
