We’re teaming up with the American Heart Association (AHA) in the shared goal of saving lives and preventing heart disease. Is there a special event happening in your department? Do you know a student who has an interesting hobby, or who has made a significant accomplishment? Are you involved in community outreach? An educational program? A hands-on workshop or training session? Public affairs wants to know about any and all of these events. There are a variety of ways we can publicize events and accomplishments in the school, but we can’t promote them if we don’t know they’re happening. Though not every event is going to catch the attention of the media, we can still promote your event through one of our social media accounts, our monthly community newsletter, or by writing our own feature story for the school’s website. Keep us informed. Drop us an email and tell us what’s happening. We’ll share the good news.

Did you know public affairs offers a variety of items to support your department events? We’ve got your banners, flags, directional signs, easels, beverage tubs, and giant inflatable Jayhawk covered. Visit our website and fill out an event support request form to reserve the goods that will make your event shine. Additionally, you can request an appearance by our very own Baby Jay, who can greet and hang out with your guests, give photo ops, and generally create a fun atmosphere. Who doesn’t want a high five from Baby Jay? All Baby Jay appearances must have a direct connection to KUSM-W.

All of us here in public affairs are available to assist you in a number of ways when it comes to communication, public relations, and marketing. Need something edited or proofread? We can do it. Have a speech to write? We can help. Need a flier designed? Let us assist you. We can also answer questions you may have about branding, including logo use. As you may know, there are specifics when it comes to that area. If you have a project that is using a logo, run it by our office and we’ll help keep you out of trouble. Basically, contact us for any old thing. We’ll do our best to help you out. [email protected]

Prolonged periods of looking at a computer monitor can take its toll on your body and your overall well-being. Eye strain often leads to headaches, eye irritation, and itchiness which can make you feel lousy and unproductive. Maintaining a constant depth of focus is not healthy for your eyes, and there are ways to reduce eye strain. One way is to follow OSHA’s “20/20/20 rule.”

Look away from your monitor every 20 minutes.

Focus on something at least 20 feet away.

Do this for at least 20 seconds.

Another way to reduce eye strain and neck injury is to ensure your computer work station is ergonomically designed for you. Single monitor set-up

Place the monitor directly in front of you.

Ensure the monitor is at arm’s length (18-28 inches).

Position the top useable line of the monitor at a height where the neck is straight.

For those who do not wear glasses or contacts or have single prescription lenses:

Place the monitor at eye height.

For those who wear bi-focals, tri-focals, or progressive lenses:

Place the monitor below eye height. Dual monitor set-up Consider the percentage of use for each monitor, the type of work being performed, and which eye is your dominant eye (contact emergency management if you need help determining which eye is dominant). There are two basic set-ups for dual monitor work station: equal-use and primary. Both monitors used equally (50 percent)

Position both screens as close as possible in front of you so that the inner edges are touching

and are exactly in front of your nose.

Angle the screens so that they are slightly concave, creating a semi-circle around you.

Position both monitors at arm’s length away (18-28 inches).

When working for long periods of time on one monitor, use a swivel chair to physically face

that monitor. Do not twist your neck. Re-position your keyboard and mouse so that they are directly in front of the monitor being used. One monitor is primary (>80%)

Position the primary monitor as if it were a single-monitor work station.

Follow the single-monitor set-up guidance for the primary and place the secondary monitor

on the side of your dominant eye. The intent of the above set-ups is to keep your neck in a neutral position, reduce eye strain, and maintain good visibility while spending time at your computer. For more information on ergonomics and injury prevention contact emergency management at 293-3409 or email [email protected].
