Powder Horn in a Prairie Paradise
What is Powder Horn?
Powder Horn is six full
days of High Adventure
Management training
opportunity on two
weekends, October 10-
12 and 24-26, 2009,
designed to expose the
Venturing or Boy Scout
leader to activities and
resources necessary to
operate a successful
Venturing Crew or
Troop High Adventure
program in several
ways:
Help Venturing Leaders and Scouters to safely con-
duct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging na-
ture.
Provides an introduction to the resources necessary
to successfully lead their Venturers and older Boy
Scouts through a program of high adventure.
This course is based on the Venturing requirements
giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high
adventure activities and is hosted by Quivira, Jay-
hawk Area, Cornhusker and Coronado Area Coun-
cils.
Participant Qualifications
Must be a registered adult member of the Boy
Scouts of America and have the approval of your
Council Scout Executive.
Must have completed Adult Venturing Leader Basic
Training (for Venturing Adults) or Boy Scout Leader
Specific Training (for Boy Scouting adults) prior to
attending Powder Horn course.
Be able to meet physical requirements of BSA Class
III physical in a backcountry environment..
Imagine a day in Powder Horn at Falley
Scout Reservation (FSR). The day dawns on
the native grass prairie preserved for the
enjoyment of
Scouts and Ven-
turers. You may
be lucky enough
to see a big tom
turkey explode
out of the tall
grass
It’s time to get
moving. A quick
shower and you then head for the Mabee
Lodge over a trail that cuts through the his-
tory of the area, from the last ice age to the
frontier trails and the Delaware Indian Res-
ervation. A great breakfast and cheery
cooks greet you to the morning.
What new activity awaits you? Maybe,
shooting sports: archery, pistols, rifles or
black powder. You may use one of the two
climbing towers . Whatever it is, you can
bet that FSR will be prepared to offer you a
Powder Horn adventure on the waterfront,
on the historic Military Trail, on the Lake
Perry mountain bike trail or on Lake Perry
itself.
You may be on the prairie, but as you walk
down the trail at the end of the day, a moun-
tain top experience is realized.
