In the Members Only section of the website we list all of the current members and their complete ancestral line back to one of the above ancestors (where possible). We have some members with incomplete lineages. Everyone should check their listing on the website to ensure that it is complete and correct. Please send any corrections or modifications to me or one of the JFA officers. In order for members to better relate other members who have the same early ancestors I have developed a chart showing which members have the same ancestors for the first four generations. For example:

Charles Paty ca1750-1825

“American Patriot”

The fall of Charleston, SC to the British in 1780, was the worst patriot defeat of the American Revolution. South Carolina was overrun and many of the records from that period did not survive the war. However, the South Carolina Archives does house a collection of stub entries for certificates issued as compensation for mili-tary service or supplies furnished the state. Per-sons providing supplies ‘for the cause’ are there-fore deemed ‘Patriots’. Charles Paty was born ca1750 in Campbell Co. VA and migrated to District 96 in SC where he married Mary Jay, daughter of William Jay and Mary Vestal on 11 March 1773. This marriage took place shortly after the death of the elder Jay and is recorded in the Bush River SC Friends Monthly Meeting records. The family lived near Bush River meeting house during the Revolutionary War, finally migrat-ing to Ohio in the Northwest Territory in 1802. Both Charles Paty and Mary Jay proba-bly died in Indiana. Off and on during his life Charles Paty, a Quaker, can be found disowned from the Church for drinking. In-depth research of the original records reveals his frequent penchant for the consumption of spirituous liquors which re-quired constant counseling by society elders. The indent at left and following page, while hard to decipher, details his contributions from 1781-1783 and does specifically mention a horse. So in spite of his attraction ‘to the tav-ern’, Charles Paty was a supporter of the cause and as a result…”an American Patriot”.

You will see Charles’ surname spelled and corrupted in a variety of ways…Patty, Paty, Patey, Patee, etc. The most common codified spelling is ‘Patty’. Charles Paty could write his name and researchers will find that he consistently used the spelling ‘Paty’ when his original signature is found on docu-ments. I have elected to use that spelling. Of interest, his brothers signed the surname ‘Patty’.

The tour began around 10:00AM with our first stop at the site of the 1804 West Branch Meeting House and Burial Grounds. Vince gave a brief overview of the site and ancestors buried there followed by local history and information given by William Jay and Rachel Ann Minnich. Of note Walter Denny Jay (grandson of William Jay and Mary Vestal) and his wife Mary Macy are buried at this location. Mary Macy is related to the Macy family that started the famous Macy’s Department Store. The group then toured the old meeting house replica on the grounds and visited family gravesites. We also viewed the gravesite of President Herbert Hoover’s grandparents who lived and ran a grist mill in the area.

Our next stop was the Mill Creek Burial Grounds also known as ‘Old Frederick’ Cemetery located near the Miami/Montgomery County line. This site, interestingly, is skirted by a roadway that had to be built around the cemetery. The stones are mostly old field stones, but Quaker burial records show that John Jay, son of William Jay and Mary Vestal, and his wife ‘Betty’ Pugh are buried at this site. After perusing the grounds, attendees joined for a group photo at the Old Frederick Cemetery sign.

By this time, all were in need of a warm break from the unusual cold spell that had hit Ohio that weekend, so we proceeded to West Milton’s Quaker Friends Church for our picnic lunch. Karen and Bruce Jay and William Jay were the perfect hosts providing much needed hot coffee, and rest room facilities. We ended that stop with a tour of the Church’s sanctuary with its wonderful original stained glass windows. This facility built in 1881, caused much controversy among early Quakers throughout the world because of its towering steeple pointed heavenward, something unheard of at Quaker meeting houses of the time.

Friday’s tour ended at the old Union Cemetery located one mile north of Ludlow Falls, OH. This ceme-tery had many Jay, Coppock, and Coate burial sites. Notably, Layton Jay, son of William Jay Jr. was one of the earliest (if not the first) burials here. The cemetery is located in a very picturesque site and many large trees with beautiful fall foliage surrounded the area. Upon return to the hotel, attendees rested, then gathered for dinner at local restaurants or many had pizza at the hotel and spent time visiting with cousins we seldom get to see. On Saturday, October 17th, the group traveled west of Troy to the Brukner Nature Center where our day’s activities were held in the Heidelburg Auditorium. The Nature Center not only offers wonderful meeting facilities, but has hiking paths and an animal preserve with viewing of many birds and animals available for visitors. Registration by Karon and Christy began at 9:30AM and greeting and visiting continued un-til 10:30 AM.

Saturday at the Brukner Nature Center

President Joe Bailey welcomed the group on behalf of the Jay Family Association and gave a brief over-view of the organization’s purpose and activities. Special recognition of attendees Dale and Arlene Jay Robb was given. Arlene wrote a book on her Jay Family line that was published in 1995. Her book was perused by many throughout the weekend. Dale Robb, a Presbyterian Minister, was kind enough to lead us with historically appropriate blessings at mealtimes. Throughout the day, we were also given the op-portunity to win raffle prizes of hand-turned items such as a snowman winter decoration and wooden pens made by JFA member Travis King donated by his wife Opal Ann Jay. One of the pens was turned of wood from a honey locust tree donated by Jemima Reed Shirley and family.

President Joe was followed by a very informative presentation given by Greg Hinshaw entitled “The Tra-ditions and Life of Ohio and Indiana Quakers“. Greg noted he is a Jay descendant also and is distantly related to William Wade Hinshaw. W. W. Hinshaw was responsible for having many of the Quaker re-cords transcribed and published into the "Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy". Everyone agreed his mate-rial was helpful in understanding what our Quaker ancestors’ lifestyles and religious habits were like. We thank Greg, a superintendent of schools in Randolph Co. Indiana, for making the trip to be with us. Lunch followed with the highlight being Rachel Ann Minnich’s homemade chili to accompany our sand-wiches, chips and cookies. After lunch a group picture was taken in the Brukner Nature Center. The afternoon’s presentations began with a brief discussion on the family of John Frederick Jay by Judy Christian. J.F. Jay is not related to the SC Quaker Jays BUT did migrate to southeastern Ohio and spe-cifically West Milton during the same period. Following Judy was an overview and update of the Jay DNA Project being spearheaded by the JFA. Re-quests were made for DNA samples from folks whose lines have not already been proven. A handout showing the Colonial Jay Families, Northern Group and Southern Group, as well as charts showing DNA Individual Marker Data were provided. After the presentation, many attendees noted that though they had not previously been interested in DNA, they felt a new attitude after learning how and why the pro-ject is being conducted. The final presentation of the day given by Vince King was a detailed slide show of the migrations of the Jays from South Carolina through the Cumberland Gap and Kentucky to their “Getting Off Point” in the Warren, Clinton and Miami Counties in Ohio. A chart of William Jay’s children was distributed showing all his children, with those who migrated north circled for ease of identification. The earliest South Caro-lina immigrant into Ohio was the Abijah O’Neall family in 1796. Christy Jay read from Abijah’s biogra-phy giving the group a look at the family’s entry to the area. Many of the Jays that migrated into the area a few years later bought land from Mr. O’Neall. Pat Tiefenbach then read an account of Layton Jay’s migration that appears in the History of Clinton County, Ohio (1883) which gave details of both the family’s trip (about 45 days) and land clearing and set-tlement. An account of Mary Vestal’s trip to Ohio with daughter Rachel Jay and son-in-law George Ar-nold was given by Vince with a note that after his research, Vince believes Mary Vestal may possibly be buried in old Jenkins Cemetery where most of George Arnold‘s family and descendants are buried. A fur-ther detailed account of the Jays in the Monroe, Union and Newton Townships of Miami County was given. This information was of great interest to many of the local Jays represented in the group as it showed the life and movements of their direct ancestral lines. The information was also new to many of the Southern lines in attendance and provided a great ‘bonding perspective’ with our Northern cousins. Throughout the day, between presentations, there was a significant amount of time available for sharing of family trees, pictures, stories and questions. The scanner and copier hummed with activity. Handouts were available: “A Discussion on William Jay of Frederick County Virginia, Tradition vs. Evidence” au-thored by Vince King and Christy Jay and “DNA Confirms that Thomas JOY of Hingham, Massachusetts is not an Immigrant Ancestor to the Jay Family in American” authored by Vince King & Guy Perry III.

A day of camaraderie and making new friends of distant cousins was accomplished. Those in attendance expressed great satisfaction with the agenda and the information provided. The day ended with the swap-ping of addresses and e-mails, the cooperative clean-up of the Heidelburg Auditorium and walks in the Nature Center for some. Out-of-town attendees met one last time in the hotel to visit and share the events of the weekend. Sunday morning was cold and the last of the group bundled into their cars, many to head south to warmer climates. This reunion provided an entirely new perspective on the descendants of William Jay and Mary Vestal and seemed to be immensely enjoyed by all the Jay Family genealogists in attendance. The JFA is investigating the possibilities of placing a marker at Mill Creek Friends Burial Ground for John Jay 1772-1829. John Jay was the son of William Jay and Mary Vestal and can be confirmed buried in this Miami County cemetery by

the Mill Creek burial records.

Judy Christian has identified and located the tombstone for John F. Jay 1777-1849 at Bloomington Cemetery in Clinton County Ohio. She is investigating methods to restore his

broken stone.

GuestbookGuestbookGuestbookGuestbook on the website.

I want to encourage all members to visit the website guestbook frequently to see who is visiting us. It has become to me like a second Jay Message board. Not only do visitors simply sign in, but, they often leave comments and questions about their Jay ancestry. Please feel free to contact these visitors with any information you might have on the topic they are commenting about. Also encourage them to join the JFA and participate in the Association. I have listed below some of the postings from the past.

Some Interesting Guestbook Visits/Comments on the JFA Website Jenny Jay 11/07/2008, 11:14 PM I never thought there were some many people with the last name Jay because I have never met another person with my last name. My grandfather is harold jay and I know his mother's name was mini straight but I really don't know anything about my great grandfather who was a Jay .... I actually don't even know his first name. I have always wondered about that side of the family because we never have had a Jay family reunion. From: Gahanna, Ohio Email: [email protected]

*************************************************************************************** Deborah Jay Morrison 11/11/2008, 4:26 PM I remember discovering the Jay Family Association back in the '80s, and was so excited to see the tracing down to my grandfa-ther, Harry Curtis Jay. I had never known any other Jays, growing up. Wonderful website, I will be sending in my application for membership. From: MI, NC, AZ, CA and now ME Email: [email protected]

Larissa Jay Staley 01/29/2009, 1:52 AM William & Mary (Vestal) Jay were my ggggggg grandparents, if I figure correctly. I grew up in Northern Michigan, which is where my grandfather, Robert E. Jay moved to from Indiana around 1926, maybe. Very interesting (& confusing, at times) sorting out all the Jays! From: Wyoming Email: [email protected]

Jay – and then maybe Peter Jay (c.1781 – 1842)? I am currently in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the University of Alabama From: Springville, Utah Email: [email protected]

****************************************************************************** mattea gonzales 04/06/2009, 3:38 AM my jay ancestry stems from my grandmother Jewell Jay, daughter of Alonzo and Hattie jay from an Indian reservation in Oak-lahoma Apache reservation From: sacramento,ca Email: [email protected]
