Jávea Townhall August meeting

The meeting on Thursday29th August began with JoséChulvi, the Mayor, declaringthe meeting open, eventhough not all Councillors hadarrived. He then made a verysurprising announcement, referring to a letter he hadwritten to every Councillor, expressing his concern thatinformation had been ‘shared’with someone not authorisedto see it.

To Jávea Jeard this is adisturbing relevation. As aprincipal we believe that ALLmatters affecting votersshould be in the ‘publicdomain’ - but we canrecognise that there arematters that should NOT bepublicised, if they may affectcurrent negotiations.

Of course, I could haveasked the Mayor for anexplanation, but that may wellhave caused him to break hisown confidentiality rules - soI didn’t, but it does confirmwhat a PP Councillor saidwhen asked if they wouldhelp us: “The business of theCouncil is secret.”

The Alcalde did explainduring the meeting thatCouncillors need to study‘certain files’ to obtaininformation on which to basethe way they vote on anyparticular issue. Gooddecisions cannot be made inthe absence of informationand the Mayor said hebelieved more informationshould be available to votersvia the website, which will beimproved.

In a very publicreprimand, the Mayorconcluded with “The personwho did it - knows who theyare!”

Point 1 Decisions made bythe Mayor during the previousmonth were all approved.

Point 2 I was surprised tohear Councillors publiclycomplaining about the waythe Port Loreto Fiestas hadbeen organised, as if theydidn’t know - and hadn’tapproved the creation of ahuge ‘no go’ area.

“More thought must gointo earlier announcementsand signs so that peoplecoming to enjoy the fiesta willnot have to park so far awaythat they prefer to go backhome.

“The fiesta must beorganised with lessdisruption, like the San Juanfiesta in June.” (To be fair, thetown fiesta does benefit fromthe Plaza de Constitucion andPlaza de Convento, whichconcentrate events away frompublic roads.

“There is bad feelingamong visitors that the Townand Port fiestas seem to fillthe Summer with unnecessarynoise, fireworks, blunderbussemissions and traffic jams, atthe peak time for localbusinesses, tourists (andresidents) and made to feelunwelcome” was a remark Iheard afterwards.

Eleven ‘staged’ events in8 days is excessive andcreates harm to the localeconomy.

The budget for the Loretofiesta had not been cut fromprevious years, probablybecause the money raised bymembers of the ‘peñas’,rather than looking for aTown Hall ‘handout’.

The Councillor for Fiestassaid he was unaware of theextent of complaints. Point 3, 4 referred to previousTown Hall decisions.Point 5 referred to changes incharges for use of SportCentre facilities in the Portnow that ‘Padel’ facilitieshave been introduced.

Point 6 unanimously approvedthe 2012 Budget, as was theBudget for the second quarterof 2013.

Point 8 referred to land inTarraula that had been ‘taken’by a neighbour and it wasordered to be vacated within 15days.

Point 9 referred to therecognition by the Town Hallof those who had made anexceptional contribution toJávea. Often there is a ‘man’and a ‘woman’ but this year theman was Paco Reus Boyd-Swan (a local teacher whoseparents were British) and theISVH in Balcon Al Mar -which was created as a self-help group for BAM residents -but has expanded itsfundraising activities (not onlyto the Balcon Al MarFirefighters) but to other Jávea

charitable groups.Questions and Answersis the part of the Agendagiving Councillors who havesaid nothing since themeeting began, to‘grandstand’ points of viewthey think might attract mediacoverage. After the meeting I askedAntonio Torres (a friend formany years) about hispolitical affiliation.

He was not a member of‘Compromis’ and neither washe a member of the ‘Mixta’group, but remained amember of ‘BLOC-Centristas’ from whichformer Alcalde, EduardoMonfort, had resigned.

Another meeting over andwe all went out to PlazaIglesia (many to have asmoke) and others to say whatthey hadn’t said in themeeting.

That’s a (brief) report ofthe meeting. Until nextmonth, come in with yourquestions to the Oasis HelpCentre - you can’t do thatwith an ONLINE publication,

Thanks to the offer of help from Kacey, I hope to be ableto give much more detailed information from themonthly meeting of Jávea Councillors.

No, I’ve not had a brain transplant (bringing asudden understanding of Valencian), but with the help ofKacey - who does understand the ‘local lingo’ - I hopeyou’ll get a fresh ‘insight’ into Jávea accountability.

Operating beyond the boundaries of theU.K., on the Continent of Europe meanswe are attempting to receive signals thatreally are the 'spillage' from the signalsdirected at the target area U.K. & N.I. Itfollows therefore that the further awaywe are from the target area, the signalscontinually fall off in strength, bearing inmind that the signals start in life fromthe transponders floating in space at theequivalent of a 100 Watt bulb (hard tobelieve!)

In addition to this, where we are basedon this Easterly side of Spain we findnot only are our received signals veryweak in general terms, but closeexamination proves they vary wildly inactual comparisons of signal strength!

This is the greatest problem facing theinstaller and the only way is to ensurethat you have test equipment availablethat can extract the signal details of anyspecific signal, be it high band or lowband or vertical or horizontal polarity. Inaddition it is a requirement that it is alsopossible that it can 'Analyse' the wholeof the 'Spectrum', which is vital inensuring the best possible results for theclient.

Peter and I have totted-up the cost ofour combined test  equipment and it's

obligatory double copper screened, low-loss coaxial cable we can expectexcellent results on BBC, ITV, Four andFive. To complete installations andensure the accuracy required toguarantee that all channels offermaximum performance our team ofPeter, Geoff, Paco and myself use ourPromax test equipment to ensure thatstandard, high definition and 3D allperform to their best, ensuring qualityviewing together with excellent soundpotential!

The final link in the chain is of coursethe satellite receiver and here we canoffer very sound advice, whether yourrequirements are at the moreeconomical end or if you require H.D.even 3D, we can advise on verycompetitive equipment of excellentquality including the Sky Range or Freeto Air types (no Sky Card required!) andof course those offering record facility!

Signal Evaluation ?First off, the Astra SES combinesresponsibility as per their contractobligations, to ensure suitable signalscover the whole of the U.K. andNorthern Ireland at an agreedpredetermined level of signal. This is avery exacting specification when youconsider the range of frequenciescovered and also taking into accountthat they are transmitted on both verticaland horizontal polarities and to add tothe problem both high and low bandranges of frequencies are covered!

The new Astra 2eSatellite Transponder The launch was successful and you cansee where it is in the sky at n2yo.com

Once in position I understand 430channels will be moved to it - and onlythen will we know!

As usual, I have had many eMails andtelephone calls - the theme is always thesame - I have such and such satellitedish, will I be able to receive all theBBC, ITV, Four and Five etc along withall the Sky Channels, especiallyFootball, Cricket, Golf, Tennis etc andof course Films.

At the moment from Denia, Jávea,Moraira, Calpe and Benidorm, 'genuine'high-gain one metre satellite dishes havebeen installed along with 'Genuine'high-gain L.N.B, and of course the

well over £12,000 - but worth everypenny, as we can offer guaranteed resultsof best quality performance. Much of theTest Equipment used falls well below thestandard required for weak signal, creating client dissatisfaction

Alignment! When test equipment of poorspecification is used (often the installeris not involved in equipment purchase ashis boss makes the decision!) we alwayshave taken the view that quality wins outin the end, and investing in top qualitytest equipment is a very wise investment- not only preventing waste of timelooking to improve pictures where thereis insufficient signal - but payingdividends in client satisfaction.

It is only after locating the correcttransponders and trimming for results onstronger stations, that the real alignmentbegins. First, we use the spectrumanalyser and take note of the weakestsignals and then identify them.  Afterthis we take note of the very weakestsignals and, then concentrate onmaximising these signals using first thesatellite dish settings and then the L.N.B.focal and screw settings.

We then repeat the operation to squeezeas much signal as possible and once thesignals match our template, we take noteand then check out all the stations acrossthe band. Anyone who is experiencingdisappointing results, well below whatwas expected, can always call on us for asecond opinion after we have completedtesting their installation at a very modestcharge.

The Future?Eventually  2E will be in place at 28.2degrees SSE and then we feel that wecan with confidence resolve anyproblems in our area of operation. BothPeter and I have been very busy testingseveral products that will offer increasedperformance to many types of equipmentinstalled at the moment. We both arequalified, having spent our careers inelectronics and of course this is backedup by a range of City & Guilds to degreelevel - which we think beats all those'Fancy Advertisements'!

Those who knew me when Icame to live in Spain in 1985,will know that I never wantedto be a Pastor. Even before wemoved from the UK, on oursearch for somewhere to retire,we attended the church ofPastors Leslie and BrendaLyons, held in the home ofBryce and Christine Winter inJesus Pobre.

Once here, for more than6 years I assisted Pastor Leslie, first as ‘the warm-up-man’ in theservices in Calpe (10.30am),Jávea (12 noon) and Benidorm(6pm) on a Sunday and thechurch in Torrevieja, at HotelFontana, at 5pm on alternateTuesdays.

It was a priviledge towork alongside Pastor Leslie, whom I still believe was one ofthe most adept evangelists I havemet. It was rare for hom to preachand not see the lives changed ofthose who listened. It doesn´tsurprise me, at all, that he hasresponsibility for evangelicalservices among Brits in theFontacalent prison.

It was a Sunday morninglike any other, driving to Calpefrom Jávea for the 10.30 service, coffee at Bar Frau in Benissa andin Jávea for 12 noon, when Iencouraged those in thecongregation to expect somethingNEW from God, after whichPastor Leslie would preach.

It was whilst he wasspeaking, that my eyes weredrawn to words on a page of myBible, that seemed to stand outfrom those that surrounded theverse in 1 Peter 5:2 Feed theflock of God which is amongyou, taking the oversight thereof,not by constraint, but willingly;not for filthy lucre, but of aready mind;

And that was it! I knewthat, instead of my supporting the60 minute visit of Pastor Lyonson a Sunday, God had called meto a 24/7 ministry here in Jávearesulting, 6 months later with theopening of Jávea EvangelicalChurch, which celebrated its 21stAnniversary earlier this year.

During those years I havebeen supported by Ann, my wife, as well as Peter (our son) but to a much greater extent by God, whosaw in me a potential I couldn’timagine for myself. There have

been ‘peaks’ and ‘valleys’(probably in equal number) butthe highlight of every week hasbeen the Sunday morning servicewith Holy Communion, where Icontinue to ‘present Christ - andHim crucified’ as Leslie taughtme.

In those 21 years, hundreds have responded whenhearing that Jesus Christ was sentby God to suffer the punishmentfor our wrongdoing, and acceptedthe offer of God’s forgiveness, that ensured them Life Eternalwith God - and goodness - inheaven, but more than half have

Advice from a self-employed husband

It is important for men to rememberthat, as women grow older, it becomesharder for them to maintain the samequality of housekeeping as when theywere younger. When this becomesapparent, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there'snothing worse than an over sensitivewoman.

My name is Ron. Let me relate how Ihandled this situation with my wife,Annie. When I became self employed afew years ago and the shorter workhours that went with it, to fill in my dayI took up golf. It soon became necessaryfor Annie to get a full-time job, alongwith her part-time job, both for extraincome and for the health benefits thatwe needed.

Shortly after she started working theextra job, I noticed she was beginning toshow her age. I usually get home fromthe golf club about the same time shegets home from work

Although she knows how hungry I am,she almost always says she has to restfor half an hour or so before she startsdinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tellher to take her time and just wake mewhen she gets dinner on the table.

I generally have lunch in 'The Grill' atthe golf club, so eating out is not anoption for us in the evening. I'm readyfor some home-cooked food when Iwalk through that door.

She used to do the dishes as soon as wefinished eating but now it's not unusualfor them to sit on the table for severalhours after dinner.

I do what I can by diplomaticallyreminding her several times eachevening that they won't cleanthemselves. I know she reallyappreciates this, as it does seem tomotivate her to get them done beforeshe goes to bed..

Another symptom of ageing iscomplaining, I think, for example, shewill say that it is difficult for her to findtime to pay the monthly bills during herlunch hour, but chaps, we take them forbetter or worse, so I just smile and offerencouragement. I tell her to stretch itout over two, or even three days. Thatway, she won't have to rush so much. Ialso remind her that missing lunch

completely now and then would help herfigure. I like to think tact is one of mystrong points.

When doing simple jobs, she seems tothink she needs more rest periods. Shehad to take a break when she was onlyhalf-finished mowing the lawn. I triednot to make a scene. I'm a fair man.

I told her to fix herself a nice, big, coldglass of freshly squeezed orange juice, and just relax for a while. And, as longas she is making one for herself, shemight as well make one for me too.

I know that I probably look like a saintin the way I support Annie. I'm notsaying that showing this much patienceand consideration is easy. Many menwould find it difficult if not impossible.Nobody knows better than I do howfrustrating women get as they get older. However, men, even if you just use alittle more tact and less criticism of yourageing wife as a result of reading thisarticle, I will consider that writing it waswell worthwhile. After all, we are put onthis earth to help each other.

Ron died suddenly of a perforatedrectum after publishing this letter.

The police report says he wasfound with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf clubjammed up his rear end, with barely 5inches of grip showing. A sledgehammer was laying nearby. His wifeAnnie, was arrested and charged withmurder. The all-woman jurytook only 9 minutes to find her "NotGuilty," accepting her defence that Ron,somehow without looking, accidentallysat down on his golf club.

Long SermonThe minister gave his Sunday morningservice, as usual, but this particularSunday, it was considerably longer thannormal.

Later, at the door, shaking hands withparishioners as they moved out, oneman said, "Your sermon, Pastor, wassimply wonderful - so invigorating andinspiring and refreshing."

The minister of course, broke out in abig smile, only to hear the man add,"Why I felt like a new man when I wokeup!"

If we don’t we won’t have anybeen holidaymakers, who didn’tincrease the size of ourcongregation in Jávea, but didpopulate Heaven - for eternity.

Keep your comments comingIt’s been encouraging to hearfrom visitors to Jávea HelpCentre (open 6 days a week from10am till 2pm and at 11am onSunday for the Morning Service),how much they value comments Imake in JáveaJeard, based on my28 years of living here, and beinga commerntator and reporter onJavea politics (and politicians)since being one of the founders ofJávea Civic Society in 1989.

It has been a priviledge - thatI hope will continue for manymore years - to have Jávea as myadopted home. Unlike many whowere born in Jávea, I and myfamily CHOSE to come and livehere.

People often refer to what theysee as our ‘competition’ - but Ismile and point out thatJáveaJeard doesn’t have any!!A Pastor’s dutiesSince opening the OASIS HelpCentre - as my church’s responseto 3 local suicides in 10 days - thelives of Ann and I (and Peter)have been ‘ruled’ by being at theHelp Centre from 10am till 2pm,6 days a week. Sunday is themorning service and we have seenan encouraging flow of people ona Sunday, who we first met whenthey came to the Centre -probably to buy greetings cards, book Beniconnect, or keep upwith the TV programmes.

This year I’ve been booked foraround 30 marriage ceremonies, but a few have been cancelled bythe effect of the ‘crisis’ - and I ampleased there is no reduction inthe numbers of people who wantto marry here.

CongratulationsWhen I opened the copy I’d printed ofSeptember’s Jávea Grapevine, I wasdelighted to see Jávea’s Mayor hadawarded a scroll to Jávea’s longestestablished English magazine.

Any casual reader might havethought the current editor had foundedthe magazine, instead of solely beingresponsible for the last 9 copies, all ofwhich you can only read if you have

internet access and a smartphone, tabletor computer. The truth is that JáveaGrapevine was founded and first editedby Ann, my wife, then by Sue and DerekLe Bretton. I eMailed the editor of JáveaGrapevine to ask if we could know whotook the photo, so we could use it, butreceived no reply. So, SORRY, but wecan only let you see an artist’simpression by Mike Cooper. We always appreciate readers whotake time to write, and recentlyreceived this eMail:Dear sir

I'm curious as to why I have to payfor a copy of Javea Jeard in Iceland inJavea when it's free everywhere elsethat's not right or fair, surely?

The eMail was from Lynn Cobb, so Ireplied:Firstly Lynn, you write "why I have topay for a copy of Javea Jeard inIceland?' as if it is obligatory.

Javea Jeard is no different to anyother product offered for sale, the choiceis yours, to buy if you think it looksvalue for money, and to leave it on theshelf if it doesn't.

What does concern me greatlythough, is your statement that it is "freeeverywhere else".

Could you give me a list of the"everywhere else" premises where it isoffered without payment, and anyadditional information regarding datesand quantities, as that is against ourpublishing policy - which you rightlyidentify as "right and fair"?

Not having received a reply fromLynn, and reading on Facebook that hereMail account had been ‘hacked’ I resentmy response 7 days later, but still noreply.

When I printed out my monthly copyof Jávea Grapevine - that once was a‘hold in your hand’ magazine (like this)but now has restricted access to peoplewith computers and internet - I read theeditorial from Gaile Griffin Peers thatreferred to Lynn Cobb as: “... thebrilliant supportive Jávea GrapevineGroup on Facebook that is“adminned” by Lynn Cobb ...”

Lynn is also the author of themonthly Grapevine “I want to SpeakSpanish” article and arranges Spanishlessons for students, meeting in localbars. Lynn is also an adviser to Jávea’sMayor, José Chulvi.

I leave you - the reader - to askyourself why would Lynn make suchaccusations, and who else has she toldwho might even believe it was true?

Meanwhile, I wait for her to send methe list of ‘everywhere else’ so that I caninvestigate. CR

Jávea DeputyMayor and leaderof XabiaDemocratica party,Oscar AntonIzquierdo, published theillustrationalongside, on hisFacebook page onSeptember 20th.

We asked him for a copy so we couldenlarge (and explain) it in the window ofOasis Help Centre in the Port, but he’snot sent it to us.

A source close to XD told us“THERE IS NO PROJECT” - justvarious proposals - some of which havebeen forwarded to the Department ofCoasts for approval - and funding.

No funding will mean no changefrom the existing 2-way motor traffic, with pavement incorporating a cyclelane.

Justification for ChangeCouncillors seem prepared to sacrifice atraffic movement that works well for 9or 10 months in every year. Were it notfor the Chiringuitos (Beach Bars) on theEastern side of the road, between trafficand the sea, there would be no need forchange.

The beach bars generate income forthe Town Hall from entrepreneurs whospeculate how much turnover (profit)they can generate over 15 Summermonths in 5 years (nominally June 15thto September 15th) and submit their‘Tender’ stating the amount they areprepared to offer for a 5-yearconcession, supported by a writtenproject itemising which of the offeredplots they want, and explaining thefacilities they would provide. A TownHall committee then assesses eachproposal, judging whether the variouscriteria have been met, and finallylooking at the amount of money offered. If there are no failures with the writtenProject, the bidder offering most moneyfor a 5-year concession wins the spot.

There can be fierce rivalvy, with ahuge roadside poster on the Gata road, afew years ago, advising tourists Not touse one of the bars because it was run by

a man who was Independent of theothers.

The problemsPedestrians seem to prefer to walk (andjog) along the Eastern (sea) side of theroad, despite there being a wide (andshould-be-safer) pavement on the otherside of the road.

Those cyclists (skete-boarders, rollerskaters and scooter riders) who travelalong the Western side, seem to prefer touse the pavement, rather than the cycletrack. And the Municipal Police drive upand down the Montañar - probablyunable to speak to perpetrators of thechaos, because they are probably notbreaking any laws - just FAILING to useCOMMON SENSE and concernthemselves with the needs of others.

Such facilities as there are remainmisused.

The recurring nightmareFrom time to time politicians raise theprospect of one-way traffic - from theParador to the Port along the Montañar,with traffic in the other direction beingtransferred to Avenida Augusta, and itmight have happened, had not Av.Augusta terminated in the FontanaCanal.

We’ll try and keep you informed ofany developments. CR.

The BlondeHandyman

A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as ahandyman-type and started canvassing awealthy neighbourhood.

She went to the front door of the firsthouse and asked the owner if he had anyjobs for her to do.

"Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?"

The blonde said "How about 100Euros?"

The man agreed and told her that thepaint and ladder and anything else shemight need was in the garage.

The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to herhusband,

"Does she realize that the porch goesall the way around the house?" The manreplied, "She should. She was standingon the porch."

A short time later, the blonde came tothe door to collect her money. "You'refinished already?" he asked.

"Yes," the blonde answered, "and Ihad paint left over, so I gave it twocoats."

Impressed, the man reached in hispocket for the 100€. "And by the way,"the blonde added, "it's not a Porch, it's aFerrari."

Jávea Crematorium, to find a manassembling a drum kit, any I feared theworst. Many modern churches have adrummer in their ‘Worship Team’ andthey always seem to be too loud and tobelieve that the singer and otherinstrumentalists are there to serve as a‘backing group’ for the drums.

Of course, the other side of the cointo to have the ‘sound’ mixed by amusician who believes the sound theinstruments make to be more importantthan the words of the singer.

I welcomed everyone to Susan’sThanksgiving Service - rather soonerthan one would expect for a lady born inJanuary 1956 - and made no secret ofthe fact that the Bible states that there isa ‘new’ life when this one is over, and anumber of the mourners told me howthey were going to remember Susan.

This ‘sharing’ is something Iintroduced to funerals in Jávea and then

it was time for Geoff Britton to ‘share’. He first explained that life starts with asingle heartbeat, gathers pace with thebirthing process, school, work, marriageand at the end - a single, and finalheartbeat.

For the following 7 minutes Geoffmade his drums tell the story of Susan’slife, something he’d only been asked todo 24 hours earlier. When he changedhis drumsticks for ‘brushes’ he hadeveryone clapping on the 2nd and 4thbeats, before reverting back to ‘sticks’for the run-down and then turning tolook at the coffin as he made his last -and for Susan - final, heartbeat.

I don’t do “Doom and Gloom”When a guest at a Ceremony ofMarriage tells me how muchthey have enjoyed it, I oftenreply “My funerals are evenmore fun!”

Everyone refers to the event as a‘Funeral’ - but I turn it into a time ofThanksgiving. We may have beenparted from the PERSON, but no onecan part us from our memories - andusually the good outweigh the not-so-good.

Although I now officiate at 20-30‘weddings’ a year, the number offunerals is usually no more than 12 - butalready in 2013 - I’ve had 17 funerals, which is more than any year I canremember.

The Jávea Crematorium caters foraround 365 deaths each year, so my 17 isrelatively few, and the family need toASK for me, or they will probably riskhaving their day of Thanksgiving filledwith Doom and Gloom.

Susan GilbertI don’t recall talking to Sue when shewas alive (other than passing in thestreet) but her Thanksgiving Service willremain with me for many, many years.

I always ask the surviving spouse, family member or friend about the musicthe deceased liked, and we’ve had RodStuart (Sailing), Frank Sintra (Doing ithis way) and Freddy Mercury andMontserrat Caballé reminding us aboutthe merits of Spain’s 2nd City.

“Geoff Britton is composingsomething special - he’s a drummer!” Iwas told, and as the name meant nothingto me, I was left none the wiser.

A Funeral Plan – is that all you need?Since coming to Spain in 1997, I haveencouraged my clients to establish aFuneral Plan, write a valid Will (perhapsone each is required for both Spain andthe UK) and generally ensure that theirestate is in order. However, it issurprising how little the majority ofpeople think about what will happen inthe event of their demise.

Putting your ‘estate in order’ is not justabout establishing a Funeral Plan with areputable company to ensure that thoseyou leave behind do not have the burdenof funeral arrangements and associatedcosts, and it is not just about making avalid Will to ensure your loved onesreceive what you want them to receive.

It is also about making sure that thoseleft behind fully understand your wishesso that they can act accordingly and, perhaps controversially, are evenrecompensed for their efforts.

For example, let us assume that a persondies (a male in this example) havingestablished a Funeral Plan and a validSpanish Will. Let us suppose, as canoften be the case, that the death wassomewhat sudden and not reallyexpected. In other words, whilst theperson who died was close to, say, 80,he had no real health issues and thedeath was a ‘bit of a shock’ to those heknew.

Although this person had establishedboth the Funeral Plan and a Will, uponinspection of his numerous papers, therewas no ‘real’ guidance as to ‘wishes’when it came to the funeral. Whilst theFuneral Plan does state that he wasChurch of England and wants to becremated, there is no other guidance forthose left behind as to his true wishes. For example, what music does he wantplayed at his funeral? Who should thefamily, assuming he has a family, contact to advise them of this death?Let’s face it, he may have been a

member of a number of clubs andsocieties, and those friends he developedover the years may wish to attend andpay their last respect. Spain is notoriousfor a very quick funeral. What type ofpriest does he want? Where are his‘private’ papers? Does he have a lawyer, financial adviser, a doctor? The list canbe endless.

Following the funeral, in this case, acremation, someone has to collect theashes. Who will take them? What doeshe want done with his ashes? Whenfamily are involved, it is easier to adegree, but the extra burden of having tomake decisions can be an immensestrain on your loved ones.

Equally, if the person in this exampledied with no living relatives, whathappens then? Yes, we know he has aFuneral Plan and we know he has a Will, but that is no comfort to his friends andacquaintances, as they will be the onesleft to sort everything out. They are theones who have to make snap decisionsfrom what should be included at thefuneral, to collecting and disposing ofashes.

The following 3-point check-list issomething you should all do, at the veryleast, to avoid the burden of your demisebeing placed on others:1. Establish a Funeral Plan with areputable funeral provider (this willdepend on whether you can afford suchluxury), but the introduction of paymentfacilities - with no interest if paid in 12months - and repayments spread over aslong as 5 years, has brought funeral

plans within the reach of most people. 2. Ensure that you have a validSpanish Will. In addition, if you haveUK assets, ensure that your UK Will isup-to-date and valid.3. Set-up an ‘as and when’ note-book.This has been simplified by Pre-PagadoPaz, who offer Golden Leaves Plans, andhave produced a small booklet where allthe information needed by your friendsor family can be assembled. Removingthe Headache from the Heartache isavailable, free of charge from the OasisHelp Centre (see page 2).

Unfortunately, many of us delay puttingthings in order, and sadly if an eventhappens, it is our family and friends whosuffer and carry the burden. Byimplementing the ‘as and when’ note-book, you will relieve this burden to alarge degree.

The next day, Sunday, weattended Church in the morning andshared Ivy's predicament with the rest ofthe congregation. We explained that aroom needed to be decorated andcleaned within the next few days readyfor Ivy to move into. Immediately offersof help came from the congregation. Some offered to decorate, some clean, others made curtains and softfurnishings and the strong lads offeredto collect all Ivy's furniture fromAbbeyfield and deliver it to Ivy Lodgeinto Ivy's new room.

Ivy was discharged a few dayslater and we collected her from thehospital. She was in tears because shedidn't know where she was going tolive. We told her not to worry, we had itall in hand, and drove her to Ivy Lodge. Iwill never forget the look ofastonishment and happiness as wehelped Ivy from our car into her ownroom. She saw all her own furnitureneatly arranged in the newly decoratedroom and she burst into tears. Ivy lovedher new room which was much biggerthan the one she had in Abbeyfield, andshe had great delight in watching (fromher wheelchair), the workmencompleting the work ready to open ourdoors to other residents. Ivy was with usuntil she eventually died, in her ownbed, in her own room, with a smile onher face as she slipped away.

The building had originallybeen an isolation hospital so as well asthe main house which had 10 bedroomsupstairs and large lounges and kitchenon the ground floor, there were also twovery large wards attached to the house. From the main house, a long heatedcorridor took us to the first ward, thenanother long corridor to the secondward. We converted the first ward intosingle and double bedrooms for theresidents and the second ward housedthe local Assembly of God Church withan apartment upstairs where Clive and Ilived. It was very handy having theChurch on the premises because itmeant that those residents that wanted togo to Church, had only to walk downthe two corridors and they were there.

AS OLD ASYOU FEEL!When I was the editor of "TheGrapevine" I used to write an articleeach month called "Woman to Woman",although I know many men used to readit also. When I resigned as editor andretired from writing, I thought I wouldnever again be writing articles for amagazine. But Clive has other ideas andhas asked me to write for "Jávea Jeard"so here we go!

If I was to ask someone in theirseventies and eighties how old they feelinside, many would say, they feel theyare only 35 or so. As we grow older ourbodies age but mentally we feel muchyounger.

When we lived in the UK,Clive and I, (with the help of our SonPeter), owned and ran a home for theelderly in Shirebrook, just outsideMansfield. We established the home in adisused house that the Council hadvacated when they built a new purposebuilt home for the elderly nearer thevillage. In the early days we only had afew residents but when we were full, wehad 24 and a staff of 27 to give round-the-clock care. We named the home "IvyLodge", because our first resident was alady called Ivy Glendinning.

Ivy attended the same Churchas we did, and had been living in anAbeyfield sheltered housing complexwhere each resident had their ownlounge/bedroom with kitchen facilitiesand bathroom. Ivy was expected to carefor herself but the main meals werecooked by a resident housekeeper andwere eaten in a communal dining room.Ivy became ill and had to go intohospital. She suffered badly fromarthritis and had difficulty walking. While she was in hospital, she was toldthat she would not be able to return toher home as she now needed more carethan Abbeyfield could provide. Ivy wasdevastated. She knew nothing about thehome we were establishing inShirebrook which needed a lot of workbefore we could open to our firstresident.

from Alzheimer's but although they haddifficulties remembering the present, thestories they had to tell of their past whenthey were much younger were a joy tolisten to. It was obvious from the looksand smiles on their faces as theyremembered the years of their youth thatthey were once again in their 20s or 30s.Some of the stories they had to tell werefascinating and it was obvious that theyenjoyed sharing their experiences withthe other residents.

I encouraged as many aspossible (especially those withAlzheimer's) to attend a special group Iheld on Tuesday and Thursdaymornings. Those who attended weregiven a new exercise book and I askedthem to write their memories downduring the week as they rememberedthem. Those that were able wereencouraged at the next group session toread out their story to the rest of thegroup and what wonderful morningsthey were. Mary, one of our Alzheimer'sresidents had been a headmistress andshe had us in fits of laughter for hours asshe recollected the stories of the childrenin her school. Another had been the wifeof a man in the forces and she told us somany stories of the many countries shehad visited, they were told so vividlythat we could all imagine we were therewith her.

Spain consideringchanging time zonesMarathon working days; lowproductivity; late lunches and dinnerscompared to the rest of Europe; less timefor personal life, rest and recreation;family-work imbalances… theselongstanding aspects of Spanish life areall largely the result of Spain being inthe wrong time zone, which should beGreenwich Mean Time (GMT), the sameas Portugal, the United Kingdom andIreland, but which is in fact an hourlater, thanks to General FranciscoFranco's decision in 1942 to align thecountry's clocks with those of NaziGermany.

The solution, agreed in aparliamentary commission at the end ofSeptember, is for Spain to turn its clocksback 60 minutes and introduce moreregular working hours, starting at 9amand ending at 5pm, as in the rest ofEurope.

Consumers opt for bulk energy buysSpain's electricity is the third-most-expensive in Europe. Last week, theOCU (Spanish Consumers and User'sAssociation) launched an initiative thatwill allow customers to pool theirresources to buy electricity, bringingdown the cost of their bill in the process. The idea, which has a number of

precedents in Europe, is to form a largeconsumer group to buy energy at bulkprices, negotiating the price directlywith producers and distributors. Thetheory is that the more energy is bought, the cheaper it is. Until October 14,anybody, whether or not they are amember of the OCU, can join the groupvia www.quieropagarmenosluz.org.

Heritage House falling downThe "Casa de la Candelaria" wasbought by the Town Hall and used asoffices during the refurbishment of themunicipal offices in the church square, but has been left derelict for 8 years andis now in danger of collapse.

The municipal works brigade hasbeen obliged to install struts on both theground and upper floors to prevent thebuilding from falling down. In the pastthere have been many proposals for itspublic use: art market, businessincubator, hotel. Last year, one of theparticipatory budget proposals was torepair the roof for €100,000, but thisfailed to garner much support.

APASA plans a cat shelterThe San Antonio animal protectionAssociation (APASA) plans to build ashelter for 50 to 60 cats in the facilitiesit has in Les Sorts for dogs. Accordingto APASA's vet, José Luis Genoese, it isdifficult to quantify the cat population inthe municipality because there are manyferal cats which breed without control. One of the problems with the Jávea dogkennel is that there is no surgery wheresterilisations can be carried out, something that could be rectified when

making the cat shelter. The cost of the cat shelter is

estimated to be around 30,000 eurosfinanced through donations etc. MayorChulvi recently opened twelvequarantine cages for dogs entering theAPASA pound, where new dogs wouldbe isolated for a couple of weeks beforetransfer into the ‘pound’ proper.

Page 20 October 2013, Nº 6 Jávea JeardIf I Die First

A husband asked his wife, "If I shoulddie first, would you marry again?"

"I would be heart-broken, ofcourse," was her reply, "but I thinkeventually I would remarry."

"But you wouldn't bring him here toour house, would you?"

"Why not? I've worked and slavedto make this house a home. There is noreason to abandon it."

"But you wouldn't sleep in ourbed?"

"Well, I wouldn't run out and buy anew bed right away."

"Surely, you wouldn't let him usemy golf clubs?"

"Of course not! He's left-handed!"

Nothing WorksI was enjoying the second week of atwo-week vacation the same way I hadenjoyed the first week: by doing as littleas possible.

I ignored my wife's not-so-subtle hintsabout completing certain jobs around thehouse, but I didn't realize how muchthis bothered her until the clothes dryerrefused to work, the iron shorted, andthe sewing machine motor burned out inthe middle of a seam. The final strawcame when she plugged in the vacuumcleaner and nothing happened.

She looked so stricken that I had to offersome consolation.

"That's okay, honey," I said. "You stillhave me."

She looked up at me with tears in hereyes. "Yes," she wailed, "but you don'twork either!"

Guardian AngelA man was walking in the street when heheard a voice. "Stop! Stand still! If youtake one more step, a brick will falldown on your head and kill you."

The man stopped and a big brick fellright in front of him. The man wasastonished.

He went on, and after a while he wasgoing to cross the road. Once again thevoice shouted: "Stop! Stand still! If youtake one more step a car will run overyou and you will die."

The man did as he was instructed, just as a car came careering around thecorner, barely missing him. "Where areyou?" the man asked. "Who are you?"

"I am your guardian angel," thevoice answered.

"Oh yeah?" the man asked. "Andwhere were you when I got married?"

The shock of his life

Very experienced Jávea electrician, entrepreneur and charity fundraiser,Vicente Teruel, was on a routineconnection job on the Montgó - notworking with high voltage ‘ when hefell to his death, having beenelectrocuted. Sometimes we overlookthat even those who do what we wouldregard as a ‘safe’ job can put their livesat risk.

We need your ears and eyes

We have no reporting staff, or even paidemployees, so rely on people contactingus and telling us what they like (ordislike) about Jávea. It’s no goodgrumbling to each other, when youcould be telling us, and we could bedoing something about it.

You can call in to the Oasis HelpCentre in the Port between 10am and2pm (Monday to Saturday), or phone669 386 702.

Clive’s also there on Sundaymornings from 10.30am but wearing adifferent colour shirt.

Some of those exercise books became awork of art, especially with thoseresidents who had an artistic streak. Theheadmistress in particular illustratedeach story with a drawing whichcertainly put me to shame, I was alwayshopeless at art.

The group had been establishedmainly to help those with Alzheimer'sbut soon the other residents wanted theirown exercise book and the opportunityto join in. The staff helped those whohad trouble writing, and it lookedstrange to come into the lounge ordining room to find so many residentssitting round the large table busy writingin their exercise book accompanied withmuch laughter and chatter.

Clive and I loved working inIvy Lodge, living on the premises wehad much more contact with theresidents than if we had lived away. Ifound it so convenient because the staffcooked and served us meals as theyserved the residents. No cooking forme! I have so many memories of ourfour years at Ivy Lodge, but if I kept onwriting it would fill this magazine, sofor now I will stop.

Some of the people that comeinto our Oasis Centre in the Port remindme of those residents of Ivy Lodge.Often they confide how lonely they areto me, and one lady even wonders if lifeis worth living now that she is on herown. We encourage those that want tomake friends, to attend our 11amChurch service on a Sunday morningwhere everyone is welcome andafterwards there is the opportunity tomake new friends as we all have a cupof tea (or coffee) and biscuits.

I tell the lonely ones that life isdefinitely worth living. Life is a giftfrom God and He will decide when thatlife should come to an end. Clive and Ihad a friend who didn't attend anyChurch but who gave us the thought:"When we go to bed WE go to sleep, but it is GOD who decides if - andwhere - we wake up again!"

SUNDAY 20thOCTOBER

Harvest Thanksgiving services were apart of village life, for most of us, but -like many community activities thatcentred around the local churches - fewof us take the trouble to ‘Give Thanks’,and certainly not to God, and often notto each other.

Jávea Evangelical Church, currentlymeeting in the Oasis Centre, at the rearof La Caixa bank in the Port, hold their‘Harvest Thanksgiving’ at 11am onSunday 20th October.

Readers can leave items for theHarvest Display at the Oasis Centre, andafter 20th October, the non-perishableitems will be boxed and distributedamong homeless and needy families atChristmas - as we did for many yearsthrough Don Joaquin the priest at theFishermen’s Church, until he waspromoted to Glory.

If you don’t ask you don’t get

When Oascar Anton distributed amessage updating local citizens on thefire in Granadella on 1st October, andreferred to helicopter pilots lifting hugebuckets of water from people’sswimming pools, I asked if AMJASAwould replace the water FREE ofcharge, and my question brought a quickresponse, attacking me for asking.

Within 48 hours, Oscar had posted areply, saying AMJASA WOULDreplace the water, free of charge, ifaffected clients contacted them. Sadly, ifanyone who was affected has alreadyreplaced the water, by turning on the tap,the meter will already have charged youraccount.

When will it be 15th September?

That’s the question being asked by folkin the Port area of Jávea who were toldthat work on widening pavements, andchanging the parking pattern on Av.Jaime I would start. When approval ofthe project was announced in July, astart date of 15th September was givenwith completion by Christmas.

Some residents have expressed theirbelief that if work is not completed bythe end of 2013, the Town Hall will losethe ‘grant’ - but our understanding is thatALL of the cost is being financed byJávea Town Hall from the 300,000€urothey received from selling land ceded tothem by a building developer. The busstation was scheduled to take 3 monthsand took more than 9.

As a tribute to those who remain - whoremember those who never came home(and some who wish they hadn’tsurvived) - of all ranks, in all of theServices:

"Yea though I fly through the valley ofthe shadow of death I shall fear no evil. For I am at 80,000 Feet and Climbing."

At the entrance to the old SR-71operating base Kadena, Japan

"The Piper Cub is the safest airplane inthe world; it can just barely kill you."

Attributed to Max Stanley (Northrop test pilot)

"You've never been lost until you'vebeen lost at Mach 3."

Paul F. Crickmore (test pilot)

"The only time you have too much fuelis when you're on fire."

"Blue water Navy truism: There aremore planes in the ocean thansubmarines in the sky."

From an old carrier sailor

"If the wings are travelling faster thanthe fuselage, it's probably a helicopter -and therefore, unsafe."

"When one engine fails on a twin-engineairplane you always have enough powerleft to get you to the scene of the crash."

"Without ammunition, the USAF wouldbe just another expensive flying club."

"Never trade luck for skill."

"Weather forecasts are horoscopes withnumbers."

"Airspeed, altitude and brains. Two arealways needed to successfully completethe flight."

"A smooth landing is mostly luck; twoin a row is all luck; three in a row isprevarication."

"Mankind has a perfect record inaviation; we never left one up there."

"When a flight is proceeding incrediblywell, something was forgotten."

"Just remember, if you crash because ofweather, your funeral will be held on arainy day."

Advice given to RAF pilots duringWWII: "When a plane crash seemsinevitable, endeavour to strike thesoftest, cheapest object in the vicinity asslowly and gently as possible."

"A pilot who doesn't have any fearprobably isn't flying his plane to itsmaximum."

Jon McBride, astronaut

"If you're faced with a forced landing, fly the thing as far into the crash sceneas possible."

- Bob Hoover (renownedaerobatic and test pilot)

"Never fly in the same cockpit withsomeone braver than you."

"If something hasn't broken on yourhelicopter, it's about to."

"Basic Flying Rules: Try to stay in themiddle of the air. Do not go near theedges of it. The edges of the air can berecognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellarspace. It is much more difficult to flythere."

"You know that your landing gear is upand locked when it takes full power totaxi to the terminal."

As the test pilot climbs out of theexperimental aircraft, having torn offthe wings and tail in the crash landing, the crash truck arrives, the rescuer seesa bloodied pilot and asks "Whathappened?" The pilot's reply: "I don'tknow, I just got here myself!"

WEAR YOUR POPPYWITH PRIDE

Remembrancetide is a word few willknow, but it refers to the period -starting mid-October and terminatingafter the Sunday Cenotaph Service -when ‘The Royal British Legion’reminds everyone that

POPPIES = PEOPLE. The past 10 years has witnessed a

major change in perception of the“Poppy Appeal”.

It’s no longer - if it ever was - aboutWorld War survivors, but reminds us it isthe survivors (and families) who oftensuffer hardship, and a greater number ofpeople who would have died where theywere injured, now survive and rely onthe support of the Poppy Appeal for therest of their (civilian) lives.

As you see trays of Poppies andcollecting tins (they are NOT on sale -you make your donation) we encourageyou to “Support the Poppy in 2013”.

Although qualified in Person-Centred Counselling I am also trained inCognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)and in motivational techniques to helpencourage healthy habits and alsoaddressing life issues, which may havecontributed to the addiction in the firstplace.

So here I am in Javea, making achange in my life and hoping others canmake a change in theirs too, if that iswhat they want.

I have set up a private counsellingpractise here in Javea both generic anddealing with substance misuse. Iam also pursuing various avenues tohelp support people.

I would like to start some supportgroups, support having successfullyfacilitated various groups in England.

If you feel the time is right for you tomake changes, please call me for moreinformation and an initial chat.

Becky Claire MBACPTel: [email protected]

My past 10 years have been spentworking with people who have had adrug or alcohol problem. Working for acharity called Turning Point inHertfordshire I worked alongside theprobation service where offenders weregiven a treatment court order (offenderswere asked if they would like to take thetreatment option or a custodialsentence). This was both rewarding andchallenging. I also worked withvoluntary, homeless, and clientssuffering from domestic violence.I also counselled families and friendsaffected by their loved ones substancemisuse.

As a qualified Counsellor I rangroups and saw clients on a one to onebasis and also had a private counsellingpractice.

Addiction to drugs and alcohol cancreep up on you over time, creatinghavoc in people’s lives before therealisation that there is a problem.

Whether you need to seek treatmentfor yourself or a loved one, counsellingcan help you to understand theunderlying issues surrounding anaddiction.

My name is Becky and I haverecently moved to Jávea withmy partner so we can fulfil ourdream!

We’ve had a home here for manyyears but took the leap of faith and soldour house in the UK leaving the greyskies and drizzle behind. With childrenwho are all grown up and happy for us Ihave only one regret..leaving mycareer/passion behind.
