Beaconsfield Nature Conservation Reserve (BNCR) one of First Sites Nationally to Benefit under the Coalition’s Green Army Program Beaconsfield Nature Conservation Reserve (BNCR) will be one of the first sites nationally to benefit under the Coalition’s Green Army program. Shadow Minister for Climate Action, Environment and Heritage, the Hon Greg Hunt MP today announced that a Coalition government would establish a trail network within the BNCR suitable for mountain bike riders and walkers. The site is adjacent to the Officer Scout camp and Lysterfield Park which is a well-known mountain bike destination. If elected, a Coalition Government will work with Cardinia Environmental Coalition, local scout management and the wider community on a Green Army project to build an internationally approved staggered loop design mountain bike track system. Jason Wood has been working with the local community on identify the best projects that will improve the environment and provide real benefits to the communities of La Trobe. “This project is a great example of practical environmentalism, it combines the construction of sustainable trails, weed control and the preservation of heritage,” Jason Wood said. “It will also provide an invaluable training opportunity for our local young people who will become part the first intake of the Green Army. “Every participant in the Green Army will receive a training allowance, as well as gain valuable work skills and potential qualification in different areas of environmental remediation. Jason Wood said he would work closely with community and environmental groups to ensure the precise scope of the project respected local environmental considerations. “This is another example of my commitment to the environment in La Trobe,” Jason Wood said. “Since the election was announced I have secured significant investments in the environment across the La Trobe electorate, including weed eradication, bushfire reduction and several Green Army projects.”

At the same time as improving the local environment, the Green Army will foster volunteerism, teamwork, local ownership and community spirit in the young people who participate.
