Why Industrial Design?I had thought about becoming a designer numerous times before. As a carpenter, I was always solving problems. Many times they were unforeseeable, but often they were things overlooked by the designer or architect. I thought it would be easier if I were the designer and could design it right the first time.
The thought of going back to school was daunting until I talked to some industrial designers at REI. They loved their jobs and were excited about school. Industrial design was a perfect fit for my creativity, problem solving, and empathy with clients. Chris Pottinger had gone to MSU and after he described the program I knew this was the place for me. The hands-on aspect was
right up my alley unlike the more graphic based program at the University of Washington. My wife and I moved from Seattle for a fresh start here in Denver.
Design PhilosophyI have noticed a theme in my designs that stems from construction experience as well as working with designers and developers at SmartWool, GoLite, and REI. I tend to use clean lines and simple construction with high quality finish and craftsmanship. Many people have noticed my work and even commented that I have my own style. I have tried to encompass a number of materials and manufacture methods, but always approach them with the same mantra - Clean and Simple with Quality Construction.
Future PlansI am interested in the outdoor industry, but I would like to expand my knowledge base and interests. I would like to be a well rounded designer able to work in a variety of industries.

ProcessA pattern was made from existing shorts with a good fit. After making and altering a mock-up, the pattern was changed and the shorts were made in the correct fabric.
These shorts stay in place during all movements--even stretches in yoga. They are free moving and comfortable.

Bike dimensions and how they attach to typical bike racks were one consideration. The client’s goals for the project and target market were important in determining the final form. How bikes can nest together was also examined to determine how to arrange and secure them in a confined space.

ResearchDesign ConstraintsBike Fit: This design will fit both standard quick-release and 15mm through axles.
Light Weight: Main parts are made from extruded aluminum.
Adjustment: Left to Right and Front to Back.
Fits in the interior cargo space of an SUV.
Form inspiration came from Joseph Eichler homes, a favorite architect of the client.

A sketch model showed that the adjustment didn’t translate well to nesting the bikes together.

This model provided much better adjustment for various bikes, but form is bulky.

The width of 4 bikes can fit in as little as 42 inches, including the handlebars!
Base adjusts from 40 to 60 inches.

Process
Welded steel construction.24 x 24 x 30 finished size.Stool or Table.
To achieve 36 inch work height, 7 inch removable casters were added 29 inch tall island. 2 1/2 x 1/4 inch steel bands were bent on a press brake and the open ends welded. Casters were welded together, then bolted to the base.The drawer is a wood class project that I designed to fit the island and added later.

Locking casters allow for easy mobility around the kitchen.
The knife drawer includes soft close drawer glides to protect the knives.
Steel bands were set in flush to the surface of the butcher block top to form clean lines.

Form DevelopmentQuick line drawings interspersed with clay modeling enabled the development of a 3D form with emotion and energy. As a functional object, the form became a pitcher. Earlier energy was reincorporated with the off-balance feel and thinly pointed spout.

Beginning with a 12” x 12” x 2” foam block, I cut out my design and glued on some thickness with Super 77.

Our group was inspired by the steampunk aesthetic and felt it would compliment the existing vintage vibe of the playhouse.

CamaraderieOur group clicked immediately and we were able to ideate together to identify a unified theme and concept. The final concept encompasses the entire space with accent lighting for the bar, theater entrance, and display illumination. These additions will be tied together with faux cast iron pipes.
The scope was narrowed down to the central chandelier for this project.
This fixture was designed to work with the Phillips “Hue” bulbs that allow the client to interact with the color and brightness via smartphone or tablet.

Wood and metal were included to add a dynamic feel to this fiberglass project. The initial industrial stick figure look was pushed with inspiration from the 1950’s streamlined aesthetic.
The cardboard mock-up was essential in the transition from 2D to 3D. The base was widened considerably to balance the width of the fiberglass shade.

The base is clear-coated, but was also wrapped with fiberglass in the original design.
An array of LEDs is wired to a dimmer switch.
The fiberglass shade extends seamlessly from the fiberglass wrapped wood.

Charging cords get tangled, disorganized, and take up counter space.
A shelf that hangs from any outlet box and is held in place by the outlet cover. When installed on a kitchen outlet, phones and cords sit above the counter freeing up counter space.
