1.3 METHODOLOGY
The methodology adopted in the study comprises of the collection of bothprimary and secondary data. The data are collected by meeting different section
officers, staffs, workers etc.
Primary data
The primary data is collected through personal interview with the
managers and other personnel's in the organization.
Secondary data
The secondary data is mainly collected from the company journals, hand
book of QSR Pvt Ltd. and through survey reports and that publications being
subscribed by UEI Ltd.
1.4 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The limitations of the study are as follows
Time:- Time limit is a major limitation of the study. Since the time is
limited to a period of 30 days. I am not able to acquire sufficient knowledge about
the functioning of the company.
Accuracy of data
The study is mainly based on secondary sources errors are possible
The hesitation on the part of management to disclose several matters,
which are kept as confidential, is also a limitation to the study
The personal interviews may be affected by personal bias.
The personnel resource of the company is limited. So it was a challenge to
collect data without interrupting the normal operation of the company.

CHAPTER - II
INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY
2.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE
Electrical Industry in India came into existence only after the First World
War period. The first electrical industry to be set up in India was the Fan Industry
in Calcutta in 1921. The manufacture of electrical equipments like transformers,
motors, generators and insulators were taken up later. The first Public Sector
Electrical Industry to be set up in Kerala was the Metropolitan Engineering
Company Ltd. Thiruvananthapurarm in 1945. The starting of United Electrical
Industries Ltd. (U.E. I) at Kollam in 1950 closely followed it. In 1960 the
management of the United Electrical Industry Ltd; had taken over by the
Government of Kerala. At present there are five Public Sector electrical
equipment industries in Kerala,

2.2 COMPANY PROFILE
The United Electrical Industries Ltd., Kollam a public limited company,
incorporated in the year 1950, is the first factory in India set-up for the
manufacture of Electricity House Service Meters. It is located about 3Km south of
Kollam on the National High way to Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state
Kerala. The company started its manufacturing activities in technical
collaboration with M/s. Aron Meters Ltd. ; now a subsidiary of M/s. Ferranti Ltd.
Hollinwood.
The company owes its origin to the far sightedness and vision of Sri.
K.P.S. Nair, the then Chief Electrical Engineer of Travancore-Cochin State and
Late Sri. Abraham Pothen, an eminent industrialist.
The company initially started with assembly of single- phase meter with
imported components and sub assemblies. By 1960 the management of the
company was taken by the Kerala Government after the establishment of single
phase meter, it turned to some diversification and decided to enter the field of
various motor control gears and with substantial participation of Kerala Financial
Corporation. When the expansion for the machine shop for the manufacture of
components required for the meters was taken up and production was established
with indigenous materials and components.
They produced plastic film capacitor with the technical collaboration
Rubycon, Japan and Carbon film resistors in technical collaboration with Shine.
E.L, Japan. After a continuous effort of diversification the company had portfolio
products namely meter, motor, motor starters, switch gears, circuit breakers
magneto generators, PF capacitors, CF resistors etc,
The main factory building covers a floor space of nearly 30,000 sq. ft. with
provision for future additions and expansions. In addition a parallel wing of nearly
7,500sq. ft. It accommodates the main Material stores and fabrication shop.

The main factory is divided into three basic departments, like Meter department,
Starter department and Machine shop. The general layout of each department
permit free and continuous flow of materials with particular stress on minimum
material handling. The machine shop comprises of press shop, lathe shop &
drilling and tool room, consisting of Mechanical and Hydraulic presses, capsthan
lathes, Automatic lathes a series of multiple drilling and tapping machines and
special purpose machinery like Gear Mobbing and coil winding machines. The
painting section has provision for mass production both in dipping and spray
painting. The plating section is equipped for Vat and barrel type plating for nickel
copper, zinc, tin and silver.
In 1951 the company started with just 24 employees. Gradually additions
were made & today there are about 500 persons in the rolls of the company. After
1967, improvement in the design of meters was done products are now marketed
under the barn name 'UNILEC'

In every organization production department carries the main function ie,
production. Some companies produce various products and some in a single
product. UEI Ltd is the company which produces Electric Meters and Starters.
Before production of electronic meters the company was manufacturing
mechanical meters . For this they has a full fledged manufacturing unit. Due to
sudden change in customer need for mechanical meter to electric meter, it couldn't
develop or install machines for this purpose. As a result now it imports , various
parts of the meter from different places and assembles it manually. Only some
components such as connectors, seal wires for the meters are now manufactured.
As a part of its diversification programme, UEI planned the production of Water
meters and AB Switches.

Procedures of assembly unit are as follows
Materials are collected as per indent issued by production control.
Assembled PCB is inspected visually for all components and energized for 24
hours on the rack. Terminal block is fixed on the base. Earth sticker is affixed on
the base. The two CT jumps are wired through the CT and then fixed on the
terminal block in the base. Voltage lead from the PCB is connected to terminal
block , The values will be selected by trial and error method by testing one batch
of meters. For traceability purpose *x' marks to be given in PCB Counter leads are
soldered on the PCB and counter is fixed to the bracket. The PCB assembly is
then fixed on the base pillar. The assembled meters are then fixed on the base
pillar. The assembled meters are then tested for HV are tested for LED display in

is affixed on reject meters and returned for trouble shooting.
Calibration
For calibration the meters are energized for 30 minutes on 230V supply.
STARTER PRODUCTION UNIT
The scope of this department is to assemble, test, finish, cover and store of
motor starters of different HP rating.
SMW has the over all in charge of this department.
Procedure
In UEI produces Four types of starters. They are as follows
NSD starters
ATS starters
OSRIPI
FATS
Assembly Procedures of HSD Starters
The collection of materials as per regular indents issued by production
control - CH . The finger contact assembly is done as per chart by reviewing
appropriate components. Board Assembly is carried out by using the appropriate
number of different kinds of carrier assembly and other components in the board.
Assembly as per the chart. The over coils are wound to suit the different HP by
utilizing the chart specifying gauge number of turns and lead length. Main
Assembly is done by fixing N/V release Assembly.

The finished painted frame is selected depending upon Horse Power. The
drain plug is fitted. Transformer of appropriate Horse Power inserted and fitted
into the frame. All leads are terminated to the Terminal Board after trimming and
soldering . The tested and painted unit of appropriate Horse Power is bolted to the
frame.
Operations of the ATS starter is checked. The voltage at each tape is
verified. The tripping of the starter is verified with U/V release only.
Assembly procedures of OSR Starters (I & II)
The magnet assembly and setting is done on the assembled board
irrespective of Horse Power. The Rotor setting is done on the magnet set OSR
board and ensured that the protection of the handle is properly transferred to the
moments of rotor contact over the fixed contacts.. The rotor set board is
assembled into the box overload coils in sets are introduced as per Horse Power.
Connections are done as per the wiring diagram. The operation of the magnets and
connections are also rectified in testing.
Calibration:-
The assembled starter is transferred to the testing for calibration of
overload dashpot, where it is calibrated for 100 and 125% of normal current.
Assembly procedures of FATS
The silent constructional features of this starter is that it is manufactured
on a motor control panel. Manufactured on a motor control panel. Manufactured
out of LOSWG steel sheet and supported on the transformer tanks. The
transformer tank is leak proof with oil drain using air drying enamel paint. The
