    CHAPTER I

    INTRODUCTION

    1.1 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study is intended to attain the first hand experience of the overall

functioning of the organization. It also provides a change to see the practical

constraints faced by the managers while putting the theory in practice.

    1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

    To get an Organizational exposure.

    To understand the organizational structure.

To under stand the functioning of each and every departments.

To understand the actual functioning of the organization.

To understand the basis of the departmentation.

To study about the employee -employer relationship.

To make an evaluation of the performance of the organization.

    To make a SWOT analysis

    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The project entitled AN ORGANIZATION STUDY TO UNITED

ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, KOLLAM helped me to acquire in practical

knowledge regarding the working conditions, Quality policies, policies adopted to

improve the efficiency of the workers etc.

    1.3 METHODOLOGY

The methodology adopted in the study comprises of the collection of bothprimary and secondary data. The data are collected by meeting different section

    officers, staffs, workers etc.

    Primary data

The primary data is collected through personal interview with the

managers and other personnel's in the organization.

    Secondary data

The secondary data is mainly collected from the company journals, hand

book of QSR Pvt Ltd. and through survey reports and that publications being

    subscribed by UEI Ltd.

    1.4 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The limitations of the study are as follows

Time:- Time limit is a major limitation of the study. Since the time is

limited to a period of 30 days. I am not able to acquire sufficient knowledge about

    the functioning of the company.

    Accuracy of data

The study is mainly based on secondary sources errors are possible

The hesitation on the part of management to disclose several matters,

which are kept as confidential, is also a limitation to the study

The personal interviews may be affected by personal bias.

The personnel resource of the company is limited. So it was a challenge to

collect data without interrupting the normal operation of the company.

    CHAPTER - II

    INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY

    2.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE

Electrical Industry in India came into existence only after the First World

War period. The first electrical industry to be set up in India was the Fan Industry

in Calcutta in 1921. The manufacture of electrical equipments like transformers,

motors, generators and insulators were taken up later. The first Public Sector

Electrical Industry to be set up in Kerala was the Metropolitan Engineering

Company Ltd. Thiruvananthapurarm in 1945. The starting of United Electrical

Industries Ltd. (U.E. I) at Kollam in 1950 closely followed it. In 1960 the

management of the United Electrical Industry Ltd; had taken over by the

Government of Kerala. At present there are five Public Sector electrical

    equipment industries in Kerala,

    2.2 COMPANY PROFILE

The United Electrical Industries Ltd., Kollam a public limited company,

incorporated in the year 1950, is the first factory in India set-up for the

manufacture of Electricity House Service Meters. It is located about 3Km south of

Kollam on the National High way to Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state

Kerala. The company started its manufacturing activities in technical

collaboration with M/s. Aron Meters Ltd. ; now a subsidiary of M/s. Ferranti Ltd.

    Hollinwood.

The company owes its origin to the far sightedness and vision of Sri.

K.P.S. Nair, the then Chief Electrical Engineer of Travancore-Cochin State and

Late Sri. Abraham Pothen, an eminent industrialist.

The company initially started with assembly of single- phase meter with

imported components and sub assemblies. By 1960 the management of the

company was taken by the Kerala Government after the establishment of single

phase meter, it turned to some diversification and decided to enter the field of

various motor control gears and with substantial participation of Kerala Financial

Corporation. When the expansion for the machine shop for the manufacture of

components required for the meters was taken up and production was established

    with indigenous materials and components.

They produced plastic film capacitor with the technical collaboration

Rubycon, Japan and Carbon film resistors in technical collaboration with Shine.

E.L, Japan. After a continuous effort of diversification the company had portfolio

products namely meter, motor, motor starters, switch gears, circuit breakers

magneto generators, PF capacitors, CF resistors etc,

The main factory building covers a floor space of nearly 30,000 sq. ft. with

provision for future additions and expansions. In addition a parallel wing of nearly

7,500sq. ft. It accommodates the main Material stores and fabrication shop.

  • 7/29/2019 jas- uei project.doc

    5/85

The main factory is divided into three basic departments, like Meter department,

Starter department and Machine shop. The general layout of each department

permit free and continuous flow of materials with particular stress on minimum

material handling. The machine shop comprises of press shop, lathe shop &

drilling and tool room, consisting of Mechanical and Hydraulic presses, capsthan

lathes, Automatic lathes a series of multiple drilling and tapping machines and

special purpose machinery like Gear Mobbing and coil winding machines. The

painting section has provision for mass production both in dipping and spray

painting. The plating section is equipped for Vat and barrel type plating for nickel

    copper, zinc, tin and silver.

In 1951 the company started with just 24 employees. Gradually additions

were made & today there are about 500 persons in the rolls of the company. After

1967, improvement in the design of meters was done products are now marketed

    under the barn name 'UNILEC'

In every organization production department carries the main function ie,

production. Some companies produce various products and some in a single

product. UEI Ltd is the company which produces Electric Meters and Starters.

Before production of electronic meters the company was manufacturing

mechanical meters . For this they has a full fledged manufacturing unit. Due to

sudden change in customer need for mechanical meter to electric meter, it couldn't

develop or install machines for this purpose. As a result now it imports , various

parts of the meter from different places and assembles it manually. Only some

components such as connectors, seal wires for the meters are now manufactured.

As a part of its diversification programme, UEI planned the production of Water

    meters and AB Switches.
