AIDS Memorial ParkNew York City, NY

Designed for NYC AIDS Memorial Park Design Competition with my brother, Adam Sell, this entry represents our connection to the community and our concepts that pay respect to the lives lost. e park was designed around three central themes: spirit, soul, and community.

e spirit of the park is the newly added vegetation and maple trees that line the perimeter. Moving with the wind and always growing and changing, these trees protect the park and watch over it’s visitors.

e soul of the park is the piano at the center. is stone sculpture is a reminder that music, throughout time, has been a unifying element, keeping the people together.

e community is represented in the stone fountain. Made of black granite, visitors can touch the water as it runs down. Each of it’s layers represents the dierent groups aected by the disease. From the gay community, to the families and friends, to the hospitals, the disease touched millions and this site will be a memorial for those to remember and celebrate the lives.

e stainless steel benches are silhou-ettes of the victims frozen in time. ey line the pathways that are mirrored o of the intersecting streets that surround the park.

Muppet Labs: e RideLake Buena Vista, FL

is project was a participant in Disney’s ImagiNations Design Competition 2011. is project was a collaboration between four college students nation wide for various disciplines.

Muppet Labs: e Ride is an immersive experience into the chaos that is e Muppets.  Our adventure takes place in a new age science lab, currently being run by Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker.  Inside, guests are taken on a tour to show o the project that is going to put the Muppets on the map; “What came rst, the chicken or the egg?”

Guests are captivated from the moment they approach the attraction. With controlled views of the façade and fountain, visitors are drawn into the building and embark on their scientic journey, or so they think. With larger then life bubbling instruments, guests can interact and engage with the com-puter systems that control the machines. Moving along, guests embark on their journey in a specially designed Muppet Labs vehicle, led by Dr. Bunsen Honey-dew, through the facility. With twists and turns, laughs and cries, the whole family can enjoy the Muppets in an all-new experience.

URI Student Restaurant & MarketKingston, RI

In the North West corner of Peckham Farm will be the new farmer’s market hub. is area will house two new buildings: the farmer’s market barn and the restaurant. Woven through both of these buildings is an edible landscape for visitors to interact with.

URI’s newest restaurant will be located opposite the farmer’s market at Peckham Farm. is 7,000 square foot building will utilize the locally grown products of Rhode Island and New England. Guests will have menu choices that feature the produce and dairy harvested from URI’s own farms. is student run facility will provide revenue and jobs, as well as educate diners about the food production process. Surrounding the building is a collection of gardens that further enforce the ideas of locally grown and harvested. e restaurant looks out over the elds of the farm, giving a picturesque backdrop to your dining experience.

e edible landscape is critical in tying the program of these facilities together. From plum trees, to blueberry bushes, the gardens will have a wide variety edible plants and signage to explain how it gets from the ground to your plate. Overall the goal of this facility to promote and educate the community about locally grown products, while bringing people into one of URI’s most valuable resources.

Construction Details

e construction details shown here are from various studio projects. All were created in AutoCAD.

e Irrigation Plan is a design I created for e Walt Disney Company in Orlando, Florida during my internship. is is a parking lot area at their Ticket and Transportation Center, a central transportation hub for their property. I was given the task of sizing the pipes, picking the appropriate heads for the plant material and drawing up the construction documents for the project.

Hand and Computer Graphics

e following are a variety of graphics that I have produced for studios and design competitions. Several dierent mediums were used, including colored pencils, markers, and ink. In addition to the hand rendered graphics are com-puter generated images. Methods used to produce these were Photoshop, Illustrator, and SketchUp.

Both displays pictured here are designs created for the New England Spring Flower Show in Boston, MA. In coop-eration with the New England Brome-liad Society, these displays featured bromeliads and tillandsia from all over the world. Both received several medals and certicates and were recognized by local media stations. e top display is approximately 12’ tall and 16‘ wide. e bottom display is approximately 50’ wide and 14‘ tall.

Opposite Page - All installations were commissioned by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society to solve an audi-ence foot trac and congestion problem at the Flower Show. e display at the top left was in a children’s area of the show made to be at the eye level of the average ve year old. e exhibit at the top right served as a rotary in one of the main halls and featured plants found in six dierent environmental conditions. e exhibit on the bottom right was a staple on the main show oor and promoted the use of biofuels as well as demonstrated examples of plant material used to create the fuels. ese displays won multiple medals, certicates, and show honors.

Related Work

e two productions pictured here are recent shows in which I served as set designer, lighting designer, and sound designer. e production on top was a traveling competitive show. e design challenge presented to myself and my team was to create a set that could be set up and taken apart in under ve min-utes, while maintaining a tight budget. e design goal of the other show, a large musical, was to create an area with variable performance platforms with a tropical environment.
